@jonny_chaos: I am very curious to see if the addition of this mode actually boosts sales any of these games. Part of what makes Fortnite so popular is that it's a quality game for free. For a free game it plays well and looks good (the clean, colorful, cartoony aesthetic works well).

But when it comes to the likes of Battlefield and COD I'm just not sure new players are going to be jumping on board just because of a Battle Royale mode. Are gamers that don't typically buy these games suddenly going to pay $60 just because of the addition of a Battle Royale mode? Especially when they could get Fortnite for free or PUBG for a fraction of the price.

@merwanor: The appeal is how fast paced these modes are. You jump right in and play. Once you die you just go on to the next match. No waiting to respawn. No getting downed and waiting for teammates to help you up. No dying and having to wait for the match to end.

I'm not into the mode either, I'm not much of an online gaming person in general, but I can see why the mode has become so popular, especially with Fortnite. Free game that can be played on nearly any device with the quick and addicting gameplay loop.

@corinthas: hahaha Spot on. There's no mystery to it. Two of the most popular games in the world are built around the Battle Royale concept and everyone is going to follow suit. Any online multiplayer shooter not incorporating this mode into their game is missing the boat.

Already pointed out by others but I'm surprised this article doesn't mention that the game is multiplatform (unless I read right over that part). Kind of weird that Sony would use this as one of their pre-E3 announcements.

@asnakeneverdies: well, at least we live in a time where both horror and survival games seem to be a bit more popular. They might not all be quality experiences but it seems like developers do have an interest in making these type of games.

@gustavob: I guess when I think about it it makes sense. If there was one game I was really looking forward to I'd probably put every other game on hold until I got my fix. But with that said, if there were two or more games coming out around the same time that I was highly anticipating I wouldn't hesitate to buy both.

@Xristophoros: I'm completely with you, though I was thinking 8s at best. I just think there is the small possibility of the game being a surprise hit.

My real prediciton is that the game will end up being a bit of a cult favorite, kind of like Mad Max from a few years ago. As long as the game is a solid open world game with the standard features you would expect from such a game it will generate a decent fanbase.

@videogameninja: release date is right around the same time Horizon dropped so maybe they're hoping for similar results. Horizon would have been viewed as a great game regardless of when it released but i think releasing at a usually quiet time for gaming helped as well. It caught people a little off guard and was in the spotlight once reviews came out praising the quality of the game. Perhaps Days Gone can, somewhat, replicate those results. People are already sleeping on the game a bit and are cautiously optimistic at best. If it release to glowing reviews it could turn into a surprise hit.

@Bread_or_Decide: good point. If GTA V online was viewed a poorly as Battlefront 2 then there would be a reason to be worried and concerned but I haven't heard many complaints about GTA V's microtransactions.

@edussz: I was thinking earlier, I don't get why the release of one highly anticipated and potentially great game means other games in the fall will suffer. Is Red Dead 2 going to be the only game people buy and play this fall? I get not releasing the same exact day or month but releasing a game a month earlier or a month or 2 later should be plenty of time to avoid the hype surrounding Red Dead 2.
