@Rovelius No I did not. In almost two decades since I played WC 1. I have never once seen Chris Roberts. Before Internet became widespread, I wasn't really in touch with gaming news. When I began to live more or less on the Internet, WC had already faded. I never specifically searched for Roberts' info.
I found the environment in the trailer too... sanitized? Wrong word. I'll just say it: fake. It may just be the limitation of a VR game on flatscreen, but if the game turns out great, I hope it won't be held back by VR (possible?).
After watching the GS stage demo/interview and now a few clarifications from Carolyn. I am beginning to see Destiny as a giant FPS sandbox, not in the open-world sense though that also seems to be true, but rather a collection of different FPS gameplay that the players can and are indeed encouraged to enjoy on a whim. You want 6v6 PvP? Go for it! Curious about a story mission? Dive in! Just in the mood to shoot some baddie NPC while taking in the sights? Your Sparrow (?) is waiting. This way, I am actually more comfortable with the game.
It drove me nuts when I couldn't file Destiny in my mind under anything except "undefined FPS." Is it MMO, not MMO? Co-op campaign based with optional PvP? What? How? Why? I guess none of that is important. There are several different modes and many gorgeous locations. Just enjoy.
The ultimate FPS (my words)? We'll see how it all works out.
This is kind of a tangential question. How many Borderland players, after playing a while and getting some epic gear, say to themselves, "I wish I can go play some competitive multiplayer where I may meet someone skilled enough to kick my ass with a starter gun"? From the other side, how many competitive FPS players, after losing a match to someone with a kick ass gun, get the urge to go into PvE for a few, or maybe a few dozen, hours to find better gear or maybe level up some?
Don't get me wrong, bringing a persistent character between PvE and PvP can be fun. I enjoyed trying that in Guild Wars with skill builds. Often it didn't work because PvE worked very different from PvP. It worked a little better in GW2's world PvP. I simply found this unexpected twist in this video; it sounds new, maybe good, and I am curious.
They're not showing the best parts of the game, maybe? Or this is one of those games that are hard to demonstrate in short sessions? I haven't seen any impressive gameplay, except that one bit where the player character shoots at enemies while dragging a comrade to safety; it's not impressive but more fitting somehow. If this is all about experiencing London and maybe characters, then the devs shouldn't be shy about advertising that front and center. If it's a cinematic experience with interactivity, I want to see that.
I feel like the devs hint at it but then are shy about it so they showed a trailer that was supposed to convey a moody, almost horror setting but not really and then some gameplay where one devs goes on to talk about Thermite but I see environment destruction that doesn't even come close to what I saw in BF: Hardline or R6: Siege. Then end result is I still don't know what is great about this game.
@battlefront1943 What's your reason for your ranking? I listed my criticism for Sony's show a few posts after yours. I also mentioned the main reason why I found MS and Ubi's show superior, but my criticisms of Sony's show simultaneous highlighted what I liked about MS's. Even if you simply liked EA and Sony's better, a concrete reason why would help me understand. For example, maybe it's because EA had more games than Ubi or you liked some specific ones. I only caution that liking "everything" is almost never a useful explanation, for others at least.
Also, bear in mind this is not a debate of who has better games or better system, only a better show. For instance, you can't compare Uncharted to Halo, only what was shown for Uncharted vs. Halo.
@battlefront1943 Having watched all four shows so far, and speaking as an owner of all PS hardware except 4 and Vita and no Xbox of any kind, I rank them as:
MS (their sheer number of games put them over Ubi and EA)
