[QUOTE="THE_DRUGGIE"]One of my friends thinks that the Earth is 6,000 years old.lilburtonboy748
and.....Maybe you're being ignorant by not even considering his opinion.
No, THE_DRUGGIE is being intolerant. But its fair enough to be intolerant ofthe willfullystupid
This is the same way many people feel about matter in the universe.
Where I think religion is mistaken is in the interpretation that God is a "being", and humans are created in his image.
To me that is way to simpilistic and makes God mortal and prone to mistakes, yet religion seems to sell the notion that he is "all powerful and mighty". If this where the case, why is his "image" prone to diseases, etc? Apparently we are not a "perfect image" of the diety which to me renders religions whole argument false.
To me "God" is not a being, but rather all of the universesal laws we are trying to understand..And many we haven'tdetermined or discovered. It is the fabric of the universe.
God is gravity, the laws of physics, thermodynamics, why electrons and protons stabalize each other, why light travels at the speed it does, and on and on. This to me this represents a God that is far more complex than religion gives credit and explains why million have died fighting for their false "God" with no intervention by him/it. The reason why it doesn't intervene is because it is not alive and has no emotions or feelings. Emotions and feelings are from living organisms that evolved in the universe. God is not alive.

I'm not sure i understand what your getting at exactly. Do you think this god you describe created the universe through the laws of physics it put in place and is now essentialy inert because of this? Or are you saying thatwhat people call god is really just the interactions between forces and there is no god?
The Bible says God was never created. He has always been, even before time. That is tough to understand. I believe it though.Anamosa41
Why do you believe this? What got you to the point where that seemed a reasonable explination?
[QUOTE="Beaman"]you really need to stop trying to make controversial music topics, because you're really bad at it, not to add your opinions on music are horribly uninformed and ignorant.jimmygrace
Because my tastes differ from yours?
Probably because your very narrow minded when it comes to music
We cannot know for sure on where the universe was created. However I will tell you that it is very unlikely that everything started from the big bang.
BEAN_LARD_MULCH
True, but it is the best explination given what is currently known so as unlikely as it is, it is much more likely than anything else
IF the big bang were true, then that means that all energy was created, matter was created, elements were created. However that violates the second law of thermodynamics, energy cannot be created or destroyed. Plus, we all know that we cannot just conjure gold out of air.
BEAN_LARD_MULCH
Claims like that can effectively be disregarded since the laws of physics as we understand them break downin places of infinite mass such as would have been present at the big bang
Another thing I can't trust in the with regards to the creation of the universe is religion. It does NOT provide a solid enough explanation. If a God did indeed create the universe, then what created the God? We cannot answer these questions by simply saying " God was always there" Thats not a solid enough answer for humans to accept. Maybe to those who are religious, they will not question that, but there are those who think even further, challenge that belief therefore it cannot be set as the answer.
Some also say that the universe is expanding, however where is it expanding from? Where is the "center" that it is expanding from. If it is indeed expanding then there must be a center. Therefore some will wonder, what is at that center? A black hole? We simply just cannot know the answer to this, because the universe is much to vast to know how "wide" it is.BEAN_LARD_MULCH
The universe has been measured expanding so its more than just a theory
There is also the view that the universe is a sphere shape, like the earth. However If it is so, then why can't we break out of that sphere? If we tried to would we just hit an invisible wall? I don't think so. Therefore I think that there must be no end to the universe. If the universe is expanding, so we say its infinite, then what happens if we manage to obtain a speed greater than the rate at which its expanding? Would we get blackness? No ones knows.BEAN_LARD_MULCH
The theory isnt that we are trapped inside a giant soccer ball. Its more like space time is curved and if you travel far enough in one direction you will end up back where you started. There is nothing to break through, no invisible wall if you think that theory is true
This question simply cannot be answered, as most solutions we give violate somthing, or contradicts somthing that we have discovered. There is also the possibility that we have got it all wrong. The universe is somthing that is probably not to be understood by the human, as it is probably to much for a human to comprehend. There is also all this talk about different dimensions, which complicates things even more, as we cannot see past the third dimension.BEAN_LARD_MULCH
Bang on the money there
Hey guys. This is my first post as a Gamespot user and I have this to say about the topic of Christianity vs Evolution.
My main gripe is that their respective strengths highlight their completely different natures. Christianity and most every other religion serve (in my view) as a sort of group cohesion tool. The stories of the bible, including the creation of the earth and life, are all meant as moral guides for the masses. They teach good values such as 'don't murder people' and 'don't sleep with your neighbours wife'. This, I believe, was the main intention of Jesus and as such it is a very admirable one.
However the problem arises whenall aspects of these stories are taken as literal fact to be applied to what is a amoral and naturalistic world. Evolutionary theory and science in general seeks not to provide a moral guide to life. Rather it tries to determine the mechanics of life and the material world through observable experimentation.
This should mean that you canbe a christian and still accept a world that originated through evolution by natural selection and that you can be a Evolutionist but not live a ruthlessly selfish, amoral life. We can do this because of the fundamental divide between a rationally thinking mind and a materially dependant body.
So dont be mad with someone just because of their beliefs. The only two things that should matter in this life are the pursuitsfor truth, survival, loveand asound frame of ethics to live your life by.

Welcome to OT. I would advise leaving threads like this well alone unless you really want to get involved in serious flaming. Just one thing though, being an "evolutionist" doesnt automatically mean you are selfish and immoral, quite the opposite infact.
We play mario kart on it on a nearly daily basis
