OEM items are just straight shipments to the supplier(ie newegg) they arent usually boxed, and they dont contain any extra items(such as sata cables for OEM HD's) I have never had a problem buying OEM items, they are just cheaper because the box costs you 20 dollars lol. Then obviously "retail" just means that its in a box, newegg probably bought it from a supplier, then sold to the comsumer.

almost all of neweggs barebone systems come with a motherboard, and some even with a CPU, and Ram.

yeah the cheapest fix is to pop some spare components you have into it, and narrow the problem down. I dont really think the GPU is the problem though, if anything I would say mobo problems

yeah they still make PSU's without PCI-e connectors and without sata power connectors, so they arent all the same.

These problems are very hard to pin down, it could be your mobo shorting out, it could be you GPU overheating(though this normally just freezes the system), a bad cpu(most likely cause for the screen shutting down, but fan still turning), or a bad PSU sending incorrect voltages.

Yeah make sure it will fit, but I dont know what your worring about... make sure it has sata power connectors if you have sata, make sure you have molex connectors, and make sure it has one or two 6 pin PCI-e power connectors. Almost all mobo's now are 24pin ATX, so you should be fine, but as said above, make sure it fits.

You wouldnt need an adapter unless it didnt come with a 6 pin PCI-e connector, which most do. I think it would be ok, however I think more is recommended if you ever sli.
