It's rendering an entire city on-the-fly, which is an impressive feat in and of itself. So obviously it's not going to have the same level of detail as a game that renders a handful of characters in a shoebox-sized area, but it's still very impressive for what it does.UT_Wrestler

You need to play the PC version. Thats impressive. I wonder what GTA could be if it was a PS3 exclusive.

If your child asks you to buy one of those new gaming systems and you choose a Wii because its inexpensive or you think it can help them exercise then shame on you.

I just assumed it got a 10 for graphics because I remember the sub category system only disappeared a while ago. Oh well. What do you guys think it would have gotten and what does it get now?

When GTA 4 was released for consoles, it got a 10 for graphics. Was that the standard then and what would it get for graphics now?

Im pretty damn sure large scale maps can be done with the engine and if it cant, ND can make it work.

S0lidSnake

Just curious. Do you have any experience designing graphics engines on the PS3? How can you be so sure?

No, but ND said their engine can do everything.

No seriously though, I dont have any experience but I think its safe to assume these things, especially after seeing what theyve done with this game.

[QUOTE="rragnaar"]It might look good, but I didn't see anything in Uncharted 2's engine that would lead me to believe that it can handle a large scale dynamic environment populated with cars and pedestrians. Uncharted 2 looks great, but the game is very static when compared to what is going on in a game like GTA or Assassin's Creed. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Uncharted 2's engine relies more on canned animations and isn't doing much with physics. I honestly think Rockstar's current engine is fantastic. I'd like to see some destructible environments, but I can understand why they don't allow you to level entire city blocks in GTA, as it could hinder level design if you blew up a building in one mission that comes into play in a later one.rragnaar

Are you sure?

I've played the game. A lot. That city looks great, but it isn't alive. There isn't a dynamic day and night cycle with real time lighting, there aren't cars driving around, and pedestrians on the streets, and while that vista looks great, it is little more than a high res backdrop. You can't go and explore the whole city.

Well just because there isnt doesnt mean there cant be. It just so happens Uncharted 2 doesnt take place where there are lots of cars and pedestrians walking around. ND seems real confident in their engine. The game doesnt even need to be installed to the HDD, so that says a lot about what can be done with streaming resources. The dynamic day and night can be done easily.

Im pretty damn sure large scale maps can be done with the engine and if it cant, ND can make it work.
