@dnguyen3 I know, even I like Skyrim, but it's more like I like the "idea" of Skyrim, and I think the execution is poor. The game is not garbage that should be hated, but it doesn't need to be put on a pedestal as the best RPG ever made, either. I have always found Bethesda games' open worlds to be too static. I want an open world that is dynamic and changing. In Skyrm, nothing changes unless you go actively change it. The war plotline, for example, never concludes unless the player fights in every major battle for one side. That, and you never see any battles outside of those major ones that you have to participate in.
I think of this static environment and the shoddy combat system and I puzzle over why it gets such a perfect rating, but I know what you mean. It has a unique appeal and Skyrim does try. I think the environments look really nice, even though they may be a bit mundane and lacking in whimsy.
@89318101 @NightStein Yes? So Metacritic uses biased reviews, like this one. Thus, Metacritic's average of the reviews can be an average of a bunch of biased reviews.
@hiverious @89318101 A 7.5 would just as easily tell someone that a game is not going to be perfect. A 4.5 just tells them that it's painful and unplayable. I prefer Yahtzee's reviews, wherein he doesn't even use arbitrary numbers and just gives his opinion on whether it is good, bad or so-so.
@SoraOfKingdom Wow, the plot is stupid and the cutscenes have bad dialogue. So? So are the plot and cutscenes of Call of Duty and Mass Effect 3. The combat system is much more comprehensive than Mass Effect 3 or Call of Duty or most other overly popular shooters.
@hiverious @89318101 RE6 does have flaws, and it's fair to point them out. The plot is awful. The cover and dodge roll system are pretty iffy and don't work as smoothly and consistently as they could. You can't share ammo with your co-op partner. Even good games have flaws, so giving RE6, a very playable and fun game that is easy to grasp, a 4.5, is just terrible.
@dnguyen3 The combat system was my favorite part of Demon's Souls! It has balance issues but Demon's Souls just controls so well. Dark Souls has the same good controls but lots of other issues. There isn't necessarily a "PvP" mode, you still have to play the game normally to get to it. My favorite part of Demon's Souls was the PvP because you never knew what to expect in the fight. The problem with Souls games is that they are linear and grinding involves just fighting the same enemies in the same places over and over. Things don't have to be so linear and predictable.
As someone who appreciates Dark Souls' combat system, you should get what I mean when I say Skyrim's combat system isn't as good. It's not "smart" like Dark Souls. It's really mindless by comparison, when it could and should be as good as Dark Souls. Skyrim has other positive qualities, but the combat system is a huge part of the game. So when a game like Skyrim gets so popular even though its gameplay is far from ideal, I just have a problem with that.
