The hd4850 is 9.25" and the hd4870 is 9.5". Open your case and see if it will fit.

Your cpu is bottlenecking, but still you should have good framerates on all high at that resolution (I think you meant 1280x1024). The hd4850 handles Crysis' high settings very well.

I get 44 fps on all high no AA at 1280x1024 with E6850 + HD4850 (Catalyst AI disabled): Link 1

48 fps with Catalyst AI set to advanced: Link 2

Take a quick look at this article that compares the P45 and X48 in Crossfire, and judge for yourself if the X48 is worth the extra costs.

Yes all the parts are compatible.

Heat issues ? Not with the Antec 900. I have the Antec 300 and my hd4850 idles at 47-48C with 40% fan speed, and under full load with Crysis never above 70C with 55% fan speed, and never above 65C with 60%. Crysis is the game that stresses my hd4850 the most, with Mass Effect my load temps are 5-10C lower than with Crysis.

At 1440x900, the hd4850 is all you need. Best bang for the buck card, and the hd4870 is overkill for that resolution.

Performance: 8.5
Price/Performance: 9.5

HD4850 is almost equal to 8800GTX Ultra... see this...

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-4850,1957-25.html

Aldouz

Look at the drivers they used for the hd4850... 8.22 beta.

hd4850 is faster than 8800gtx, and ultra isn't much faster than gtx.

At what resolution you're playing and at what settings (high, very high, AA) ?

I'm sure it's your cpu that's bottlenecking.

Sorry for being a noob, but at 40% what temp does it get to at load, if you know. And do you have to load the profile each time you boot up the pc?digitalman42

I haven't tried 40% at load, but at 55% speed i get around 65C when playing Crysis and a little less for Mass Effect. At 55% it's a little loud but not unbearable, just slightly louder than my previous card. At 60% that's where it starts to be annoyingly loud imo, but if you game with headphones then it shouldn't be a problem. And I've not tried higher than 60% because load temps have not been alarming.

And when Windows starts, CCC loads the last profile that was used, so i don't have to activate a profile. There's always the smart doctor software that comes with the Asus hd4850/70 if you don't want to do the fan fix.
