"Our new game has surpassed even the cinematic experience! It runs at 12 frames per second!"
The Order: 1886 gets a lot of hate but probably mostly from people who never played it, just jumping on the bandwagon. I watched a playthrough because there's still nothing that makes me want to buy a PS4 (Uncharted 4 makes me want to borrow one for a weekend). I think the art style, setting & graphical fidelity drew a lot of people in & then disappointed them when it turned out to be a fairly stock standard third person shooter (albeit with some cool looking guns) & an on-the-rails story that could be over in one sitting with no compelling reasons to replay the game.
1886 was clearly beyond the scope of what the studio was capable of & that's why it was so short, lacking in gameplay elements (imagine some Sherlock-style investigation thrown in) & still failed to launch in the initial launch window of the PS4 itself. I don't say this derisively - they took on an incredibly ambitious project, running on yet to be confirmed hardware & were under huge pressure to make a "system seller". They did well to get this game out in a mostly polished state, even if it did fail to meet the soaring expectations of avid gamers buying into the hype that Sony created.
That said, it might be good for Ready At Dawn to work on a less ambitious title like De-Formers so they can get the experience. Not to mention it would be nice for them to get rid of the bitter taste in their mouths from the poorly (mixed at best) received 1886. They may still have a sequel in them but I think they need some more experience & probably some more manpower before they tackle The Order again. There is nothing here that interests me much but if that's what they need to do to make better games in the future, then I won't knock them for it.
@azillionreasons: What's the footprint of that treadmill though? Cost aside, you're still going to have to dedicate a room or push the coffee table aside.
We could see the rise of arcades again rather than every home having a dedicated space for immersive VR gaming.
Due to the cost of AAA games, publishers still have to aim at the "average consumer" if they want to see profit on their games. I think in the short term, we're more likely to see a lot of indie titles pop up for VR while bigger studios wait for the install base to grow.
Looks like a few handy changes that modders haven't been able to fix.
I've been playing through new game plus on Death March the last week or so, remembering why I love this game so much. I probably should have started my replay earlier though, it might take a while to actually get to the expansion content.
@EliOli: Sometimes I wish some grey hat hackers would find the dumb kids that think it's OK to make a death threat on the internet & send a guy in a black suit & sunglasses to their house just to scare the stupidity out of them.
Defending your country from the oppression of foreign forces. Avenging the death of a loved one. Somebody insulted your mother. A game you were looking forward to got delayed because it wasn't ready yet.
