The best value is probably the 4870 or the 9800 GTX+. I prefer ATI/AMD since Nvidia has been monopolizing games lately with that annoying "The Way It's Meant to be Played" and PhyX and I don't like their business practices.
This is just plain horrible design. They basically took the 9800 and slapped on more transistors. There's no innovation and change in architecture for improved efficiency. They didn't even bother to add dx 10.1, upgrade to DDR5, or switch to 55 nm. Nvidia is starting to become lazy and sloppy with its technology. This seems more like a rush job from Nvidia to push its next gen card out the door before AMD. Hopefully, ATI/AMD has come up with a better approach to designing gpu. Some people who think that you don't need a high end gpu need to be reminded of games like Crysis, Far Cry 2, Alone in the Dark, Alan Wake, Project Offset, Project Origin, Doom 4, and Unreal 4 engine games which will push hardware further or you can play the diluted version on the consoles.
This is somewhat of a disappointment for me. This reminds me of the old Soviet Union way of engineering of adding more bulk. There's hardly any innovation in efficiency or technological advancement. All they basically did was add more transistors to an old card. They didn't even bother to add directx 10.1 which is much more efficient and a better API than the old dx10. I really hope game developers don't stop supporting dx10.1 just because Nvidia doesn't support it like what happened with Assassin's Creed. I hope ATI/AMD comes up with a better architecture and better design.
I wonder how long it'll be before these massive gpu just come with their own power cord instead of getting it from the motherboard like the monitor does. If they continue making them bigger it'll be even bigger than the motherboard.
Will probably wait for the next generation gpu from both companies next year, although the radeon 3870 is definitely a bargain and will play most games with all the bells & whistles, but for $20-30 more the 8800 gt kicks butt. Hard to decide.
Gacmyver, most people like me want Ep 2, Team Fortress, & Portal which would have been in the black box for $39. But now if I buy them separately I'd have to pay $60 so like most people I'm forced to buy the orange box. Does that make sense now? To the people who gave me a negative score for the previous comment, go F yourself loser fanboy. Wish they would add a feature where you can actually see who rates comments then people would be less inclined to abuse it..
