Sigh...I don't WANT to spend a bunch of time BUILDING stuff, I want to fight enemies! Lots of them, of many different types! I don't WANT to have to use a whole bunch of rubbish weapons that break in 10 hits, I just want an unbreakable and good Master Sword, and then stick to it! I don't WANT a focus on partner abilities and fancy technological doodads (which in my opinion don't even belong in Zelda games, since it's always been a medieval-like fantasy setting), I want a bunch of cool, regular equipment, like double hookshots/clawshots, as well as MAGIC! I admit I love the glider, and being able to fly around. And the massive open world approach with so much minor, unimportant stuff to do is draining. I want a more focused kind of exploration and narrative.
Also: "Combat is mostly deemphasized in the Temples, letting you focus squarely on exploration and puzzle-solving for most of their duration".
This is the most disappointing thing I've ever heard. Guess I can forget about the return of awesome Darknut or Stalmaster fights, or ideally, both. Probably won't see the return of all the awesome combat abilities that Twilight Princess had either, will I? Sigh...MAN, I miss the old games. Everyone was gushing about Breath of the Wild, and while I did enjoy it as a whole, spent hundreds of hours on it, and thoroughly completed it, it was still disappointing to me, and personally I found Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess to all be FAR more fun and enjoyable (it was certainly much better than Skyward Sword, though).
I AM glad that there seems to be some semblance of an actual story this time, and that the dungeons are actually proper, unique dungeons again now, but 4 of them is still far too little. I want 8, like Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess both had (Ocarina also had a few additional mini dungeons, like the Ice Cave, and The Well).
I just don't get why they made Mario's face so weird, instead of just making him look the same way he does in all his cutscenes from video games he's in. It doesn't make any sense to me.
Anyway, sounds like I need to watch the Japanese version as well.
@gaeandilth: Agree to disagree. As for examples of games taking 100's of hours for me to do 100% completion runs in (all optional content, 100% on the map etc); Breath of the Wild and Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition are just two examples that both aren't too old yet.
@sebb: I have no idea what you're talking about. This game lets you use an axe that you can throw and recall on top of using it for melee, and you can cleave, slam the axe into the ground, recall it and jump attack, do an area attack where it spins around you, etc. Then there's the blades, and the shield. And the Runic attacks, and Rage combat, and Atreus' arrow attacks. It's plenty inventive and varied. Also, if you neither want to press the same attack button repeatedly, but also don't want to memorize even simple combos, then what DO you want to do in combat? Excluding both means excluding almost any action game ever.
@gaeandilth: It's plenty long enough for me, and it has plenty to do. I hate how too many games take 100s of hours to fully complete, and how everything these days insists on being open world, so GoW 2018's much more concise exploration and time frame was much appreciated.
@sebb: This game has significantly fewer button/combo combinations than games like DMC, and about 10 times less than in, say, fighting games, like Tekken. It's not even remotely difficult to "memorize", what are you talking about? And it's anything but boring.
@moistcarrot: @moistcarrot: Everything about 2018 is way better than the old games, including the combat. I've played every game in the series, and was never overly impressed with the old ones, but was mindblown by how awesome 2018 is. Story, dialogue, world building, exploration, graphics, all of it fantastic, and MILES better than before.
@guttenor: The exploration is as far from mindless as it gets, and the excellent dialogue that actually makes you feel like you're in the game's world; drives forward the narrative; and develops the world building, is one of the game's best features, and some of the best I have ever seen in a game. No idea what you're talking about.
