There's a couple of genres that haven't been touched in years. I'm tired of shooters or rpgs that dominate the current generation. Don't get me wrong that I advidly enjoy the Orange Box, World in Conflict, Halo 3, and Zelda the Phantom Hourglass. It's been far to long since we had an adventure game or a space simulater.
For adventure games if anyone played Syberia, Myst, Grim Fandango, Indigo Prophecies, The Longest Journey and it's sequel, would have mutual agreement. What this generation of gaming is lacking are great adventure games with puzzles and an unsurpassable story; intrigue and mystery, and the like. If you've never played any of the following -- what are you waiting for? I know Mass Effect will deliver and that is one of the most anticipated game I'm look forward to this holiday. If I could burglarize BIoware I would! Though, the game doesnt' represent the genre, it does retain primary elements, should not be considered a true adventure game.
The second genre is space similulators. Can you remember the last time you've engaged in an epic battle in your fighter class ship against a Destroyer class capital ship? There is only one game that comes to mind, Freespace 2. The only game that comes close is Homeworld 1/2. and they're not even space simulators. Space simulations are a prime example of a dead genre that would have the best potention especially in the current generation. If Freespace 2 during the 99s could generate such mind-numbing graphics, could you imagine the possibilities? I'm would to say that I miss piloting a ship and against all odds preventing the Shivan Juggernaut from destroying our Homeworld. Watching a head on collision between the Colossus and a rebel frigate at a safe distance or exploring an uncharted nebula. Why have we been forsaken?!
