video games are more mainstream now. 16 years ago only us nerds played video games. they weren't socially acceptable back then.

best selling in franchise....no shit. that's like comparing a success that more people buy/own cell phones, tv's, media devices... than 16 years ago...

or.... they could produce games within reasonable budgets... so that they could still make huge profits with faaaar fewer sales. god forbid they stop blowing millions of marketing dollars on each shit sequel, just to get people on the hook with pre-orders, for games that have very little soul in them.

this annualization of games worked in history for ea sports games because you expect a new sports game each year with updated rosters... but adapting that annual business model to every other game genre and franchise is what's ruining this industry.
