@jhcho2: Yes western games had more depth in terms of gameplay in the past but that is not true nowadays if you consider that games like Mass effect, Uncharted, Gears of war or Call of Duty dominated the western market since the 360 era. Those games could not be more shallow or simplistic even if they tried. Also saying that Japanese games are the same as 15 years ago is absolutely ridiculous. The only kind of games that are really lazy, repetitive and un-innovative are these "cinematic" shooters that the west keeps releasing.
There will always be games that ditch depth in favour of a more action oriented approach. Nevertheless, you can't deny that Mass effect, Uncharted, Gears of war and Call of Duty are games with huge development budgets and high production values, far above most Japanese games. So even if they weren't deeper, they sure look and play better than most Japanese games, and contribute to the stark contrast between the two.
The thing is that it was those kind of games why western games gained so much popularity. Do they look better from a graphical stand point then most japanese games ? Sure. But do they actually play better? The answer to that is no. That goes specially to those cover based third person shooters that are basically whack a mole mini games.
