I feel that is the direction that most first person shooter single player campaigns go nowadays. In that particular case, I think it is because those games are more expected to be cinematic now. Before, you had a map that you went around til all the enemies were gone, or til you had collected all the proper keys, then it goes to the cutscene/score before moving to the next mission. Now, with immersion and cinematic feel being central, they change it to a linear corridor... I mean, "streamlined," experience with all the flash, explosions and story progression/shocking plot twists happening as you move on to perform your next shooting gallery sequence or quicktime sequence... ie Carnival funhouse.
Tough to choose just one but I'd go with this one
