[QUOTE="PAL360"]

2gb RAM doesnt sound that impressive. I think they will have more.

I would love 1080p and 60fps standard for every game.

coltsfan4ever

2 gb of ram is alot better then the current 512 mb. I just really want to see the next consoles have more ram and play games at 1080p. No more "sub hd".

What would be the point of upgrading to a 2GB of RAM console? The graphics would be better but why not just stick with PS3 and 360 until a more future proof console is released?

what kind of power do you think the next gen consoles will have? I am guesing an 6-8 core ibm power pc cpu 2 gbs of main memory and 1 gb video memory. i think sony will push 3d pretty hard.

I have no clue what nintendo plans.

I hope most games will be in 1080p. 720p really does not look that great.

CPU - Minimum 6 cores AMD

GPU - Minimum comparable to Radeon 5850 or GeForce GTX 460

RAM - 4 - 6 GBs

Hard Drive - 1 TB for Elite

Disk Drive - Blu-ray

this sounds like a gigantic "ha ha! i know more about this than you dooo"

but i'll play. I've built my own pc, but only have a fairly basic understanding of hardware.

but really, it doesn't matter. hardware knowledge doesn't affect gamers at all, except for those who build PCs

I disagree with you. In this industry, hardware is changed roughly every 5 years and each time new hardware comes along, it usually causes drastic changes to gameplay and even creates new genres.

We as gamers are BOMBARDED CONSTANTLY about hardware specs and it seems appropriate that us hardcore gamers should at least have a clue of what is going on.

I have been a gamer since the Atari 2600 and I was always interested in hardware specs. I remember going to the arcade to see what graphics could be like in the future for consoles. I remember playing Dragon's Lair and wondering how amazing it would be when games looked that good.

I was very interested in graphics because it was always very exciting for me to wonder what my favorite games would be like running on next gen hardware. And it made sense to choose the most powerful one because then it could do a better job of running my favorite games. But I love gaming so much I always bought every console anyway even if underpowered.

Ironically today when games have reached and surpassed that Dragon's Lair pinnacle I fantasized about back then, I most of the time prefer to play old school sprite based games.

One of your poll responses contains a censor-bypassed word ("s-word"). Remove it as it is against the rules here.thom_maytees

I can't remove it.

Would one of the mods remove sh%t and replace it with jack please?

Sometimes it shocks me how little so many of you hardcore gamers know about actual hardware. This is pretty shocking to me because you guys know a great deal about games but for some reason, a vast majority of you guys don't seem to have the vaguest clue when it comes to hardware.

I remember having long winded arguments with some people here back in 2005 about really silly things. Some were actually arguing that some PS3 games would run at 120 fps and at 1080p.

I tried to explain to them that even PS2 can run games at 120 fps but it would drastically limit the graphics complexity PLUS no TV out there can even take advantage of the framerate so it would be idiotic for any developer to do this.

The smart thing is to lock it at 60 which is where 99.9% of TVs max refresh at. But then it also makes sense for them to develop some games at 30 fps in order to INCREASE GAME GRAPHICAL DETAIL. But no, they were arguing like mad, even calling me names because they said this was the next gen and every game would be at least 60 fps and some 120 fps. Oh yes, also ALL GAMES would run at 1080p.

I explained to them that the 1080p again didn't make sense because you were sacrificing detail in order to achieve something that is just PR bs. A game running at 720p would look MUCH BETTER than the same game with crippled detail at 1080p.

The point is so many here knew nothing about hardware then and the same is true today. That's why for years here some of you argued that the PS3's disk drive helps it have great graphics, LMAO! The disk drive? LOL!

I've come to the conclusion that it's an age thing. I'm guessing there are a lot of posters here that are under 15 and as a result, they have no clue about graphics.

If you're that young, you don't remember back in 96 when a company by the name of 3dfx released a PCI 3D card that would help PCs have great graphics. Up until then all PCs had only a 2D card and all of the graphics were run on the CPU.

You guys never saw the difference between Quake and Glide Quake. You don't know the rich history of graphics development so you think it's just something magical that happens in the consoles to make the graphics output.

This is why it makes sense to you guys that game consoles can have hidden power. It makes sense to you that PS3 games can look better than current PC games.

You guys have no clue as to how far ahead PCs currently are over consoles. This is why hermits get so angry, because it's a FACT PC games are much better looking. No one allows opinions such as a Wii game has better graphics than a PS3 game yet it's ok for many fanboys to proclaim PS3 games as the graphics king.

Anyway, I would like to know how many here will confess to not know anything about hardware. I want to see where the majority lies. Do more people in this forum know a lot about hardware or are most people ignorant on hardware? Let's find out.

Please vote and don't forget to be honest!

Get the new 360 slim. If you're not going to be donwloading many movies and tv shows then get the 4GB version for $199 and buy a 16 GB flash drive when you need more space.

Do this and never look back.

it would be pretty pointless for them to release a WiiHD to compete against the 360/PS3 when a year or 2 later they'll release the PS4/720 and they'll be in the same situation as far as multiplats go. Silenthps

Microsoft and especially Sony will not release a new console before 2013. More likely would be 2014 or 2015 and by that time the Wii HD would have been on the market for 3 or 4 years. The Wii HD 2 could then be launched in 2016, a FULL 5 YEARS after the Wii HD launch, to compete against the 720 and PS4. And it would be more powerful than both since it is launching later.

I think that is a much better scenario than the Wii trying to stretch out a 10 year lifespan.

wii HD meaning an upgraded model? or as in their next gen system? i really hate when people make up names like wii HD or xbox 720.

I highly doubt they will release an upgraded model, and i'm betting their next gen system will come out late 2012

The Wii HD could release in 2011 and last easily until 2016. The Xbox 720 and PS4 are not due until 2014 - 2015 so this means the Wii HD will actually be competing with the Xbox 360 w/ Kinect and PS3 w/ Move.

The cool thing about the Wii HD is that it would EASILY and I mean EASILY be the most powerful console on the market. All of the multiplats will look a lot better on it.

Nintendo can put 1GB of RAM for a hardware cost of $10. They can put a GPU that TROUNCES the 360 and PS3 GPUs COMBINED for $100. And for less than $100 they can add a Quad core out of order CPU that OBLITERATES, I MEAN ANNIHILATES the crap that is in the 360 and the overhyped Cell.

On top of that, it will be EASIER than the 360 to program for. And they can UPGRADE the Wii mote while they're at it. They have 1 year to come up with a reasonable upgrade.

Nintendo is crazy not to take advantage of this opportunity.

I don't like Sony at all, I have a Wii and a 360 and I can safely say "you're dreaming" if you think it is even conceivable for a "Wii HD" to be more powerful than the Playstation 3 without upgrading to Cell/Blu-Ray, they would have to change everything about the Wii to even compete and that would cost more than $300. They'd bleed money.

What are you basing this uninformed assumption on?

The Cell is good at parallel processing. But at general purpose processing it is TERRIBLE compared to today's processors. It uses the same general purpose processor as the Xbox 360 but it only has one core vs 360's 3 cores. Then it has it's SPUs which are only for dedicated parallel tasks.

Today you can buy RETAIL an Athlon II X4 640 for $100. That processor MURDERS, you got that, MURDERS the processors in the 360 and Cell. Not only is it a much better design with faster stage pipeline and much better branch predictor and more cache, but it is also an OUT OF ORDER processor which TROUNCES the In order crap that is in Cell and 360 processors. And it's a QUAD core processor. It's not even close man.

Any developer would fall down laughing if you asked them to compare the cell or 360 CPU to the Athlon II X4 640. And Nintendo would not pay retail, they could get it for much less.

As far as GPU is concerned, you can get a Radeon 5770 1 GB for $150 RETAIL. That is a DirectX 11 card and it ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY SMASHES the GPU in the 360. And the PS3 has an out of date GPU with dedicated pixel and vertex pipelines which is ABSOLUTE TRASH compared to today's cards.

Nintendo would spend less than $200 on hardware for those main parts and that is if they go with off the shelf PC parts. They could of course custum design a processor and it would then be cheaper and MORE POWERFUL than the one I suggest here.

Nintendo could EASILY release a Wii HD with similar specs to the ones I outline here at $300. And it would SMASH the other consoles in graphics.

The 360 was released 5 years ago for $400. The specs were good for the time but 5 years later, a $300 console KILLS it. And the PS3 was release 4 years ago but the components are really 5 years old except for Blu-ray. Remember, the PS3 was going to launch 3 months after the 360 but BLu-ray delayed the launch.

It ended up launching a year later but the hardware stayed the same but it had Blu-ray. I hope you don't think the disk drive the PS3 uses gives it any advantage at all in graphics. It does however give it an advantage in that you can watch Blu-ray movies on it. And that's why Sony spent the money so they can dominate the next gen DVD market.
