TLDR; Number 1 - great concept. AC2 - best game in the series. Brotherhood & Revelation - the Matrix sequels of video games, you wanted the end of the story but not like this. AC3 - hunting is awesome but the story basically Forrest Gumps you into the American revolution. Liberation - AC Dress Up Barbie. Black Flag - great game but would have been better with no assassins in it. Rogue - more of the same but a bit different. Unity - Ubisoft hubris simulator. Chronicles - what if we made Mark of the Ninja, but not as good & then did it two more times? Film - you won't understand it if you haven't played the games & you'll hate how much it tries to speed through three games worth of lore if you have. Syndicate - twinsies! Actually good but still the same formula. Origins - looks a like a true reboot of the series, time will tell.
I really hope they give this the time it needs before launch. Looks like a fun game so I'll be keen to play it on PC but only if it will actually perform well.
I'm actually playing through the Witcher 3 expansions again at the moment. CDPR make every other major dev look lazy. All the details that go into even the little things that many would never notice or appreciate come together to make something truly special. Look at the detail in every costume the nobles wear in Blood & Wine... now look at the power armour Bethesda are trying to sell you.
I'm pretty sure you don't need to know anything before playing this game.
They pretty much dumped the main story after the Ezio trilogy. You might get a few references but doubt they'd put up any barrier to entry if it would cost them a single sale.
I didn't really care about the nega-hype leading up to this, I gave it a chance. It wasn't worth it.
The casting or location choice don't bother me, I'm always down for a reinterpretation. The writing is what kills it. The Death Note anime series is an intelligent psychological thriller with one of the cleverest cat & mouse games you'll see in any media. It explores ethics & morals to a deep level & tells a story of how bad deeds with good intentions can lead to snowballing consequences to cover up one's actions. It keeps you guessing at every step & makes you think about the ethics it presented by the protagonist.
The Death Note Netflix just released is a film about an angsty kid with a Lady Macbeth girlfriend who kills people because he can. It has decent production values but the writing betrays a lacklustre execution of the core concept with no understanding of what made the anime good.
I haven't read the manga so I won't claim any knowledge there. All I can say is don't even bother watching this if you haven't seen the anime first.
I agree that Andromeda took way more flak than it deserved. It was still a fun game & I enjoyed playing it. It just felt a little bit like the work of 'the B Team'. I think they needed a few more experienced hands involved.
I would ask, "why would you ever settle for 30fps?" but I'm already stuck at, "why would you ever play an FPS with a controller?"
Too many enemies on screen is a pretty poor excuse. There should be a way to turn down shadows & post processing to increase framerate. Console gamers are clearly still being held back by aging hardware. It seems like more people are busy defending their purchases than demanding better performance though.
@gagula94: Because the name is what sells. Big corporations like Ubisoft are scared to put money behind anything that doesn't already have an established name. They'd rather tear down a franchise & build it up again than simply create something new.
I enjoyed Black Flag but personally I think it would have been a much better game if it had nothing to do with assassins. A straight up pirate RPG would have been much better.
This is just like every band who releases a new album. "This is totally new & different, it's way better than our old stuff. It's a bit like that one everybody likes though... definitely like that one."
If the AC franchise is going to continue at all, I'm glad they're changing things up but I'm not buying into any hype. I'll wait to see if it's actually any good.
