@the4sakenone Kingdom Hearts plays like a simple action games with some very light RPG elements thrown in, like many genres do these days. Many true FF fans want a turn based or ATB styled turn based system where you control your whole party again and have it be an actual RPG like it was for the first 10, count'em 10, games.
@bksonic123 It's still perfectly decent though when it is relatively turn based and you control your party. I and many others do not want a Kingdom Hearts action game clone, especially for a numbered FF title.
@Hodax @keldarironfist That's just it. FF13 did not follow the classic formula, it was an automated experience. That being said, I do believe innovation on turn based mechanics are welcome. While I am not advocating it for FF, I thoroughly enjoyed the timing based attacks of shadow hearts which I thought had a fantastic system. I also think chrono cross's system was top notch as well.
@Hodax @keldarironfist No, but a core numbered FF should be, as it has proven to be the best formula for this particular series, especially in the numbered core canon games. Persona and Shin Megami show there is still a very viable market for these games, bravely default was warmly embraced because of it's return to traditional turn based JRPG mechanics.
The audience for that is definitely smaller now though because yes the audience has moved on to simpler and more action oriented fare. That could be for many reason, but I doubt any of them flattering :). Square is trying to play catch up with it's biggest brand in a genre that as become nichier because western tastes have really gown down the tubes. I totally understand why they are doing this, but it doesn't make it the best fit for this particular game. This should have stayed a spin off.
@Hodax @keldarironfist Which makes it all the more tragic that it isn't an improvement :). IF anyone think's FPS's have progressed, and it has done our industry a favor need only look at the stagnation we are in. Saying FPS's became better FPS's is not the same as saying RPG's are getting better by becoming another genre, a genre that is in vogue right now.
@Hodax Nothing breaks good game mechanics that are tried and true and well reviewed then a focus on visuals and making sure it keeps up with the latest trends of making everything action oriented :). Turn based works great. It is true that the younger generation of gamers want a more streamlined, simple, and more action oriented style of play in everything, and it's reflected in what you see today, and the games are worse for it :). Just because those are latest trends doesn't make them a good fit foir every game. It's perceived as outdated by some, it doesn't mean it actually is. If it were modern FF games would be reviewing a whole lot better.
