zelda450 Blog

For the fans of ALL generations of gaming...

Heidy ho neighbors!

Long time no blog, geez! There isn't a real reason for that I'm afraid. I've just been enjoying playing games alot, which is a decent excuse if I do say so myself. My collection has been building RAPIDLY since my last blog (in which I got a PS3) as those of you who are friends with me on XBL and have seen my bio recently would certainly know :P I figured that owning that many games presents me with lots of different options with what to do when I get bored. Lately I have been lacking the drive to play a game through completion, so I figured out something that pretty much forces me to play through a game: I started reviewing games. Me and a couple of buddies started up a wordpress blog, All-Bit Games, in which we review all types of game, from the newest block-busters, to Intellivision and Jaguar games. I hope that you look around the site, as I know that when I started out collecting games I was always looking to get some opinions on obscure/old games that nobody else seemed to write reviews about. I would just like to get some constructive feedback, as it always helps when you're just starting out something new like this.

Take care guys!

Also, sorry for such a long absence. I'm always around on the GS Legacy Platforms forum though.

So I got a PS3 today...

My name is MaypoMan, and I would be more than happy to play a game with you guys, so send me a friend request. Some local guy was selling his 80 GB with 2 Sixaxis controllers, 1 Dualshock, MLB 08 The Show, and Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds. It came in the box and was in like new condition, and I was able to talk him down to $450. Sweet. I was very lucky and am extremely grateful that I was able to get such a good deal on a nice PS3... :D

I also made my Giant Bomb profile, available here for your perusal :D

(On a side note to Wootex, I didn't want it to seem like I was ripping you off with the whole Maypo theme, but ever since I saw that avatar, I thought it was the most hilarious thing and knew that I would have to name all future accounts of mine after everybodys favorite maple flavored instant breakfast cereal mascot!)

Retro Revival Week: Day the fourth

Hmmm.... RRW day four.... dang, this is one of those early morning blogs, isn't it? No need to worry, though, I promise to keep this blog concise, to the point, and with no guest stars! Ok, so, what did I play yesterday? Well, not much really, it was a pretty busy day for me, but I did manage to squeeze in a few games:

Adventure Island (NES) I was only able to play this for about five minutes, but it made some good first impressions on me. It seemed like a cool platformer with plenty of different weapons and items to mix up the standard platforming action.

Baseball Stars (NES) In my opinion, this is the second best NES baseball game (Right behind good old Baseball Simulator 1.000, of course)

Super RBI Baseball (SNES) I popped this in for a few seconds, couldn't hit the ball once in two innings, got frustrated, and turned it off.

The Lawnmower Man (SNES) I got this in the mail, played through the first level, but quit early due to the extreme feelings of disappointment when I discovered that my character was all man, but no lawnmower :(

Crash Bandicoot (PS) This was my first time playing the CB series, and I had a very good time with the original CB yesterday. It's the game I sunk the most time into, and I liked the mix of 2D and 3D platforming. It's a very fun game, and I look forward to playing more of this today.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also broke down and bought Civilization Revolution for the 360 yesterday, because I downloaded the demo and played the crap out of that, and I really enjoyed it. So I popped it in at about 8 last night, and finally finished my first match at about 12:30. But man, did I love every second of it. The reason it took so long is that I couldn't find the Chinese, who were on an isolated island to the south of me. When I finally did find them with one of my Cruisers, they had almost no technology, and my riflemen and Cruisers were easily able to take out there wooden shanties and tribal warriors. I can't play many games for 4 hours straight, but I was surprised that Civ Rev kept me interested (not to mention awake) for that long a time. Definitely a great game, especially if you consider that it's on 360.

Anyways, thanks for reading, thoughts, musings, and compliments (:D ) always welcome below.

Lots of new games, and RRW day three

Yo yo yo, my Gamespot peeps. It's your pal Jeff here with more RRW updates, which is essentally going to turn into me telling you about the amazing deal I got yesterday. Sit back, relax, and let your imagination run wild as we relive my tale (I prefer if your imagination were to keep me fully clothed, but I suppose that's really up to you)

(As an interesting side note, I just took a short break from writing this to go help fix the stove (which I of course accidentally broke) I wasn't very successfull, as I super glued my hand to surface of the oven five, yeah FIVE times, and it feels very odd to be tying this now as there is some type of odd grease or gunk or something that is now superglued to my right index finger... :( )

Now if that wasn't an interesting side story, i don't know what is. Anyways, here's what I got yesterday:

1 NES (no hookups or controllers)

1 SNES (1 controller, and a power supply)

Star Wars Jedi Arena

Star Wars Return of the Jedi Death Star Battle

Retro Revival Week: Day the first

Well, I managed to stay true to my word and play nothing but retro games all day long yesterday (except for literally about 20 seconds of BF Bad company, I just tried it out until I tried, which was, again, about 20 seconds :( )

So here's what I played yesterday:

Five crappy Atari games not even worth mentioning

Five crappy NES games not even worth mentioning

Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout (NES) Surprisingly enough, this was a pretty decent platformer, until I faced off against Daffy Duck, who apparently is invincible

Gunstar Heroes (GEN) Beat the first two levels (For your information, Mo, I went back and beat the first two levels on my own. Second boss only took me about 20+ tries. Stupid crab

Splatterhouse 3 (GEN) Beat the first level, almost beat the second, but got brutally destroyed by a duo of guys who shot fists out of their mouth. :)

I decided to remove Bonk's Adventure from my playlist, my brother is being an irrational Turbo Grafx hog (that poopyhead!) and he wants to beat that game this week, so I figured I'd let him. The game I replaced it with, is

Mike Tyson's Punchout (NES) I figured this would boost my extreme factor if I could beat it, so I stayed up til 1 last night trying to do just that. Unfortunately for me, Bald Bull apparently has the hots for me, and I can't beat him for some reason, even though he's so terribly easy. Oh well, you get better at that game with practice and memorization, so...

Well, that was all for day one. Today....probably more Punch Out...

The Retro Revival Week gameplan

Lolz... game plan.... c wat idid thar??????

Ok, so... RRW. Even though I've been pretty much playing retro games exclusively for the past 3 or for months, I figured I'd participate, as I hope it will give me the motivation needed to actually knock some of the games off of my Pile O' Crappy Games I Need to Beat, and maybe even get me to write blogs more regularly

I present to you, loyal readers of my blog of semi-dubious quality, games that I WILL beat in the next week: (No images because GS hates me)

Splatterhouse 3 (Genesis)

Bonk's Adventure (Good excuse to give the new TG16 a spin)

Gunstar Heroes (Genesis)

Ok, a nice, short list of games, 1 week devoted to them, I'm pretty sure I can beat them (Sweet Jesus I hope so) Of course I'll boot up Mutant League Hockey from time to time, because that is a seriously fun and over the top game, and would probably be one of the most hilariously fun games of all time if it twern't for the sputtering frame rate.

I'll be at albedos_shadows house tomorrow, where we will take a look at an often overlooked side of RRW, and play through some of the worst games ever created by human hands (it's the internet, they could be robots, though ;) )We might make a video, WHO KNOWS?!!?!?!?

Pop Tarts: ARE they more delicious than Dippin' Dots?

After reading everybody's favorite pal Wootex's new blog, I was struck with profound anger. Now for those of you who were to lazy to click-y on the link-y, (also for those who hold a vandetta against Wootex, which is much more understandable and forgiveable), let me sum things up for you: Wootex basically rambles on about the values found within Dippin Dotz. After a long and boring history session on the Dots, he continues to dribble on about their contribution to modern science, even going as far as to call them delicious (ok, ok, I totally agree, they're great)

Now the problem that I have with this is that no praise or even mention of the incredible edible Hot Fudge Sundae Poptart is given within the confines of this so called "blog."

I mean come on, look at these bad boyz (spelled with a z for added raditude)

(Ok, I'm not able to upload an image, so hear goes my best rendition:

/--/

Ok, do me a favor and pretend that's a box with delicious looking Pop Tarts on it.

Now we can pick out a few things off of this picture. Number the first: They look delicious. Number 2: They come in packs of 8. Number 3: I just now noticed that the word sundae is spelled really weirdly.

Now, I'm not ready to back this statement with my life, but I'm willing to bet that NONE of those three points can be deduced from the packaging of Dippin' Dots. None. And finally, for Poptarts death blow, apparently Tarts of the Sundae variety can be frozen, YES THAT"S RIGHT YOU HEARD ME FROZEN, which pretty much makes them equal to their frozen yet inferior brethren, Dippin Dots.

Also because Wootex did it and I thought it was funny so I'll just blatantly rip him off, here's how these bad boys were concieved at good ol' Tart HQ:

"Tell me son, what's your favorite thing in the world to eat for breakfast?"

"Well mistah, my mommy makes me pancakes and sau-..."

"WRONG SONNY BOY WRONG! YOU LIKE ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST, DON'T YA SON?"

"Bu-bu-but mistah, I-I-..."

"DON'T CRY, YOU LITTLE (puts on friendly voice) Here kiddo, have a bite of this delicious Ice Cream Sunday Poptart!

"Mmmmm, you the best mistah Tawt Pwesident!"

See, now isn't that a nice happy ending? And remember folks, you too can have happy ending to all of life's conflicts with overly forceful men, with the new Hot Fudge Sundae PopTart brand toaster pastry.

Thank you and good night.

So...you guys like free games?

Well who doesn't? Especially when said free games are incredibly amazing. Download Tumiki Fighters here (now with 100% more legality!) and see for yourself. Think R-Type meets Katamari Damacy. If you dig that, make sure you pick up Blast Works for the Wii, which is based on Tumiki Fighters. I just got BW yesterday, and put in a couple of hours this morning. Definitely a very fun yet challenging game. It also has one of the best level and ship creators I've ever seen. I made an angry flying turtle that shoots bullets out of the fez that it's wearing. You can also download a bunch of levels and ships directly onto your Wii from the games website, something that I was definitely surprised to see in a Wii game. I also got one of the greatest retro gaming deals of my career (from a seedy neighborhood in Detroit, no less!) off of Craigslist, look for me to reveal that in a future blog.

Well, enjoy the free game, I would seriously recommend trying it out, it even managed to singlehandedly change my opinion on the space shooter genre.

Dirt McGert, panhandler extraordinaire

Hey, whats happening fellow peeps of the Spot? It's been a while, hasn't it? Well I have no good excuses as to why I haven't blogged lately (I have plenty poor excuses, though) other than lack of motivation. That and I've been busy trying to whittle down a 200 game backlog of unbeaten games. So although I hate these type of blogs, I'll just be writing about whats been happening lately, what I've been playing, and p'raps a few impressions of some new purchases.

Ok, well get the obligatory retro gaming junk out of the way first. Ever since I got my 360 back ('twas about two weeks ago), the retro gaming has seen a slight dwindlance (that's right, dwindlance), although I've still been trying to beat most of the games. One game in particular that I have been playing like crazy though is Caveman Games for the good ol' NES. It's basically Olympic Games, but featuring hairy guys with funnier names (ahh, good ol' Thag the caveman). One of the highlights of this game though is the mate toss, where your choice of cavemen spin a woman around and then try to throw her as far as possible. I don't know how Nintendo quality control let out a game featuring spousal abuse, but they did, and we're all better off because of it.

Other than that, I've been playing a ton of NHL 94. I pretty much played this game exclusively for the two months my 360 was broken, and I still haven't gotten tired of it. In fact, I think it may be one of my favorite games of all time. Yes, it's really that good. Like NFL 2K5 good. Even if you don't own a Genesis or SNES, you can still play it on NHL 2006 for the PS2. So go get this game. Or I won't love you. And you don't want me to not love you, do you?

Ok, now on to some current gen gaming. Well, as I've said about three times already (just repeating for the reading comprehension challenged among us :P ) my 360s back, and I've been doing some serious gaming on that bad boy. I got GTAIV, and to my surprise, I think it's great. I didn't really like any of the other entries at all, but I was really surprised by IV. Everything from the driving to the characters, and especially the city itself, is much more realistic and believable, and I really like what the story is trying to get across. So yeah, I was really surprised by this game. Other than that, I rebought DiRT and Shadowrun. I finally beat DiRT and am starting to get back into SR multiplayer, and both games seem to be even more fun than I remember them being. If you see me online and want to play anygame multiplayer, give me an invite, and as long as it isn't my brother playing, I'll join with you. It's been a loooong time since I played any multiplayer with you guys.

I also finally started Eternal Darkness for the Gamecube, and man is that game good. The storyline is incredible, the combat is good, and the creepy atmosphere is one of the best I've seen in a game. Definitley woth your time if you can find it, as it's not too common, but it's not too expensive either.

Yesterday was a Fatman Monday, which is what albedos_shadow and I (oh yeah, and that weird JJ guy from all of our video blogs and music videos) call our gaming get togethers. Yesterday, we decided to go through all my games and pull out all the ones that I've never even played, and play a little bit of each. Some were amazingly good (Oddworld Strangers Wrath, Deus Ex), some were amazingly terrible (Atomic Runner, Cabelas Deer Hunt) and some... well, they defy description, mixing some nonsense about wind, dinosaurs, naked blue women, and pirates all into one game, all while keeping a straight face.

Well, I just felt like writing a blog today, so there you go. Since this was pretty bland, I'll leave you guys a question:

What's the most unintentionally bad/hilarious game you've ever played?
