An angel returned

That night through the sky
But time it was short
He had to decide

And so as he flew
Back over the land
A gift for his Lord
Was there in his hand

It was the glow of a light
It was the heart of a song
It was the tear of a child
Where they never belonged
It was the wish of a soul
On an old neon light
And the Lord smiled at him
On that cold winter night

Hear as they ring through the night
Kyrie among nations
Kyrie among nations
Kyrie among nations
Here the bells ring through the night

Kyrie among nations
Kyrie among nations
Kyrie among nations
Hear as they ring through the night

Listen to the bells as they ring
Listen to the message they bring
Listen to the sound
As they sing as one voice in the night

Hoping that we'll all understand
Every dream we have's in our hands
And for every bell
May they ring all through the night

Kyrie among nations
Kyrie among nations
Kyrie among nations
Hear as they ring through the night

Kyrie among nations
Kyrie among nations
Kyrie among nations
Here as they ring through the night

Listen to the bells as they ring
Listen to the message they bring
Listen to the sound as they sing
As one voice in the night

Hoping that we'll all understand
Every dream we have's in our hands
And for every bell
May they ring all through your life

And so with his story over
And our bottle nearly through
I asked, did this really happen?
He swore every word was true

Then he said I see you're puzzled
For your mind tells you to doubt me
That my story can't be true
But your heart tells you, it might be

He then asked, did it entertain me
And I admitted it had charm
Then he said perhaps you have learned something
Or at worst I've done no harm

Then he rose up from his chair
And he said it's time that he should leave
But may God keep and protect you
This and every Christmas Eve

Then he left through the front door
And I ran out to ask him back
But he was already gone
And stranger still he left no tracks

So I walked back to my home
Recalling all I've heard and seen
And for the first time since my childhood
That night I dreamed a Christmas dream

Whatever you are doing this holiday, be it staying in with your family, visiting your spouse or lover or traveling great distances to visit your relatives, be safe and all of you have a very merry Christmas on me. Neverforget the reason for the season, as so many do. It's not about getting presents. It isn't about attempting to find that new hot toy, and it certainly isn't about running over everyone that gets inbetween you and the previously mentioned toy. Whether you believe that hte son of God was born aon this day (or during warmer weather as is commonly believed), the message is the same. If you think more highly of Santa than you do of Christ or the other way arround. If you dislike both of them, the underlying message of Christmas is the same. The season is about love. Know this. Practice this. It isn't just about love of your friends and family. Show courtesy and respect when you are doing hectic last minute shopping tomorrow. Everyone has the same goal in mind and everyone would like it to be as pleasent as possible. Running over one anotehr and all the other stuff htat happens this time a year goes 100% against everythign that Christmas stands for. You would be surprised just how much a simple smile, nod of aknowledgement and 'merry Christmas' can brighten up someones day, so I ask you. Be curteous. Hjave a happy and safe holday season from me and the others that work so hard on From Pong to Eternity as well. Merry Christmas to all. I leave you with some music

Merry Christmas

An angel came down
One night to the earth
A mission from God
To find out the worth

Of everything that
His children had done
Since that winter night
The birth of His son

And then a sound filled the night
In the cold winter air
And in the midst of his flight
It was holding him there

And as he looked toward the earth
For the source of this sound
On that cold winter night
It was pulling him down

To bring something back
This angel was told
That no one could touch
But angels could hold

So on that night
When the sky had cleared
Among all the stars
An angel appeared

And then a sound filled the night
In the cold winter air
And in the midst of his flight
It was holding him there

And as he looked towards the earth
For the source of this sound
On that cold winter night
It was pulling him down

FPTE #35 - The End of the Begining

I am going to make this quick because I do not feel well and want to go lay down, but the new FPTE comic is up. It is called The Begining of the End http://fpte.topcities.com/frames.htm by reading it, you can probably guess what it is about. Anyway, check it out. Join the forums. Drop us a line telling us your thoughts. Thanks for reading. FPTE really does appreciate it's readers

Sony is getting it right

Before I even begin, let me state that I am well aware that even suggesting that Sony is actually doing something write is bait for a flame war. I am well aware that someone is likely to flame me for having said this in the first place. Rest assured that a flame war is the last thing I want to start with this post. I have absolutely nothing against the X-Box 360 (infact, that is the only item on my Christmas list this year. I want Mass Effect) or the Nintendo Wii. Both are excellent systems that seem to get praised everywhere you look. The Playstation 3 is different, however. People seem to want to insult the system left and right, even if there isn't a strong basis to do so. This is more of a response to that than anything else. The two primary arguments against the PS3 are that it has no games and that it is too expensive. Both reasons either have been erased or are currently in the process of being erased. Why is there still such endearing hatred for the Playstation 3? If you ask me, Sony has been doing alot of things right recently

Exclusives -

What is probably the biggest complaint against the Playstation 3 is that it largely lacks games that are not exclusive. To this day. I have heard people complain about this on various video game related forums. It is usually followed by someone rattling off a list of Playstation 3 exclusives, but that is beside the point. Why are people still using this to drag the PS3 down? It may not have as many console exclusives as the X-Box 360, but the 360 has also been out a year longer. For a while, it was true that the Playstation 3 didn't have that many exclusive games for it, but this wrong has been writed in the last few months with the release of quite a few great games, including some must haves. This begs the question of why people are still using this argument against the Playstation 3? It's almost as if people turn a blind eye to the fact that it is getting games as of late, but why?

I may not be able to answer that question, but I can tell you for certain that the Playstation 3 has a decent collection of exclusive games now. It really all started at launch with Resistance: Fall of Man, which is an excellent shooter from acclaimed developers Insomniac. It featured very cool weapons and fantastic multiplayer. The problem was that, for some time, it was about all that the PS3 owners had to show off their system. It was the only game that set it apart. There were other good games on the system, but many of them were out on other systems as well.

Anyway, Sony added to their catalog of games with the release of Motostorm. I am not big on racing games, but I won't lie. Motostorm is fun. It needed more content at launch for sure. It's lack of depth was disappointing, but the game was a technical showcase for the PS3, especially with it's impressive crashes, and it was alot of fun. It may not be a must have, but it isn't gad either. The Playstation finally had a second great exclusive, but the flood gates didn't open until Warhawk hit the system. Ever since that game (a must have in the eyes of many, and I can understand why. The dog figths are amazing), the PS3 has been getting a fairly steady stream of good exclusives, including, but not limited to, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction. Those that bought the system finally have a nice selection of games that they can use to show people "This is why the system is cool." The system has a bright future as well, with upcoming titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Haze, White Knight Story and Killzone 2.

Playstation Network -

Anyoe that had the network adapter for the Playstation 2 and a Playstation 3 will tell you that the Playstation Network has improved a ton from it's humble and not so well thought out beginings on the Playstation 2. Gone are the days of having a different account for every game that you play online and friends lists for each individual one. Gone are the days of trying to keep up with your friends every time they got an online enabled game. The Playstation Network, even in it's current form, offers a metric ton of improvements over it's previous incarnation. You log into the PSN from the main menu of the PS3, or you can set it up to log you in automatically. You can keep a friends list. You can send and recieve messages and files. You can browse the internet and invite friends into voice chat. You can also DL items off of the internet to the system's harddrive. There is also the recently added information board that keeps you informed on the latest Playstation news and deals. It may be minor, but it is a nice touch and is appreciated. All of this is infinitely better than what was on the PS2, but it just scratches the surface.

Where the big improvement comes in is in the online play. There is no excessively long waiting period to get online fron the PS23 like there was for the PS2. If you remember the PS2's online, every game had to check for the network adapter. Then it checked for the configurations. It checked for the online data for that particular game and, if there was an update, it would check for that too. It was annoying, to say the least. The Playstation 3 has the option of always being connected, which means you skip ALL of that and go straight to the online mode. In the games where the online is good, you can bring up your friends lists. ?You can also, quite often, look at leaderboards, keep stats in ranked and unranked matches, increase your rank online and join clans. All of this is present in Resistance: Fall of Man, which shines as a primary example of how to do a PS3 online game right

The PSN is only going to get better. Early next year, Sony will finally release Home, which will completely renovate their online service. The ycould have merely copied X-Box Live, but they decided to do something that is a bit more fresh and different. Instead of just having chat rooms, Sony is gifting it's fans with a massive online world where you can create and customize your own character and personal space, that you can invite your friends back to if you want. There is a virutal PSP that allows for many functions, including launching a game from Home, which is a vital feature if it is going to be worth it's weight. I don't know about anyone else, but I an very excited a bout Home. Sony finally has a good, solid plan for their online service, and they intend ot take it to the next level

Downloadable content -

I am not going to knock on the content DL for the 360 or the Wii. I like retro and classic video games as much as the next guy, and I appreciate that all three consoles are doing this, however, Sony deffinitely has the right idea with downloadable content. They are focused on creating original games (that are quite often quirky and innovative). They may be short, but what can you expect for 5 dollars huh? Doing original games is a great idea. It gives playeers those little time wasters and games that are innovative and fun to mess around with. Think about it. What are the most talked about downloadable games? Is it things we have played before or is it Flow, Calling All Cars and Everyday Shooter? What gets more coverage from gaming websites such as IGN? It would be nice just to get regular games, but the fact that Sony is focused on making quirky games such as Echochrome and Flower, it turns heads because no one has ever seen anything like that. People think "I could pay five bucks to see what that's all about."

Ad campaign

Ok. I will openly admit that the ad campaign for the Playstation 3 for most of it's life was very very strange. The early adds featured the PS3 sitting in a white room, and the Sixaxis would levitate and do something like tilt one direction and pull eggs toward it or a giant dragon would crash through one wall and hte name of a game woiuld be given. These comercials were not good ones. Instead of making people go "Wow that system looks cool," they made people sit back and go "Wait....what? Someone tell me what I just watched." They had a serious 'what the heck' factor to them, and video game adds should not do that. We all know that there were any number of adds for the Playstation 2 and it's games that were good, so what happened? Why the strange adds for the PS3?

Thankfully, this has been righted recently. Sony is finally starting to create good adds for the Playstation 3. They are making adds that make the system look good and cool instead of odd like you have no idea what you are buying or that the add was even about a game (would you if the Ps3 wasn't there anyway? Think aobut it). What are they doing differently? Well, the short answer is everything. The new adds feature heavy, adrenaline fueled rock riffs for music with lyrics that challenge you to re-evaluate whether or not you want the Playstation 3. This sets the mood, and the new commercials show action shots of some of the systems better games, and some of it's upcoming titles that really help to drive home the point. Gone are the days "Dude, what did I just watch? Welcome to the days of "Dude the PS3 looks AWESOME." The ads that the yare doign now are infinitely better.

Anyway, this is getting excessively long, so I am going to wrap it up. The final thing that Sony is doing right is dropping hte price. Teh Playstation 3 starts at 400 dollars, which people cannot complain about too much, really. The most exlensive 360 is 50 dollars more and the Pro is 50 dollars less. It's not a bad price. The 360 launched at that price and, for what you are getting, it's a good deal as well. Sales are showing that what Sony is doing is actually working. Sales have increased significantly recently and the system has even outsild the Wii in Japan for 3 weeks in a row. I doubt that Sony willreach their sales goal, but it's nice to see people starting to come around. I am no fanboy, but it is a good system that has gotten a bad rep. Sony has pretty much fixed that at this point, and hte PS3 should enjoy a bright future.

FPTE #34 - Random Acts of D'oh

Sorry for the long gap in between comics. Eric and I have been through alot lately and most if it isn't good. Due to circumstances beyond our control, him and I couldn't get to scripting anything for quite some time. IT is frustrating, to say the least. None the less, we scripted one yesterday. It stars Homer. Head on over to the site and check it out. Join the forum and drop your thoughts in the weekly thread http://fpte.topcities.com/frames.htm

The User Soap Box: A good idea gone array

Let me start off by saying that I love the very idea of the Gamespot User Soap Box. It ireally is a fantastic idea. More people than just htose that work for Gamespot have noteworthy opinions, and it gives is there to give those people a chance to voice those opinions. I have also quite enjoyed reading some of the blogs that have appeared on the user soap box, and I think that it is wonderful that Gamespot gives it's users more of a voice than most other sites. Not only do I have a blog, but I may be featured on the front page of the site? How cool is that? Infact, in my opinion, there have been some good blog posts featured in the user soap box. I have read some interesting articles in it, as well as some unique perspectives and good and well thought out opinions.

This probably leaves you wondering I just called it a good idea gone array. If you ask me, the user soap box is an excellent idea in theory, but, in practice, it falls apart. The idea behind a user soap box is to allow the Gamespot users voice their opinions to a much wider audience because hte opinions are good and noteworthy, but the Soap Box only does this on a small scale, which, when you take into consideration just how large the Gamespot community is, is very disappointing.

What do I mean? Well, I cannot be the only here that has noticed that the user soap box, more often than not, features the same select group of users all the time. I have seen blog post after blog post after blog post pass through it from weemadango or vikinwwu, as examples. I have nothing against these two. They appear to be well educated gamers who know how to voice their opinions very well, but I cannot help but feel a little cheated for the community as a whole when no one else gets their day in the sun on the User Soap Box. Gamespot is a massive community. Surely there are many other gamers out there that deserve it just as much as the select group that actually frequently has their blog posts apepar on there. Why don't you see these people on there? Why is there so little variation? It makes the thing feel like it is stuck in a rut or that it has gone horribly wrong. It can also seem like it is glorifying a select few people above everyone else.

Am I saying that I should be on the User Soap Box? No. Of course not. I cannot deny that that would be cool, though I am merely saying that, in order for it to work, atleast on my eyes, the thing needs alot more variation than it already has. I know that there are other gamers out there who write up well thought out blog posts explaining their opinions on various things about the gaming community that don't get featured. There are some on my list of friends on this site. SonicHomeBoy springs instantly to mind as someone who goes above and beyond the call of duty with his blog. Where is his day in the sun? Is it going to come? As for me, I do try to write blogs that are well thought out and interesting to read. I don't want my blog to be boring. Point and case, IU have been thinking about how this blog would go for an entire week now. The soap box is a nice idea, but, untill we get more variation in who is featured on the thing, it will nto work in practice.

The term 'fanboy' gets tossed arround ALOT

If you know me, then you surely know my stance on the whole console war. I want all 3 systems and refuse to dedicate myself to any particular console. I am, in no way, a fanboy. I am not biased towards one console or another. If it were up to me, the consoles would co exist peacefully without people constantly arguing over which one is better. It's sad to think that so many people deprive themselves of good games just because it comes to a system that they don't feel like supporting for whatever reason. As CTRL+ALT+DEL said, "And as an argument started among hte fanboys as to which console would be the greatest, and the prophet, knowing their thoughts, spoke, "He who would recognize that gaming is glorious and not prejudiced based on platform, is he who would know the love of the gods and the warmth of our heaven arcadion." That quote is from the series of comics where Ethan created the Church of Gaming. It may be part of a joke, but the basics behind it do ring true. Don't hate on any console. Love them all to get the full video game experience. Every console has great games. Why limit yourself?

That being said, the term 'fanboy' gets thrown around alot on video game related forums. I took note of this the other day when the PS3 was brought up in a Resident Evil 5 thread in a X-Box forum. People were trash talking it when they didn't own the system. I stated that, from personal experience, the PS3 is a great system. I defended it against an ignorant onslaught, and I got called a PS3 fanboy for it. Think about that. If I was a PS3 fanboy, why would I be on a X-Box forum? That doesn't make sense. Yes I do like the PS3. IT is a great system with some great games on it. Maybe it doesn't have as many as the 360, but that system has also been out for a year longer than the PS3 has. That gives it time to stockpile more games. Defending a console doesn't necessarily make you a fanboy of that console. IT just means you like it. It is easy to like a console without being a fanboy of it. People don't seem to understand this, which results in the word 'fanboy' being thrown around alot more than it should be. As I said, being called a fanboy got me to thinking. It is one of hte problems with internet forums. People think you are stupid, fanboyish or whatever for having an opinion that differs from theirs. If you ask me,. the people blindly attacking the PS3 were being a hell of alot mroe fanboyish than I was "Oh. X-Box reules. Screw PS3." Have you even played it or do you just say "It has no games. It sucks. I haven't played Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk or Heavenly Sword, but they suck?" How do you know? How do you know the system sucks if you haven't played it? Look at me. I don't own a 360, but I don't trash talk it either. Infact, it is the only item on my Christmas list. I want one and I intend to get Mass Effect and Blue Dragon for it.

This is just one of the problems with video game forums now days. The sad fact is that most problems on video game forums can be solved one of two ways: by thinking before you speak or by doing your research before you make claims that someone could see as assanine. If the hatred and consstant arguments are going to stop, people are going to need to think before they type anything down. "How will this effect people? Am I going to piss someone off imminensely by saying this? Will someone be offended by my saying this?" If the answer is yes, it might be better off if it gets posts. There are exceptions to every rule, of course. Yoiu cannot please everyone and you never know what people are giong to take issue with, but there are some things that we all know for a fact that will anger people, yet we say them anyway. Doing so only contributes to problems like heated arguments over what console is better that, quite often, wind up being insult fests, which is just sad. If you are going to call someone a fanboy, fine, but don't do it for a stupid reason like "he disagrees with me."

I haven't updated about my life in quite some time, have I? I wil ldo so now. I eventually wound up hating my job. It wasn't the job itself. IT was the people that ran it. They had no business managing anyone. They never hired new people. We must have had 7 people quit and htey hired 2 people to replace them. They trained one of those two. For the rest of the shifts, they brought over someone from anotehr HMS Host owned store and had them help us. Yeah. That's great. LEt me work with someone that has no idea what the yare doing on a busy day so that I don't have time to train them instead iof hiring and training new people. I was having to do about 4 days work during the week day because they would have people there that didn't know what they were doing. I would get there and do a 4 hour shift and have more work than I could cram into 4 hours. I would get behind. Instead of coming over to help me, like they said they would, the managers got upset with me for falling behind. WELL, I'M SORRY! I cannot keep up with all of it. Yeah. Screw that job. I quit about a week ago. I no longer work at Sbarros. I am, once again, looking for a job. I hate job hunting. It is such a pain in the ass and it usually takes me a while to find a job. I know I should have waited to quit. It was stupid, but I couldn't stand just being at work it pissed me off so bad

I beat Bioshock. I liked the game quite a bit, but it is overrated. The game looks and sounds incredible. It is alot of fun to play as well, but it isn't as in depth as it was advertised to be. IT was advertised as the second coming of Deus Ex, and it's not. All of it's deepest elements are implemented in ways that are shallow. Want to upgrade your health? Buy it with Adam. Want to upgrade your weapon? Do it at an upgrade station. Want toinvent a new type of ammo? You purchase it. I thought that it was going to be you actually invent your own ammo, like mix different things and coat bullets in it or something like that. Liike addint a poison effect to a bullet or something. It wasn't. This was very disappointing about the game. It actually made me appreciate STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl more than I already did. Taht game was ALOT more in depth than Bioshock is. The story to Bioshock was predictable as well. People rave on and on about how great it is. I must have missed something. It isn't a bad story, but it has one major plot twist in it. Just one. HAving two endings is nice, but the two endings are also predictable. In one you are a flower child. In the other, you would rip Satans heart out and show it to him as he died. There is no inbetween. It owuld be nice to have an inbetween some time. Last, but not least, the game has absolutely no difficulty in it. I died maybe twice in the 15 hours that it took me to beat that game, and it was always because I made some sort of mistake. Splicers were easy as hell and taking photos of them only made them easier. Speaking of the camera, it didn't expose a weakness like it was advertised to do. It usually did something like increase your damage against that enemy type. That was also a bit disappointing about it. I would rate the game about an 8.5. It is not GOTY material

As for something that is GOTY material, I got the Orange Box. What can I say about this game that hasn't already been said? You won't find a better deal that doesn't involve some type of garage sale or ebay in the history of video games. It is 5 video games for the price of one. That is sweet in and of itself. When you take into consideration that it is 5 absolutely masterful video games for the price of one, you can clearly see why the Orange Box goes above and beyond the call of duty. Let me start off with Portal. I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about Portal, aside from the fact that there isn't enough of it. Then again, I must wonder if it is possible for there to be enough of it. The game is that good. Portal is a mind bending first person puzzle game. You won't be shooting things, though tere are turrets that will shoot at you. Your only defense against them is a weapon that creates 2 portals, an entrance and an exit. There are a bunch of ingenious puzzles to solve in Portal. I expected this. What I didn't expect was the black humor. The entire game, there is a computer named GLaDos talking to you. It reminds me of Shodan, but it's not creepy. This computer is very funny. It's black humor, but wait until you hear the end song. It is great. Half Life 2: Episode 2 is even better than I thought it would be. It is the most revealing part of the HL storyline yet. You learn quite a bit. It has a shocking ending as well. It ends in a cliff hanger, but it is nothing like how the first two ended. It makes me want to play the third one NOW. The game is alot of fun. The new enemies will make your palms sweat and hte final battle is absolutely intense. There is a new weapon that you use the gravity gun to throw. IT is alot of fun to use. I qwon't spoil it for you, as it is part of the overall storyline. If you don't yet love the vortigaunts, you will after this one. Team Fortress 2 is the weakest link. That being said, it is alot of fun to play. The lack of maps is disappointing. Each map is specific to one type of game. IT i9s a shame that you cannot play all types on one map, though. The character classes are extremely well balanced and fun to play It is a fantastic online game. The design is great and it has some good humor to it as well, but the lack of maps is just disappointing. That being said. the Orange Box is GOTY material. Even if you have played and beaten HL2 and Episode 1, be sure to pick this one up.

I wish my comic had more readers. I enjoy doing it and Eric and I have put alot of work into it. We have 33 comics up now and a small selection of reviews. I intend to do more things to add more content to the site in the future as well, but I want more fans. No one ever joins our forum, which bothers me. We created it with the intention of creating a community arround hte comic. It takes time, but the forum has 8 memebers. There are more than 8 people that read the comic every week. Why have they not joined the forum? It seems that I advertise on more and more sites, but the fanbase will not grow. Why? Why won't the fanbase grow? It's kind of annoying. It is a comic about gamers by gamers for gamers. Eric and I think we are doing a decent job evolving the characters and trying to create a storyline that people want to read, We also think that hte humor is getting better as well, but it is disappointing that so few people read it. Please spread the word if you like my comic. Two people can only do so much toward having the fanbase grow. The comic is a source of pride for me. I like doing it. I do my best to get more readers. I work hard every week, but it seems like it hasn't gone anywhere in quite some time.

I finally picked my books back up. Reading is hard for me. It always has been. I havee a tendancy to get distracted by other things and quit reading for months at a time. I did this recently and have not finished Game of Thrones or Voices from Chernobyl yet because of it. I got distratcted mostly by video games. I do love to read, but, like I said, it is hard for me. I have a tendancy to read something, forget what I just read (my short term memory is shot to hell) and have to read it again. It is like I will finish with a paragraph and go "wait....what?" It significantly slows down the process of reading. I know why it is. I know why I have this problem, but I would prefer to not talk about that. Anyway, as I said, I started reading again. I am almost done with part 2 of Voices from Chernobyl. I have about 10 pages left in part 2. I will finish it tonight. This book is excellent. For those that do not know, Voices from Chernobyl is a book of collections of monologues from interviews of people that survivled the incident in Chernobyl 20 years ago. It is very raw and powerful. It may not be Tolkien quality writing (after all, it was, originally, just people talking) but it has raw emotions behind it all that really help to drive it home. IT is an excellent book and, if you have an interest in Chernobyl, it is well worth your time. You are sure to learn alot about things that went on there that people would rather not tell you about. Also, I picked up another book today. It is called Something From the Nightside by Simon R Green. It seems to be a macrabef horror mystery type story. I have read other 6 other books by Simon R Green (the Deathstalker novels) and they were all excellent. They wre all sci fi, but I figured I might give this one a try as well.

I think I have said enough. This turned out to be alot longer than I thought it would be. Maybe I shouldn't combine my thought provoking entries with my entries about my life. I don't know. They always turn out to be incredibly long when I do that. I don't write short journal entires anyway. When I write one. I always try to do atleast some planning in advance so that I have some idea of what I am going to say when I start typing. I usually wind up adding things that I think of as I type, though., so you are getting a mix of thought out things and on the spot comments that just occur to me naturally. Anyway, I am going to wrap up this post. Tomorrow I am going job hunting. I might go with my friend John if he wants to come. Wish me luck. It is the holiday season, so I think I may be able to find one rather quickly. I hope. I need one ASAP at any rate. I finally have cash register experience, so that's good. I'm out. Until next time, cya! (And you can't kill the metal!!!)

FPTE #33 - Guitar Zero 3: Lamers of Rock

Ok. I didn't have internet on Wednesday or most of Thursday, so Eric and I were not able to script until yesterday. I am sorry about that. After scripting yesterday. I had alot of other things I had to take care of and didn't get around to actually building the comic until late at night. I didn't have it finished until 2 AM. There is a comic this week, though, for those of you missing your FPTE fix. It is the second ever FPTE side comic, and, as you guessed, it relates to Guitar Hero

Is originality too much to ask for?

The gaming genre is and has always been a quickly growing and moving medium. . One system gets released. 5 years later, we have the next gen version with tons of new features we didn't even know we wanted. There are innovative games like Bioshock, Portal or Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl that help to push genres and blur the lines between them buy combining great ideas from multiple genres into one game. Below the surface, however, there is also a lack of movement. There are things that the industry just refuses to leave behind, which can make it seem stuck in one place at times. Many of these cliches desperately need to be dropped in favor of new ideas. While they might have been a good idea at one point or another, that point has long past. Let' explore these shall we

Crates and barrels as space fillers -

While there are many genres that do this one, the obviously guilty party is the first person shooter. FPS is my favorite genre, as Doom was the game that made me a gamer some 14 years ago, but what worked well for Doom back then is just tiresome now days. Doom featured alot of exploding barrels that were usually placed in areas with alot of enemies to give the player a tactical advantage when he was hopelessly outnumbered. It was a brilliant idea at the time. I loved it, and I am sure many of you did as well. Fourteen years later, first (and third) person shooters still have exploding barrels all over the place. It doesn't even present an advantate to the player anymore. Enemy AIs have evolved to the point where they are smart enough to not stand next to the barrel anymore. Why, then, are we still using this age old trick? We should have abandoned these when they ceased to work to our advantage. Now, enemies shoot them if you are circle strafing and get too close to them. What once worked for us is now working against us. Then there is crates. They were used to fill in space all those years ago, and every FPS known to man still uses them to fill space. Why? Quite often, you can't even destroy them. Again, why? Why can't I destroy these crates? If you absolutely have to put crates in your game, have the common sense to make them breakable, preferably with items

Amnesia as a plot device -

"Oh...My head. I think I lost my memory." Give me a break. Amnesia isn't common among people, so why is it that every third video game character has no memory? JRPGs, I am looking at you! It is an old and overdone plot device. Is it really that hard tro find other reasons why the main character doesn't know what is going on in the world? Maybe there were things going on behind the scenes in his past that he didn't know about, like he was being used? Maybe he is visiting another world that isn't familiar to him, so everything is new? Maybe he just doesn't pay attention to politics? See. I just came up with three ways to avoid this cliche. If I can sit here, type and come up with them in a matter of seconds, surely video game developers can do the same in the years that it takes to develope a good game. I mean, it isn't like I can't enjoy a story with amnesia as a plot device. Lord knows, both Metal Gear Ac!d games had excellent stories to them, but it owuld be nice to see something different every once in a while. Break the mold people. Serious gamers do not want to play the same thing every year.

There is a good possibility of my doing multiple parts to this blog post, so look for them in the future. Until then, cya.
