[QUOTE="JamDev"]

[QUOTE="Geminon"] nope, read again. or is reading too hard?Geminon

I believe this is the post you were referring to:

"So here is a theory that I have heard. Note, this is not insider information. A friend who is a developer, not on consoles or PlayStation mind, thinks that the new devkits probably ship with 8GB GDDR5 but the developer tools probably take up 2-3GB on there, leaving addressable RAM at just 5GB. He said the problem is that the APU bus is 256bit which won't allow for more than 8GB RAM until 8Gbit chips are available.

He thinks that the current SDK probably does have 3.5GB reserved for for the OS functions and development tools, but when the next set of kits ship they will have 12GB of RAM and the full 7GB will be addressable."

Reading sure is hard, but thankfully the poster bolded the part about it not being insider info so even a dummy like me could understand.

Meanwhile the actual insiders have confirmed the original story.

nope, not the thread. sorry you are bad at searching forums for articles that are getting bumped constantly.

THEN LINK TO THE ONE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT YOU TOOL!

You keep saying "Check neogaf forum." How's about a specific link to the thread you're referring to?

[QUOTE="Geminon"]already been debunked on the NEOGAF forums folks....good news for everyone. the scoop is that this is info from current PS4 dev kits, which have bloated OS sizes thanks to developer tools. they also only have the standard 8gb of ram due to them not being finalized dev kits, when dev kits generally provide larger ram sizes to accomidate for the bloated dev tools. TLDR, this rumor is false. confirmed by sony insider. check NEOGAF forums.ronvalencia

Post the link.

Exactly. Who the hell makes a claim like that without providing a link? I went through 2 pages of threads at neogaf tryng to find what he was talking about and then said to hell with it.

Well, it's looking like the only real advantage the PS4 has anymore is those 6 extra compute units and 16 extra ROPs. And well, that is still a pretty hefty advantage.

It also says that two CPU cores are reserved to run OS features, just like in Xbox One. I recall just a few days ago arguing about this with some users here. I didn't know if it would be 2 cores or not but it was obvious they'd have to reserve SOMETHING for it. A lot of guys were acting like a hamster on a wheel was gonna power those background apps, lol.

Xbox One: Dramatically underpowered, Kinect, price

PS4: A bit underpowered (Both systems should be 2.5 tflops imo. Seriously, both companies have left the door wide open for the likes of a Samsung or Apple to come in and launch a TRUE next-gen console), controller, no Halo, trophy system is inferior to Xbox's achievement system

Wii U: Everything

About all the edits: I keep thinking of more things to add. :)

The second processor is NOT FOR RUNNING THE OS! Stop making stuff up again! http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/148974-ps4-hardware-specs-analyzed-a-big-upgrade-but-ultimately-underwhelming

"Sony also briefly mentioned a second, custom-made chip that manages background tasks on the PS4, such as downloading and updating games. This chip can function while the console is turned off. "

tormentos

I am not making stuff off and the OS is part of that background, when you are gaming the OS is a background process.

And sony has not confirm 2 cores for OS so until they do the PS4 doesn't reserve them, onlike the xbox one that do period.

In fact in that article it doesn't say any where that the OS is not run by the secondary CPU,he say is for background task and name some..

And Sony has been getting rewarded a lot for keeping mum on things like this. But c'mon, you know better. I don't know how much CPU resources the OS will use but it's bloody obvious that it will use SOME. Supposing 100% of the CPU will be for games is silly.

Wait a minute... no cores used for the OS? Then what runs the OS... a hamster on a wheel? The processor HAS to be running the OS otherwise you have no running OS!

StormyJoe

There's a secondary processor in ps4 which does all backgrounds tasks(including os). The primary one will be used for games only.

The secondary processor is NOT to run the OS.

"Sony also briefly mentioned a second, custom-made chip that manages background tasks on the PS4, such as downloading and updating games. This chip can function while the console is turned off."

The OS runs of the main CPU.

What I figured. It may not end up being 2 cores like it is on Xbox One but c'mon guys, no way 100% of the CPU is just for games. Just because Sony hasn't clarified yet what the OS uses doesn't mean it doesn't use anything.

I find it difficult to believe that there's a separate processor powerful enough to do all of that. Maybe it won't be a full core or whatever but the CPU in the APU is gonna be doing something with the OS... guaranteed.

Last night, I did a lot of reading and watched several videos about the ARM processor in the PS4. From what I gathered, it will only be used for trivial things like downloads while the console is on. It mainly only comes into play when the PS4 is off. It freeze frames people's game progress while the console is off, so people can start from where they left off without having to reload a saved game...

If that's the case then it sounds to me like it ain't gonna be running the OS which means the primary CPU will have to.
