Exploring the Point System I've seen people complain that find their favorite shows is now harder because of the way the web addresses have been set up. They include numbers and not just words. Sadly this is a nessecity in a system bombarded by duplicates. However it is interesting to examine the system and to note a somewhat pro of the number system. If you want to access a show or person you just need to know its/their number. For example: http://www.tv.com/show/10/summary.html will take you to Buffy the Vampire Slayer just as http://www.tv.com/buffy-the-vampire-slayer/show/10/summary.html will. No I did not pick Buffy because of my icon. It happens to be the first show listed. Shows 1 through 9 take you to blank guides. These are to first few and last few entries so far in the database: http://www.tv.com/show/11/summary.html Babylon 5 http://www.tv.com/show/12/summary.html Angel http://www.tv.com/show/13/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/14/summary.html Taxi http://www.tv.com/show/15/summary.html Clerks http://www.tv.com/show/16/summary.html Bette http://www.tv.com/show/17/summary.html Welcome to New York http://www.tv.com/show/18/summary.html Yes, Dear http://www.tv.com/show/19/summary.html CSI http://www.tv.com/show/20/summary.html The Fugitive http://www.tv.com/show/21/summary.html That's Life http://www.tv.com/show/112/summary.html Seinfeld http://www.tv.com/show/151/summary.html The Courtship of Eddie's Father http://www.tv.com/show/189/summary.html The West Wing (knew by heart) http://www.tv.com/show/5151/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/1999/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/13000/summary.html Nickelodean Robot Wars http://www.tv.com/show/13999/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/14000/summary.html Puppetman http://www.tv.com/show/14250/summary.html Earthfast http://www.tv.com/show/14254/summary.html The Six O' Clock Follies http://www.tv.com/show/14354/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/14500/summary.html It Could Be You http://www.tv.com/show/14750/summary.html Wild Rescues http://www.tv.com/show/14850/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/14999/summary.html Vandread http://www.tv.com/show/15000/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/15001/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/15999/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/16000/summary.html Detective School http://www.tv.com/show/17000/summary.html Match of the Day http://www.tv.com/show/19999/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/20000/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/25000/summary.html ET on MTV http://www.tv.com/show/28829/summary.html Weeds http://www.tv.com/show/29999/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/30000/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/30354/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/31987/summary.html The War at Home http://www.tv.com/show/33700/summary.html How I Met Your Mother http://www.tv.com/show/33728/summary.html Kitchen Confidential http://www.tv.com/show/35000/summary.html Sink or Swim http://www.tv.com/show/37999/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/39999/summary.html (blank) http://www.tv.com/show/40000/summary.html (blank) It seems that new shows automatically have 5 ratings. 2 poor, 2 mediocre, and 1 bad. This gives a overall review of 4.7 and automatically ensures that it will never be on the Top 10 the day it was published. It also seems that some shows may have been deleted which is indicated by random blank slots. Or maybe they're just superstitious about the number 13. Another possiblilty is that the staff like to give certain shows certain show ids just because they feel like it or like them. The number system works but it does happen to be a nightmare for easy access to actors. Most accessed actors often have some where between 5 and 6 numbers for their person id. This makes them hard to find and hard to remember. Also looking at the first entries allows you to see into the basis of the system design. Cancelled shows that would probably not be getting as much attention as say Lost or CSI were brought over first (although I can truly imagine tons of Buffyverse fanatics loading over mod queues. I still have submissions pending from July 9th). Surfing though profiles is easy though. Instead of using tons of code they've made it very simple. All you have to do is change the username. http://www.tv.com/users/Yakira/profile.php http://www.tv.com/users/snide/profile.php On the other hand if spell a users name wrong it can take it 10 times as long to load the page only to take you to a blank profile. Even better is the code for checking your contributions. http://www.tv.com/usersubmission/submission_profile.html&queue_page=1 It the same for everybody. The system isn't perfect but it does have some upsides. I'm thinking about listing all submissions and color coding one that are pending approval and then later, once the staff gets around to it, one that have been fixed. Also maybe prefacing the first entry with a list of rules and maybe moving it to a new thread before I exceed the character count so that I can take up the first page of posts. Maybe I'll link the entry to the research on the following pages. Ambitious. Who knows though? I doubt all of this will get done. Don't anybody count on it. At least not too soon. I wonder how snide is doing on that FAQ. Thinking about starting a thread for a List of MIA Editors. Make the cutoff no editor activity for a month. List editor and shows. People must include links with submissions. Of course I almost think it would be a better idea if I got someone else to do it. Comments? Suggestions? Ideas? Warnings? In the meantime here are some threads on the subject. here and here make note that my thread is on the TV Tome Questions board and while you can access it it will quickly disappear and bumping won't make anybody but the staff see it. There are some episodes from the 4th, 5th, and 6th season of The West Wing with completely blank Quotes & Trivia pages. I hope nobody thinks I'm a bad editor for it. It was like that when I got the guide. But sometimes it's just like what do I work on first? Need to do recaps for the rest of The West Wing. Thanks to users like me, RoxieVelma, and GeorgeFergus that guide is gonna kick ass. Still looking for somebody to work on the cast for the 6th season. Details in the Forum. Working on learning my way around Weeds. The show is brand new and so is the fan base. Finding info for it is not gonna be easy. I try to stay on top of it all with spoilers and casting and news that TV.com doesn't add. I want that guide to excel in excellance like the The West Wing will when I've accomplished all my goals. Finding little known trivia is gonna be a pain in the butt I'm guessing until the second season. If anybody knows of some already constructed fansites or forums much like the TWoP boards or the J/D talk group fill me in.
