"increasing budget to upgrade PC"...what? PC gaming has never been more affordable than what its been the past 5~6 years. I built my first rig when 100MB of RAM cost $100.
I have a 7 year old i5 3570K running at default clocks and it exceeds Valve's VR recommendation. It's paired with a used GTX 1070.
If you buy used GPU's...and maybe resell the old one, minor upgrading is quite cost effective.
No problem with the design here. My PC lives in a "Phanteks Evolv Shift" case; very similar upright design. Though I will say mine is quite a bit more attractive :)
Been saying this about online-only games for some time now, back when Evolve and Titanfall released. Today's games are nothing more than disposable, long-term rentals.
If you must buy an online-only game, buy it at a HUGE discount; and for god sake, don't dump a sh!tload of money into useless DLC.
This is probably Valves way to get people back into the franchise, some for the first time. Also, VR isn't exactly cheap, so this release should help to expand VR ownership.
I know personally, I've been largely ignoring VR until I heard of this release. Alyx is likely a Proof of Concept before HL3.
