My favourite game of all time is one that is sure to stir a great deal of controversy. Before I say why this certain game is my fave of all time, let me start by detailing how it came to be with me.
The story starts in late 1998. I was asked by my mother what I wanted for Christmas of that year, a Nintendo 64 or a Playstation. I had received a Game Boy Pocket earlier that year as a present, and I had seen the word "Nintendo" on it, so linking my countless hours of enjoyment with Tetris and Super Mario Land to Nintendo, I went with the N64, and although I never once regretted that decision, when I started to have more money in 2005, I started to yearn for other consoles and games.
In early 2005, I bought Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean for the Gamecube, and while this wasn't my first exposure to the great JRPG, it was the game which got me interested in JRPGs seriously.
In the summer of 2005, I finally purchased a PS2, which finally offered me all those PS1 games I had been yearning for. The most famous in my eyes were the Final Fantasy games, and thanks to my recent introduction to RPGs, I quickly purchased Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII. Unlike 99% of the population, Final Fantasy VII didn't become my favourite game of all time. Final Fantasy VIII did.
Don't get me wrong, Final Fantasy VII is a great game, just highly overrated. It is NOT the best RPG ever, I find the characters highly annoying, the fact that I have to use the Playstation's terrible D-pad is uncomfortable, the most annoying "spoiler" of all time and the fact that it has been milked to the point of insanity just repels me from the game.
Final Fantasy VIII is my favourite game of all time for numerous reasons.
Firstly, the soundtrack has resonated with me from the glorious opening, to the sweet piano tunes have left their mark on me.
Secondly, I really like the characters. Sure Squall is way too emo for his own good, but the girls of Final Fantasy VIII are really great characters.
While most people don't like the battle system, I do. Junctioning, drawing and all the other FFVIII battle quirks come together to form a much more complex, but ultimately more satisfying battle system, at least in my opinion than FFVII.
So there you have it, my favourite game of all time is Final Fantasy VIII.
