Stephen Elop is a horrible choice. Beyond the fact that he wanted to kill off the Xbox brand, he's proven to be terrible at Nokia and supported Microsoft's Windows Phone OS on pure hubris alone.
Though speaking about the Xbox division and Microsoft themselves, I don't see what's in it for them in keeping that brand. It hasn't made them any money as far as I know, at least not enough to be worth the investment they've put into it.
I have to agree with @Bigboi500 as well in that as a competitor, they've brought in a lot of bullshit practices that I don't care for. Most DLC is done poorly, pay to play online, expensive proprietary crap, so on and so forth. I honestly think a companies like Apple, Amazon, Google, etc would handle that brand far better than Microsoft is.
I also have to say that on the grand scheme of things, despite the PS4 being a success early on, this console generation seems like it's going to be very slow for all three manufacturers. I also feel like Sony's early success with the PS4 was artificially made because of how bad Microsoft screwed up their PR at E3 and going forward. If you look at the launch line ups of both, they were extremely lackluster.
