@olddadgamer: I thought the first season of Altered Carbon handled nudity & violence well. In a world where bodies are disposable commodities, it makes sense that people would dehumanise others & even risk harm to their own bodies more willingly. The violence & nudity actually tied into key themes of the show & it would have been a detriment if they cut away from violent actions, or gave naked people the Austin Powers treatment.
I'm hoping Cyberpunk 2077 does the same kind of thing for the most part. Although, let's not forget The Witcher's history here either.
@Martin_Pagan: AC was always more "authentic" than "accurate". In recent years, they've really moved away from historical tourism to more mythical worlds.
In one of the early AC: Odyssey missions, you come up against an antagonist known as The Cyclops who turns out to be just a guy with an eye patch. They play this off as a joke, but play long enough & you'll totally come up against actual cyclopses.
I have no problem with the option to play a woman. I played as Kassandra in Odyssey. (I'll totally be playing a man in Valhalla though, I'm looking forward to some epic beard customisation.) However, I think the devs should be honest that they're doing this for fun, not to try to simulate some exact depiction of an ancient society. I love shows like Vikings & The Last Kingdom which both have some pretty badass female warriors. Vikings also depicts the occasional character from China or North Africa, I wouldn't be surprised if Valhalla tries to wedge in some of these characters too. They do really need to admit what they're doing though, just because it's plausible, it doesn't mean it's likely.
I think numbered scores are pretty arbitrary. GS only keep them so that commenters can keep coming back to argue, giving the site more hits. However, calling the game 'Essential', saying it achieves everything it sets out to do is pretty high praise.
I played the original FF7 on PC & I look forward to playing the remake on PC too. I'm actually borrowing a friend's PS4 right now, but I don't like playing on it. 30fps is OK for TV, not for gaming. Hopefully they'll fix up a few textures for the PC release too.
@beantownsean: Could Game of Thrones Season 1 be a 10? (Not, "is it a 10?", but could it be?)
A season of a show obviously isn't a complete story. Many have a cliff hanger at the end. Many change details that were on the source material if they were adapted from a book or graphic novel etc.
Would Star Wars: A New Hope never qualify for a 10 (again, not saying it is - just asking if you think it has the capacity) because it was only the first part of a trilogy, and later an even longer story?
If FF7 Remake is still a 40 hour game with its own story arc, why does it not qualify? Only because you know the full story from the source material?
People who use the word "toxic" every day are probably the toxic people in their lives they're trying to get rid of and anyone uses "problematic" this many times in an article is likely creating more problems than they're solving.
I haven't played BL3 yet, but I know the writing of 1&2. This reads like SWJ nonsense, looking to be offended on behalf of others because it makes them feel good about themselves. The argument is "Lovecraft was racist, therefore this is homophobic". The author isn't even getting their moral superiority straight. Bad guys are allowed to day bad things. Players are allowed to have agency. Games journalists are allowed to have dumb opinions and readers are allowed to slay them in the comments.
@Shebuka: All true, but having TVs that support it will be great. The higher bandwidth standard should allow for better framerates than we're currently seeing anyway.
To be honest, I have no interest in an Xbox. I already have a PC. I'm looking forward to Playstation delivering a more powerful console so I can play their exclusives. i just hope they're up to par with some of the features that Xbox are offering.
