I don't like the idea of harvesting embryos just for research, though if a person wants an abortion, then it would be a waste and a shame not to use it. I still don't like the idea of it, and I believe there are little to no cures with embryonic. With adult stem cells though, Adult stem cell treatments have been used for many years to treat successfully leukemia through bone marrow transplants.

What you believe is irrelevant. The point of research is to find out the facts and without research we will never know the full potential of embyronic stem cells

If abortions happen anyway, what is the harm of harvesting perfectly good stem cells from the fetuses? Abortions happen regardless. It strikes me as wasteful not to use something that could be of benefit to others from something that is going in the garbage can in the first place.Rekunta

The main problem with this thread is the title. If it had said should creationism be taught in science classes (in public schools) then it would have been a much more straight forward debate since the answer is obviously NO. However, if you are studying religions in an elective class then there is certainly an argument for discussing creationism but certainly not the teaching of it as a legitimate scientific theory

No..it's not. Again study theology. You are ill equipped to argue the Bible when you put your own interpretation on it.

LJS9502_basic

You can only put your own interpretation on the bible. Obviously it helps if you study it and other sources from the time and what other theologians have said on the subject to make more informed interpretations but in the end it can only be your own interpretation

I gave you the interpretation...you wanted to argue against it because you can't discredit the bible if you accept it as true. You only accept what you want to accept. What I told you is what theology would teach you...you know...theologians...academics....etc etc. I didn't make it up.

LJS9502_basic

Theology has many interpretations of biblical stories. You simply presented the one that most suits your world view. There is substantial evidence to suggest that the story of Noah and the flood is derived from Babylonian and earliermyths

Nope...theology is a discipline just like philosophy, literature, etc. There is a correct way to understand the bible. Most of the OT is written with symbolism that meant specific things to the people involved. Likewise, it's historical and knowledge of the world will help with the interpretations.

In addition, translations have occured with various words being simplified due to the language. Understanding a bit of what the original word referred to is important as well. English is a bit more limited than Greek for instance.

Simply taking a bible and reading it will not give you a clear understanding of exactly what was intended to be conveyed. And anyone doing so is ignorant of the book,

Firstly, i never said that simply reading the bible was enough to understand it.

There is indeed a correct way to go about understanding it, i even said what it is. But this leads to a variety of possible interpretations, that is why theology is still an active field of debate as theologians debate which interpretation is best or most likely to be accurate.

To go back to the flood story, what is your understanding of it? I ask this simply to illustrate the point that there is more than one way to interpret the myth

Passes the time at work, then I can go into real life at 6:00.LIKETOPLAYGAMES

Poor sod. Do you work 9-6? Working 9-5 does enough damage to me, that extra hour could result in a complete mental breakdown

im just curious (sorry for the possible offensive nature of this question), but for atheists who were once religious, did you become an atheist cuz you really thought in your heart there really was no God, or did you do it because you didn't like the rules imposed on you by the church?mig_killer2

When i was younger i just didnt like the rules or getting up early on sunday but as i got older and my understanding increased it was less and less about rebellion and more about there being no real reason for me to believe in a god or take the bible as anythingother than a book of morality fables

I understand why there's concern for Iran having nukes, but why would we get rid of ours?
Nukes are only really dangerous when in the hands of fanatics, now that everyone has them.
The only people who would launch one are people who don't care if they die along side everyone else.

thnickaman13

I honestly dont think any country will ever launch a nuke, it just wouldnt happen, there is no good out come for any one. With that in mind, theres no real point to have them so they should be disposed of to get them off the defence budgets of our countries so that the money spent on them can be used for better projects
