"if only because we’re incapable of viewing things from any perspective other than our own."
First of all, not even true, not even on a physical level if we allow for technology.
"We can’t help but compare the worlds we see on screens with the one in which we live."
Also, not true, unless you mean that our very understanding of reality is permeated by our experience on this planet and therefore to understand any fictional world, we have to base it in lessons we learned here. However, that's just inane.
"But some sci-fi, like Okja, asks complex, relevant questions without providing easy answers."
That's pretty much all narratives, unless you're being especially pedantic about what constitutes "relevant questions". You see, most every piece of literature, movies, music, video games aren't about the literal events that occur within them, but answer to a series of deeper ideas called themes. If only because by creating an ideal framework, creation of content becomes easier as each successive piece simply builds on what came before, rather than being invented anew each time.
"That’s about as real as fiction gets."
Sure, that's an inelegant cliché, but sure.
This article assumed you were lobotomized, tries to explain to you how fiction works and gets it wrong. Not to mention it's just an advertisement, to convince you to watch netflix-- which sadly not an uncommon sight here on gamespot these days.
@kaminobenimizu: Occulus was bought out by Facebook. The only reason Occulus could afford the 500 million was because Facebook was their parent company.
@holenjd: Of course it is. All of this is just a perfect storm of cash grabs. He's cash grabbing Bethesda, Bethesda cash grabbed Facebook, and Facebook just sells all of our personal data to the highest bidder. The whole system is a cash grab.
@metsuri: Actually, Egyptians, according to DNA analysis of mummies (difficult to be sure) were "white" until about 1000 years ago. They would have looked, basically, like Greeks. Middle Eastern people also would have looked "Mediterranean" . Remember, the ethnic make up of the middle east of today is the result of waves of migration from Asia. Plus, when did Middle Easterners stop being white?
Furthermore, Idris Alba plays Heimdal and that's fine. This whole racial purity nonsense is gone too far. Remember when the interchanging of culture and ideas used to be a good thing? I do. We used to celebrate that shit as the high point of human civilisation. That "white" people (whoever they are) can be inspired by Chinese classic literature or African religious music or whatever. I know this isn't exactly your point and that I'm partially putting words in your mouth, but if controversy is good then surely ruffling the feathers of a few bigots is good for business.
@catlady: No, she gets called out for being arrogant and unlikable frequently through the series too. The idea is that she is behaving rotten because she's scared that if she isn't a sort of "badass bitch", then she'll get hurt. At least that was my read of the character.
You were right to give up on it on the first episode though. I gave up on it in the opening monologue, but I decided to give it a second chance. Whoops.
The worst part is that the show knows Sophia is a tedious character to watch because they, in place of the audience, end that first monologue by having an old lady slap her for being insufferable.
I watched most of Girlboss. It is, um, not a good show. It has Dean Norris. That's good. But otherwise... yeah... I wouldn't recommend it. Glow is really good and... I don't know... Mike Tyson Mysteries? That's not a Netflix show though... but it is on Netflix. It's not really the same type of show, but still...
In other news, Pokémon Go still exists! However, Ninantic, in a new patch, is trying very hard to resolve this issue by making sure the few remaining players are shamed for not playing exactly how they intended.
@immortaltech6: For someone who derides all-too-serious rants, you seem rather invested in something that has nothing to do with you.
Especially considering you seem to advocate a zero tolerance policy to any mention "upbringings", despite no reasonable person would interpret it as offensive or aggressive.
I can't help you with the fact you willfully take offence at the inoffensive. That's a problem between you and your therapist.
