The same notion has occured to me in the past, but without the awesome metaphor. That was a good read, although I think when new consoles come out they aren't really much better than high-end gaming PC's.
Look at it this way, when Microsoft and Sony start developing new consoles, they use the most advanced tech available at the time. It will probably take them a while to develop the consoles, and also for devs to develop launch titles. When they finally release the cutting edge PC technology will already have surpassed it.
I remember when the current Generation of consoles released, Oblivion was one of the first games to really have some impressive visuals on the consoles. yet when it released, the PC version still looked better if you had a good enough computer.
So while I agree with what you are saying in general, I don't think PC's get totally destroyed by new console generations.

Perhaps PC's have gotten more of a gap pulled out now that the new consoles will still only just be on par with current leading edge hardware.
It's going to be very interesting and I guess we'll probably find out at next years E3 if the rumors of an unveil of the next Xbox at the show is true.
Would be cool to see a break from this recurring cycle for sure.
