Finished Oblivion, Not Done Yet.

While my son swung back and forth feet away to white noise, I put my new copy of Gears of War aside, and I silently finished the main quest in Oblivion. The endgame plays out like a marble on a hill, you just speed down to the end without much choice in direction, but it's a fun little roll. So the gates are now closed, the big threat is gone, and it seems like I have too much more to do to even consider closing the book on this game. Just downloaded the latest Knights addition- which I don't even need, as there are countless flowers to pick, rivers to swim, caves, caverns, and dungeons to explore and side quests to complete. Guess I can stop hoarding soul gems.

This Bond's For You

I recently took in the new James Bond film Casino Royale and am thrilled with the result. I've seen every Bond film, except the last one (I just couldn't take an invisible car in an ice castle), and although I was raised on Moore, but prefer Connery, and accepted Brosnan as much as I did Dalton (he got a bad rap), I can honestly say that Craig's new take on Bond makes this perhaps most entertaining film in the series. Certainly the most unique. That is a controversial statement, and it even pisses me off that I have to admit it to myself. Maybe Goldfinger is better, in a classic Bond sense, but this Casino Royale was simply entertaining from start to finish. In short, imagine your average Bond film, mixed with The Borne Identity action and realism, starring Steve McQueen.

Ok BSG, I get it.

I am one big BSG fan. I love how it's a keen commentary on our times. I have very little to complain about the show. But this year, isn't the veil of reality getting pretty thin?... almost too obvious?

POLL: Remake vs Original

It's not very often that a remake is better than the original. My current pick for best tv remake has to be Battlestar Galactica. It's hands down a better show than the late 1970s original. The first BSG was fun for the time, and has a fond place in my heart as something I watched as a kid a year after having my mind blown by Star Wars.

Question (5 points) What TV show remakes are better than the original? Bonus Question (2 point): What feature films are better than the TV shows that inspired them? Bonus Question No. 2 (2 points) What TV shows based on films are better than the film that inspired them?

Hmm, Heroes

When the plot of Heroes was first described to me, I instantly thought this was a show I would dig. But after seeing the preview, it looks like someone got their hands on a good idea and made it with a heavy handed dose of TV formula which is never, ever, ever a good thing. Oh well, I could be wrong, it certainly wouldn't be the first time: who knew Buffy would be such a great 7 years of tv.

Daredevil, what did they do to you?

Cleaning out my basement I came across a bag full of useless VHS tapes and DVDs I wish I never bought. Right on top, appropriately was the Ben Will Hunting mess Daredevil - The Directors Cut. First, let me explain that Daredevil was my comic book growing up. My first issue, was from the Frank Miller era, and the dark and dirty ninja noir story hooked me line and sinker for decades, I even kept buying Daredevil during the long bad years (issues 300-ish to 380). So I was pretty mixed emotionally when I heard that they were making a DD movie. On one hand I wanted to see what they would do with this great content, especially after seeing how well X-Men was treated, which I would think is a harder subject to do on film than the more real world of Daredevil. But, on the other hand, I knew it would never live up to the book, especially the Miller era that it was to be based on, wisely. What I didn't fathom is just how wrong they would end up making it. Fanatically bad. Shameful. Along with Catwoman, and FF, a strong argument to not make movies based on comic books. So, why did I buy the directors cut DVD if I hated the movie so much? Because I wanted it to be good. I thought to myself perhaps the studio messed it up and the Directors cut would be a totally different movie, the true vision of a fan-boy director. But alas, it was just a longer version of the same crappy movie. So many things wrong with this movie, I can't even begin, and Ben Affleck is the least of its issues. This was supposed to be Miller's DD? They could have done it like Sin City and it would have rocked. But instead they did it like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, no.. actually this makes that disgrace actually seem decent. this was just poo, though and through. Obviously, I didn't take the bait the second time around, I easily passed on the Elektra DVD Special Editions. So I'm learning.
