In my opinion it was too soon to redesign the form of the current soon to be phase out PS3. The original PS2 took 4 years and the PS3 have not been in the market for at least 3 years. I understand that by redesigning it, promoting it more and by lowering the price more consoles will be sold and more and better games will arrive, i know this is good and all but come on why change the PLAYSTATION 3 logo to PS3 even the colored P in the front, now the the system start you see a different logo and by looking at the picture of the new Japanese gundam slim bundle you can tell that the are going to redesign even game boxes. Maybe they are even going to change the logo that appears before staring to play each game.

Japanese Gundam Bundle

Again in my opinion it was too soon, everyone with one of the current PS3's without BC will feel sooner or later like that they have a old and less modern model, the PS2 Slim arrived after more than 60 millions consoles were sold, only like 24 millions of gamers have the current model. The worse part is that it will arrive like two weeks after the announcement it may even take less time to arrive in stores and if we try to sell it people will think the console is inferior and want it almost free like trash the same for GameStop which will now give like $100.00 in trade-in.

I would only advise you to open the unit if it is not in warrenty. You can find the detailed instructions online. Also the correct method to apply the thermal compound is slightly different than you would with a CPU or GPU. The heatsink surface is not completely smooth. There are a couple of people on Youtube that has applied the thermal compound in the same fashion ( spreading it with their fingers ) as they would with any CPU or GPU and has caused the fans to speed up and overheat. I would advise against this method because of the surface finish of the heatsink. Since the surface is not perfect it will cause air pockets and or uneven contact. The way I did it was pretty simple. I applied the thermal compound in a square shape (square has to be filled in with compound) one third the size of the CPU and GPU. When the heatsinks are installed it will spread more uniform and eliminate any air pockets on the chips. I believe the cheap thermal compound is the main culprit behind the YLOD and the RROD. And believe me if your PS3 is older than a year and has gotten louder.....Thermal compound. The compound on my unit was like old Playdough when I opened it up..rgarced76
Can you tell me were can i go online to learn how to applied the compound?

You can use compressed air. This will not damage the sealed BR drive. The PS3 internally gets full of dust particles and a vacuum will not remove this. The reason the PS3 gets louder as it ages has to do more with the cheap thermal compound drying up and the upside down heatsink design. rgarced76
If i open it how can i notice if the thermal compound need to be changed.

Sony should've made dust filters.

If you are going to add that many fans on the system, at least add dust filters so we can clean it easily.

Yeah Sony should've made dust filters. From what i have saw the Slim doesn't have them too and it doesn't even have ventilation holes in the right side. Can they be quieter without problems? Thats one big problem cause i can imagine myself changing it for a Slim and regretting it later.

My PS3 started getting loud about a 1 yr into it's life.... about 9 or 10 months later, I got YLOD....... I really took care of it though... I'm on my 2nd PS3..... Macri
You're not the only one that's on a second PS3 i am on my second. The second one cost me like a repair only $150.00, it was brand new.

[QUOTE="infamous_27"]"What can i do?" Buy a Slim. But seriously, my fan is pretty loud too. At first when I turn my PS3 on it's quiet. Than one hour later, the fan is LOUD.

Mine becomes loud in less than an hour. I've already spent $150.00 changing my console last year and trading it on GameStop will be a ripoff cause i will need like an extra $200.00 to change it. I wish they were giving a offer were you could only pay like $50.00 to change it.

Mine recently got the ylod and it was a 60GB launch model, took really good care of it and it went. I think the dust would be a factor to ur problem, try cleaning it.

Ibzu

Can this be solved by opening the system and cleaning the Fan .

I have noticed this but don't know what to do. It's not drastically loud but is somewhat annoying specially when playing at night or a part in a games that doesn't have background music. It's not overheating but would like to know what can i do and the vents aren't blocked by dust.

2005 psp 1000 black ,

2006 psp slim white only

mid 2006 new slim colors

2007 more colors and bundles and psp 3000

2008 more 3000 colors and bundles

2009 -psp go more 3000 bundles

mariokart64fan
I forgot that. I think they shouldn't redesign a system year after year specially a console. I think it was too fast for Sony to redesign the PS3. Wow in less than three years.
