I made a similar post in another thread and it got me thinking. Are consoles moving towards a more enthusiast level category in gaming? Not to the level of PC of course, but an entry level or mid tier enthusiast category.

The Series X and PS5 are pretty beefy in specs, and both should play games amazingly well. PS5 is even promising 3D audio and no or minimal load times! How enthusiast is that?

I bring this up because of the shift to mobile and tablet gaming. My sister is an elementary school teacher, and she noticed while kids still play games, a lot of them play on tablets or smart phones....not on dedicated consoles. And as an industry we are seeing a push to game streaming services. Gone are the days of Kids playing Genesis and SNES for their gaming needs (and the playground arguments of which is better)

So as my topic name states, do you think consoles are moving to a mid or entry level enthusiast tier in gaming? With PC gaming being the top tier enthusiast level. Keep in mind casual would be streaming, tablet, and mobile phone gaming.

My gaming set up consists of a PS4 Pro (and other consoles) hooked up to a 4K HDR TV with a 5.1 surround sound system. I think that reaches a mid tier enthusiast level for gaming.

After reveals of both console Specs I think both MS and Sony are trying to point out why consoles still matter in a streaming future.

3d Audio, best performance, and no load times sounds awesome for an enthusiast level gamer. Which with the rise of smartphones and tablets.....this kind of puts consoles to the more enthusiast level gamer category.

Does anyone think that Sony and MS will release "Pro" versions 2-3 years in the console cycle?

I don't really think the PS4 Pro and One X exactly flew off shelves.

I feel like the PS5 will be less expensive, so there's a bonus right there.

But didn't Spencer say that they are still going to make games for the original Xbox One for a few years?

I don't think power is going to matter if devs have to make games for the lowest performing consoles still

@kadin_kai:

That's an adequate sample size, in fact that's about as high as you want to go.

Any more than that your survey becomes a waste of money, as you won't get vastly different results. You will notice patterns and data repeating.

I've done professional survey's before

I prefer physical, less time waiting for downloads, and at least I know I have a copy in case something happens to my account or console and I can’t access my digital game library.

Physical all they way. Only exceptions are insanely good sales on the ps store (I'm talking $5 or less) or if the game is digital only.

This is pretty much my stance.

I like to collect, so physical is a must.

I mostly buy indie or smaller games digital.

I would buy more indie games physical, but a lot of them come in limited quantities by Limited Run and F that.

In all honesty, I'm surprised these forums are still up.

I think Halo was of its time good.

Much like the Quakes, Unreal tournaments, and Socoms of the past.

Now we have COD and Fortnite

@WitIsWisdom: I use to do that too, buy games I wanted immediately.

But damn it is a waste of money. I can really only commit to one game at a time, and by the time I do finish one the other games I want are on sale or have gone down in price some.

Like Daemon X Machina, it was $60 and now it's $45. Might jump on it at $30
