what about this card its pretty fast for a 7600GS

Sure, I guess. If I were you, though, I'd recommend just getting a cheaper model (a good one could be found for less than $100). If it's only meant to hold you over until Christmas, why spend more than you need to? I'd imagine the performance will be similar no matter which model you go with.

Which PSU do you have, though? I would want to be careful not to overload it (even if you can just manage to squeeze this card in), as it may become unstable later on-- especially if it's always going to run at full load.

If you are comfortable overclocking, I think you could easily squeeze some more performance out of it. Get the OEM X2 3600+ which is only $65. Then get the Artic Cooling $30 HSF. Get the $80 Biostar TFroce 550 motherboard, then drop the sound card. I have seen these components get past 2.7Ghz on stock volts. That PC Chips motherboard might not even support overclocking... Another thing, does Windows MCE still come with an upgrade coupon? If not, then just go for XP home or pony up for Vista Premium. Lastly, get at least a black combo drive for $25. I personally think Beige will look ugly and I imagine your friend will want to burn CDs. Karl_Bebop

I'd rather just get a decent processor and leave it be. I don't want my friend to have trouble with an unstable overclock later on (or he'll try to go farther and break something).

Sadly, I looked, and it doesn't seem that Windows XP wants to come with upgrade coupons anymore.

Thanks for the heads up on the drive, though. I'll have to give that a look-- I just picked some random, cheapy optical drive.

i just bought the 1900gt, its def the best card out for under 150 bucks, it out performs cards more than it, and its like 30 bucks cheaper than the 1950 pro, and only gets 5fps lower. its a great card. too bad you cant afford a core 2 duo, maybe wait to the price drop next month?ncderek

It's not for me, it's for a friend of mine. I've got no idea how long he can wait... I'll talk to him about it.

Thanks for the feedback, though.

Hey I am gonna get a new pc but i'm low on cash. Not sure if i should spend more money on video card, ram or processor.

How much do you think it would cost to have a store build a pc (i buy the parts on newegg)?

Where do i get this done? bestbuy for the geek squad guys? local shop?

Anyway, here's what i have, please give me pros/cons on my choices.

PC= http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8223193&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat103700050061&id=1166840115751

Video card= http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8223193&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat103700050061&id=1166840115751

Monitor= http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254018

Don't know if i should spend more on processor/ram instead of graphics. I would need a stronger PSU, right?

I pretty much want to play medium settings for games like oblivion, half life 2, doom3 and far cry and more

The video card link is the same as the "PC" link. If you're trying to say that the video card is an nVidia 6150 LE, I'd have to recommend you stay away from it.

As for building a PC, I've got no idea, but I'm sure a local PC store would be more than happy to build it. Or, you could build it yourself-- it's not hard.

I was looking to build a PC for a friend who is fed up with the family PC (2.4GHZ P4, FX 5200, 512MB RAM, need I go on?). I wanted to make this a $500 build, but sadly, Windows had to come in to ruin my plans. Oh well.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions? Will everything work together?

[QUOTE="dausley"]

[QUOTE="9mmSpliff"]well a new PSU is in order. Im sure a nice 450wt PSU will be fine. Around $60-$80 for that. Antec has the sweet spot for that area for good PSUs too.9mmSpliff

Yeah, but I'm sure my old 3GHZ P4 HT will bottleneck it.

Come to think of it, are there really any processors on AGP motherboards that won't bottleneck it?

Core 2 Duo AGP boards from ASRock

...Wow, that's kinda odd. I'm amazed there's a market for them.

3 or 4 months ago, the price of a 1GB of DDR2 PC2-5300 memory stick was over 100 dollars.

Now, Im seeing memory sticks for less than 60 dollars. what's goin on?

I've got no idea... However, it makes me happy to see 2GB of budget Corsair DDR2 RAM going for just over $100.
