You know, enough is enough is enough about this ridiculous "Halo is overrated, etc" argument. I'm so tired of it. Halo is an absolute force in video games. The sales numbers for Halo, Halo 2(, and soon-to-be Halo 3 will) show it, and above all else, the overall impact it has had and continues to have on the video game industry and for video game players ranging from hardcore to casual is clearly clearly evident. Your anti-Halo opinion may sound authoratative because of the strong passionate manner in which you convey it, but you are simply the voice of one person on one meaningless little video game forum. Want proof of Halo's validity as an all-time-great video game franchise? Want proof of its quality? Want proof that it is fun as all hell to play? Look at the pre-orders for Halo 3. Look at the sales numbers for the past two previous games. Look at the incredible impact it has made on video gamers from all spectrums- even people who turn a snobbish nose towards video games in general have a soft-spot for Halo. Better yet, look at the scores it received from every credible game site or magazine if you need blatant proof.
I don't know what perspecive you may individually come from. You may be some young outcast kid who finds some sort of personal salvation in video games, and the people who seem to like Halo so much alienate you because they don't seem to share the same sort of passion or expertise with games in general as you do. You may be a wily old vet in video games that has played every video game under the sun, and feel frustrated that several more deserving video games you feel were of top-notch quality should have receieved the recognition Halo is getting, but instead received little fanfare from the general public. Whatever the reason, your anger and frustration are misplaced. Halo is an amazing game, and although it may have had a lot of money behind it with publicity and marketing, etc., the general public are not a bunch of idiots. Halo genuinely provides and fulfills a general need that the majority of all video gamers desire- fun and diversion. Whether it be through playing with their friends in multiplayer or having an amazingly easy pick-up-and-play gaming experience to kill a few hours. A little more serious into video games? Halo is a great in-depth gaming experience as well. Halo does all these things, seemingly fulfilling a gaming need for a wide variety of people at a top notch quality.
I didn't need any more proof of Halo's incredible impact than what I witnessed last weekend when I visited my cousin in college. He's a freshman this year, and he happens to go to the school in which I am now an alumni. What does their entire dormitory do EVERY NIGHT for hours on end together? Play massive multiplayer battle royale matches over the the dorms internet server. I graduated three years ago. What did we do when I was a freshman in college (nearly 7 years ago)? DID THE EXACT SAME THING WITH MY WHOLE DORM. This isn't some isolated Halo loving dorm in the middle of nowhere either. Many of my friends who went to other schools had very similar experinces to this. To spell it out plainly, one game franchise has dominated the college landscape for the better part of a decade. Halo 2 is almost like what? five years old? If thats not an incredible impact on society and a testament to the potential social impact of video games I don't know what is...
