And now I finally understand why the sheep in Wallace and Gromit is called Shaun.

That sheep looks brilliant though.

Congrats, and good on you for sticking around all this time :P Now you've reminded me I've been here for nearly 10 years as well. But it seems I started visiting OT too late because I never met any of these famous names like Sajedene and Ruby_Knight. All I remember is System Wars, a user there called PS2_Sux0rz or something like that who wound me up, and me getting suspended for some reason.

I think System Wars is the best thing GameSpot ever invented.

I think it would be better if they didn't use a proprietary format, deciding to use one after the PSP used a generic format seems like a massive step backward. That being said it wouldn't be a problem at all if they were priced fairly. The disparity in price between PSV memory and equivalent SD cards seems to be what everyone's picking up on. If it weren't for that I doubt many people would mind, the only other big problem with proprietary format is you can't use it in any device other than a PSV, but even if it took SD cards people would usually buy a card and dedicate it for use in their PSV rather than anything else.

I wouldn't say I get offended by any of it but it does bother me when games throw ridiculously proportioned women and lots of fanservice at me like I'm some drooling teenager, all I want to do is play my games, not ogle fantasy women. There's a time and a place for looking at that stuff and playing video games usually isn't it. To me it just seems patronising and demeaning toward the people buying your games (unless your intended audience is specifically people who enjoy it).

Plus not the argument you should be making: the argument you should be making is that the context of the situation is a jab at 4 chan, and it was poor a translation failure because in Japanese they wanted to pick on guys pretending to be girls on the internet, and in English they translated that into a slur.

XSEED said that the part of the game where the word is used is meant to parody the chan sites, where the term originated. In the context of those websites the term did originally mean just guys pretending to be girls on the internet to deliberately mislead/troll people rather than actual transgendered people, and wasn't recognised as a derogatory remark. Nonetheless it is unsurprising that the term's use has evolved and is now seen as a slur by the wider public. Therefore XSEED should have at least anticipated this and maybe could have considered a different word to avoid backlash. However it sounds to me like the word they picked does fit what the original japanese script would have said and the particular audience they had in mind for this game would recognise the word's meaning in this context.

The question is, is their job as translators simply to localise the game and reproduce the original intent as much as possible, or should they consider different attitudes and cultural sensitivities between Japan and where the game is being localised to, in order to avoid offence and misunderstanding?

The ex boyfriend added an update to his website correcting a date he'd written and said he doesn't have any reason to believe Zoe was sleeping with Nathan for anything in return, though others pointed out his chatlogs contradicted his own correction. We also know that at least one Kotaku journalist (not Nathan) is a regular donor to Zoe Quinn, listed as one of her patrons on Patreon. So if he's giving coverage to a developer whose work he is funding, then that would be a more obvious and less gossipy example of conflict of interest.

Frankly though I'm not convinced this is going to amount to anything, the whole event will probably die down into nothing. Lots of people are discussing it and coming out with observations of corruption in the game industry but none of them are working together to compile the main issues down on paper with evidence to support them, let alone a plan of what to do with it all or who to present it to.

I didn't know who phil fish was before all of this, and he's made a terrible first impression. Tut tut phil.

This scandal sounds like a tedious plot from an episode of eastenders but seems to have brough attention to a lot of dodginess within the industry so I hope this doesn't just get forgotten about.

Although OT is a wonderful forum full of mature, intelligent and well-adjusted people who could provide a satisfactory answer to your question, I feel that threads like this aren't in keeping with the forum's rustic aesthetic.

The crazy thing is most gaming sites are doing EVERYTHING they can to quiet this down. Most gaming sites, including Giantbomb and IGN are deleting posts and topics related to the story.

It's funny how they all speak out against shady practices in gaming.

Part of that is because people are going to the extremes of saying abusive things about her, and in some cases encouraging distribution of personal information. On that note I'd like to ask that you all be mature if you're going to discuss this. Her personal life and the things she's done aren't any of our business, and abusive posts about her and others don't have a place on Gamespot. However, the wider issue being discussed here is the relationships between journalists and developers in the games industry, which is something we should all be free to talk about. So please be mindful of this.
