Sony may want to, but it's pretty impossible nowadays. The PSX and PS2 were popular because they truly offered something for every gamer. If you didn't like western games for example, then there was plenty of quality eastern developers to choose from, and there was some decent FP games as well. What's more? Most of these game stayed exclusive and rarely multiplated. It's my belief now that the industry has gotten to the point to where there will no longer be a third-party exclusive king like in the old days. So no, I don't think sony will ever get back to that level. I think what we have now is how things will be for the foreseeable future: consoles only distinguishing themselves by FP and gimmicks. A sad state of console gaming really.
[QUOTE="Zaibach"]Nintendo raised alot of these guys, media and reviewers. To them nintendo invented gaming[QUOTE="tomarlyn"]
This is hilarious
Fanboys try to come up with solutions for things like local co-op in loyal defense of one tablet per system and its fine. Yet when other people try to come up with solutions for potential lack of common features like Hard Drives or DVD playback they're considered morons, because of the very shaky 'Nintendo is always right' mentality. If they even try and debate it they're just told to shut the hell up and wait for it to come out, really now
And another thing, its highly hypocritical to say DVD playback is pointless simply because people may have DVD players or other consoles. You have a computer, TV, radio, phone and probably a newspaper laying around somewhere. But Nintendo still thinks you need a news, weather, internet, community voting and horoscope channel on your Wii.
Double standards FTL, lets just have a thrashing good debate people and cut the one-upmanship.

I was a Sega kid actually. I'd still like to see Sega's hardware division rise from its grave, crushing all in its path!
It probably doesn't cost Nintendo anything to put news and weather on the Wii.
Sure it did. They had to pay a software developer to make it happen :P. Nothing is truly free you know. Not feeling the look, but guess I can get used to it.Wii U console shape and rear side revealed.
A closer look at the Wii U with a video inside.

For people who want to win the hardcore gamers back they don't seem to be trying to hard to put in features like a DVD/Blu-Ray playback or a unified online service, something that the two "last gen" consoles can already do.

Nintendo has always used their own format, and they never really cared about making their console a multi-media center.
Not to mention, Nintendo is strictly a GAME company. Sony and MS aren't just for the games, so that's another reason why we shouldn't be surprised by this. MS only makes software outside their gaming platform, so what's your point? If MS though including multimedia playback was a good idea, when they don't even specialize in it like Sony, then why doesn't Nintendo do the same for their systems?[QUOTE="2_Quiet_2_Riot"][QUOTE="ThePlothole"] You know the whole "value" argument didn't work for the PS3.ThePlothole
Technically, yes it did. Outside of the gaming industry, Hollywood fully supported the BR format all thanks to BR penetration made by Sony's PS3. Netflix is widely watched and preferred on none other than PS3.
PS3 may have had a few setbacks as far back to its launch, difficult & expensive architecture, and the whole hacking debacle, but nonetheless, PS3 is still a viable console with more value than the competition.
That's why developers are STILL flocking towards the PS3, unlike the Wii.
Yeah, outside the game industry. The PS3 sold better as a Blu--ray player than it did a game console in those early days. And I think that was Sony's plan TBH. Rightfully or Wrongfully, Sony wanted to win the format war, and they felt the only way to do that at the time was to include Blu-Ray into their console because standalone players weren't flying off the selves. I think the miscalculation sony made with the PS3 is that they thought every gamer would see the PS3 from consumer's electronics perspective and not from a gaming perspective. From a CEP, there is no doubt, the PS3 was a great value as it was universaly regarded as the best value for Blu-Ray player at that time. In addition to that, you could play games on it! For gamers though, Blu-Ray wasn't as important, so we didn't see the whole picture of the console if you will. In addition to that, developers weren't really supporting the PS3 in its early goings, so that's another reason why sales were sluggish. On topic: I don't know how much of the decision by Nintendo to use a reformatted Blu-Ray is to avoid licensing fees by sony or if its cause they just don't want to be seen using something they actively campaigned against using.Nope.
Handhelds are only popualr in Japan becuase consoles got too expensive for most Japanese developers to develop for on a consistent basis. Because of that, I think JRPGS are on their way out on consoles.
SE/Konami are exceptions becuase they got money, but even they have done thier fair share of PSP games.
No, if anyone was to enter the console race at this point it would be Apple. SEGA is NEVER COMING BACK.

I agree actually.
I can't see Sega coming back at this point. I don't think they have the amount of capital to even start R&D for a new console. Sega is fine how they are right now.
