I think the lack of western RPGs killed this thing. Sony should have offered to partly subsidize BioWare early on to make Vita-specific ports of: Mass Effect, Jade Empire, and KOTR. And if 2K made a port for Borderlands 2, why not the BioShock trilogy? Too little, too late at this point, but if Sony made an effort early on to appeal to western markets, it might have turned out differently.
I'm curious to know how this is going to work. The only inputs the PS4 can use to connect the device are its USB 3.0 ports, which only have a max transfer rate of 625 Mbits/s. They'll need to develop some sophisticated compression protocols to communicate with the device. Keep in mind that the traditional output the PS4 uses right now is HDMI 1.4, which has a transfer rate of 10.2 Gbit/s.
The only way I see this working for something like VR is if the HDMI 1.4 on the PS4 outputs to the auxiliary processing unit, which then outputs as an HDMI 2.0 to the VR headset. If it goes that route, then Sony has given developers a means of producing games at 4k resolutions on conventional HDTVs as well - assuming of course the extra video memory and processing power is sufficient. That just might keep the PS4 relevant through 2019 with the mass proliferation of 4k HDTVs.
"new compelling experiences that leverage what smart devices do best."
Reggie, smart devices already do everything better than existing Nintendo hardware. If you really want to "leverage" smart devices, port your premium IP to the iOS so you can start making your company some money, instead of relying on plastic figurines to bring you back to profitability.
MS isn't going to wait another 4-5 years to release a new console - no way, no how. Expect a new system by holiday 2017, or 2018 at the latest. It probably won't be marketed as a successor because of the relative infancy of the XBONE right now - likely more of a second tier system (optimized for VR/AR and 4k playback). It would spare MS the indecency of abandoning the XBONE fan base because it would be marketed towards a different mode of gameplay, albeit fully backwards compatible with XBONE games (which would now be playable in 4k).
It was the worst idea EVER to abandon this game. It was literally on track to be GTA V in the Star Wars universe. I still cry myself to sleep at night thinking about it.
This is sadly the norm for the gamepad. Not just for 3rd party games, but Nintendo themselves dropped the ball on making the gamepad a "must have" feature for the Wii U. To date, I can only think of 4-5 titles that made innovative use of it.
