That is a scary thought. Just imagine an American Civil War with no boundries and today's technology. Instead of it being North vs, South it would be random states littered throughout the country.

I live in Pennsylvania. I'm about 3 hours from the Canadian border- French speaking humans are not strange to me. I also live around Amish people-see them everyday. -German and Dutch speaking is not unusual to me either. All my kid's cartoons have spanish speaking characters, but no French or Dutch speaking character is represented.

How come when i go to an A.T.M. machine, i am asked if I want my transaction in Spanish, then? (Yo hablo Espanol, tambien), Spain is across an ocean, and Mexico is thousand miles south. Why don't they let me have a transaction in French or German instead? Does that bother any yanks, French or Germans here?

I hear you "Mate". I was around back in the 70's when they tried to do the change over. Here's what our "Yank" mentality did wrong tho- Instead of just dumping the Imperial system altogether and saying "look. This is metric, it is global, it's all about 10, so use it now." they tried to wean us off the imperial system, and put BOTH measures on everything. Well, it never took as a result- everybody kept looking at the familiar Imperial system. Creatures of habit.

Subsequently we end up having both measures 30 years later. STILL. So we screwed up, I suppose. I can see other nations are peeved, but I don't get why other nations require us to change the measures for them. Plus, I have to wonder how much money we've wasted printing both systems on everything in 30 years!

Bad enough I have to "Press 1 for English" at all my continental ATMs, as it is.(Spanish is the only other choice, but I live in Pennsylvania. DeJaVu?)

That is what I mean-especially with Vista. heard so many Vista owners hate on the OS, that I don't want it. I used to run a PC with Win98SE, I finally got all the bugs out and felt like a king or something for awhile. but when it took The Big Dirt Nap, there was no way to get another familiar 98SE- ONLY WinXP or Vista- 2 OS I'd have to re-learn all over again, also costing me more to get.

Are we always going to have to answer to only Microsoft or even Apple?

Family PC owner, budget to consider. Had to buy a Malwart-on-special PC, complete with pre-installed demo progs and spam. Would love to be able to afford a custom rig, but we only find the stuff that Mikesoft and Upple offer us. I am avoiding trademark legalities there. Even the sick rigs we've seen have all that pre-installled junk for company profit included.

In a world where all humans are expected to own a PC by now, are we being given much purchasing power, or only what PC companies allow us to buy?

My internet speed is so slow that I had to wait 10 minutes just to dload the speed test prog, and another 3 to let it load/scan!!!! So I stopped it altogether.

If everyone is going broadband / high speed / optical, etc. for internet, then dialup will no longer be an option. Which also means the price for internet connectivity is going to be fixed on those speedier options. My family budget is going to keep us from using the internet when dialup modems are no longer available.

Point is- while many here are sad about how slow they connect- at least you can afford to BE slow, yet still faster than me. BTW- that speed test had spam and spyware inside it- anoither reason our PCs end up going pokey. They can now load junk into the system FAST and do it 24 / 7 with a 'constant high speed connection' THEN have the nerve to tell us "oh gee-you're going slow-but we can help with this -$$$"

But this is another topic thread I will post..
