I'm still pleased with my 640mb 8800GTS. It's one of the better computer related purchases I've made. I bought it in January 2007 for $330, and I don't think I've ever had a video card hold up so well over time. I can max out, or come pretty close to maxing out every game at 1680x1050, except Crysis.

It will probably be at least another year before I seriously consider getting a new video card. As the TC stated, the 9 and 200 series just aren't enough of an improvement over the 8 series to make them worthwhile for me.

Mine is running 24/7. It hibernates when not in use. I also don't overclock, so CPU scaling is enabled, which probably helps save some power as well.

I would go with a better PSU and motherboard, unless you want your PC to be horribly unstable. It's also pretty likely that PSU die quickly with any high powered video card. Wattage isn't the only thing you need to look at with a PSU. You also need to look at how many amps it's putting out on the 12V rails, and that one is quite awful. As far as the video cards on your list, the 9600GT, 9800GT, and Radeon 4850 should all do well in the games you mentioned.

Oh, and if your wondering why MGS is there it's because its my favourite game series of all time, all I got to say is Hideo Kojima is a genius and the series is just phenominal.

You lost any credibility you might have had with that statement.

Vista is fine. I liked some of the new features. I just didn't like all of the bloat and slowdown, and the fact that it wasn't fully compatible with either my soundcard or my tv tuner. Hopefully Windows 7 will have better optimization and compatiblity.

That's a good thing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Left 4 Dead. But it didn't offer enough content to hold my attention for long.

For PC games? Not much.

I only bought Sins of a Solar Empire and Left 4 Dead. So around $90 total. The only other game I would have bought was Mass Effect, but EA decided to infest it with DRM. I still played it, I just didn't buy it if you know what I mean...

I didn't buy much for the consoles either, mostly just rented. I bought GTA4 and Gears 2, both of which were rather meh IMHO, and I ended up selling them.

I thought this was a rather weak year for gaming in general.
