nothing lol. I've been Beta testing for almost 10 years though and just get sick of seeing people come here or some other forum and complain about the game. Medal of Honor was a class example of that. They need to complain to the Beta boards and Devs, hence why they are doing Beta, to get feedback.

So Fallout Online decided to show up today. Clicky here http://www.fallout-on-line.com/ to sign up for Beta (and please only do so if you actually want to help and aren't just looking for a free ride)
Well technically you never owned the box copies either. It's just that recently the idea is being enforced more-so. The same has always been true for music and movies. You don't own the product, you own the right to use the product, much like how a movie theater pays alot of money for the right to use and show a product to other people.
I will agree however that some of the DRM lately is horrible, but that's why I just stick to Steam now and they haven't let me down yet. It's not nearly the death of PC gaming though. Console gaming has stronger DRM then PC by far and it's not going anywhere either. If you don't believe me just ask all of the people that still have the first Xbox and can't play their games online anymore because they rely on the servers of the parent company.
At least with the PC I can always take any one of the games I've bought in the last 20 years and still play them online...for free. And if their aren't any servers available I can just make my own.
My friends and I have been having alot of conversations about this topic lately. Mostly about quitting multiplayer minus playing with friends all together. Not that the games are that bad, but the communities have become horrible lately. Maybe I'm getting old but players online are mostly a bunch of morons who are good at gaming and nothing else.
I'm suprised that some games, like Left 4 Dead, World in Conflict, and Modern Warfare have not completely killed off their player base yet.
I think of myself as open minded for the most part and always have been, but when I sign online and 4 out of 12 players all have gamertags related to either getting high or sexual references it gets old....yeah it's funny....in junior high maybe. I'm not a prude by any means but seriously come on, your not funny or cute in any way.
The other issue online I see alot lately is this "elitism" attitude. No one even asks for help or tries to teach anyone anymore. If you do something wrong they just start screaming at you calling you a noob (which I take no offense to being the definition could really be "one who's real life is good" ). And then they'll go on calling you the worst player ever...whatever. I do not have the time nor tolerance for the disrespect in online gaming anymore.
And God forbid you play in anyway other then how they want you to play. We all paid our hard earned money, or stole it, and we all have the right to play the game on and offline however we damn well choose. Tired of seeing good people get kicked because they are using artillery or noob tubes. The game was made with it, so if you have a problem with it, find a different game. Quit trying to change everyone else's game.
Bottom line is that if people online acted the way they do back in the arcade days to those of us who are older or in the military, they probably wouldn't be going to school the next day bragging with all of their teeth intact.
But enough of my ranting lol. I long for a time when gaming gets back to classic experiences, great stories, epic encounters and memorable moments. And I long for the time I can just not be tempted to enjoy an online game anymore and not care.
IMO the experience holds more value then the time you get out of it and for a few reasons.
I'd rather have 10 hours of an amazing game, with good story, graphics, sound, and music score then 100 hours of "I have to do this again?".
Even though the prices on both games are the same, even if you get 10 hours of play for $50 -$60, thats still cheaper in comparison to buying a Blu-Ray disc at $20-$30 for 2-3 hours of content. Unless of course you watch the "extra" features all the way through....and they are actually worth something for a change.
Plus most games have online which will expand the usage, mods keeping the game installed as well.
So in reality the time I spend doesn't matter.
For example, ever since I got out of the military I've been a sucker for good military drama and story, said that I am one of the few people probably who loved Star Wars: Republic Commando and Modern Warfare 2's stories and experience. They were both extremely short games but they sit in my memory of wow and omg moments making them worth every penny I spent.
I also played WoW for a 1 1/2, and have spent $30 for the game, another $40 on both expansions, plus the online montly fee and honestly can't distinguish one hour from the next, minus some of the Lich King story plots. Even though I got years of gameplay I feel I spent my money better on CoD 4 and MW 2 due to the impact they had when I played them.
Really depends on the game.
I use 360 controllers/guitars/drums for platformers and third person shooters, sports and racing games etc. We play most of the "casual" or ported console games on our media center and chill out in the living room. I find it much more relaxing then piling up my kids and wife at my pc "throne" as they call it.
I prefer to be on my pc though for FPS, RTS and RPG games, I like the extra keys and speed of the mouse vs a controller for them.
The only time I really use my k/m for 3rd person games is when I'm online, contoller just won't cut it there but offline the comfortability of the HD TV and couch win. Thats why we built a second gaming rig as a media center rather then buy a console. Most of the parts came from my previous gaming pc and was more cost effective and more customizable.
So in short I guess the answer is BOTH. Some games work well if not better with a controller, and some do not but it's a personal preference and feel. Also depends a little on if you are single living in a dorm or barracks or have a family you game with too I suppose.
Thanks for all the quick feedback....once again Gamespot users come back with quick, mature answers.....wish I could say the same for the MW2 and L4D communities lol....part of the reason I'm looking to get back into single player gaming. It seems that online pc gaming is gathering an "Xbox Live" type crowd and attitude lately. I blame that mostly on matchmaking services that have no admin or clan control, just hope it's not a trend.
The ported look of pc games doesn't bother me as long as they perform and look graphically like a pc game should. I play alot of ports including the Lego Games and the Guitar Hero games, Red Faction etc. and use my 360 controller and Rockband guitar and drums from the 360. I don't hate the games it has...just the system and majority of it's online community.
But anyways I picked up ME already and should be playing it this weekend. I think I might wait on Portal....I have all of the Orange Box already minus Half-Life Episodes 1 and 2 but I haven't finished Half-Life 2 yet so I'll pick them all up at a later date.
Thanks again to everyone who replied.
