Next Xbox in 2012, PS4 dev ramping up - Report

Edge sources say Ubisoft and EA have hands on target hardware for Microsoft's next console with a late 2012 launch in mind, Sony has shifted one studio's focus to the next generation.

It appears next-generation console rumors are coming to a consensus. Edge today reported that Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and other unspecified major developers are developing games for the successor to the Xbox 360 with a late 2012 launch expected.

One year left as Microsoft's top dog?
One year left as Microsoft's top dog?

According to the site, Ubisoft Montreal and "certain EA studios" are working on games with Microsoft-provided "target boxes" that use off-the-shelf computer parts matching the planned specifications for the company's next console. The first legitimate devkits for the system are expected to be provided to developers by the end of this year. The given late-2012 release window lines up with rumors from last week that pegged the next Xbox as launching in the holiday season next year.

Edge also provided a corroborating take for another next-generation rumor that had been floating around, this one about Sony's next PlayStation. Last month, rumors circulated that Sony had begun work on PlayStation 4 games--a notion backed up by Edge's report that "one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development" to work on the next console from the electronics giant.

@GTA-Like_Fan I would be very surprised if it didn't come out with Blue Ray capabilities considering that was the media that won against HD-DVD. Why would that be so funny? It's not as if it wasn't made clear that M$ lost by backing HD-DVD. Your "LMAO" should've happend a couple years ago...>_>

I think we have a min of 2 years before a new Playstation and atleast a year or two until its affordable and or worth buying. Beside Rockstar's making both GTA V and Agent on the PS3 I dont think they would do that if there was a new PlayStation coming next year. I wonder what MS will do for their disc issues tho.If the new Xbox comes with Blue Rays I'll LMAO

Comparing recent AAA titles, it's looking increasingly clear that the devs are struggling to get anything more out of the current range of consoles. OK, PS3 could probably push a bit more, but the importance of cross platform sales has been like a pair of XBOX shaped lead boots for Sony. Compare all 3 Modern Warfare titles. What has significantly changed across the titles? Nothing that I can see other than different maps and weapons. The untrained eye couldn't tell one from the other. So maybe if we trully want more from console gaming, we need to start looking forward to the next generation. I'd usually hold off until a significant price drop, but if, as I suspect, GTA5 is going to be a launch title, then I'm saving up now. ...and I think Sony/MS/Nintendo know this.

@Ravenlore_basic that is because most games that come out for PC arnt fully utilizing PC hardwares potential. Since the games are made for console as well the dev's really dont spend time focusing on PC graphics. Current video cards support DX11 but how many games fully have DX11 support? Very few and of those few, they dont fully use the power of DX11 graphics. Go look up the Unreal 3 engine using DX11 support...Now if the new consoles use DX11 instead of 9 or 10 (and they would be stupid not to) expect games to look like what you see in that unreal 3 engine demo. If you dont think there was much difference between ps2 and ps3, you must be blind...game worlds became so much larger and more detailed and packed full of more content.

The new Xbox should have come out last year. It's good we don't have to wait until 2015 for new hardware, though.

My guess is that the Sony developer is Santa Monica Studios. Naughty Dog is going to continue support for Uncharted 3 for a while yet.

... I can understand MS releasing a new console as they make $$$$ money $$$$ from LIVE. For Sony I was sure they would wait longer as they pored lots of money into PS3 and have not gotten a lot back for it. ... I was sure they would have the next gen HD Blueray conected with it with higher def output. Something close to 4K by 2015/2016. To me the graphics will be somewhat better as I have seen games on High end PC with settings on high. YES its looks better but does not blow everything out of the water. Its not like comparing 2D to 3D games. or early 3D games to todays games!! ... ... ... ... ... _ _ - _ - - _ - - _ - After playing games from last gen to this gen the games ARE better but not by much; I think the same will happen next gen. small differences, but not that NEXT GEN. difference we saw with the jump from 2D to 3D.

@Nenad-ShoneX PC gamers who have hardware that is being wasted on games being developed for ancient graphics hardware. It'd be nice if console games could utilize DX11, DX9 is extremely outdated.

@dragonrift sorry. this is the first gen in 25 years that i had to get something besides a PC and Nintendo. why, becasue Wii was so underpowered it missed tons of great games. am i a nintendo fan? yea. i am a video game fan though. i play anything and everything no matter system or dev. as long as it is a good game. Wii has a great library, but it is lacking lots of games. previous nintendo systems didnt have this issue. Wii U is nintendo learning from its mistake. besides, when my wife kicks me off the tv to watch some crappy show, i can still play my games on the controller. atleast im in denial about anything. to many people think that mario is too kiddie, and they can tell me that all day while they are playing COD on their xbox thinking they are hardcore.

I agree, mrbgibs. If something that's just released needs a whole slew of updates to function properly, then something is wrong. It's been happening frequently this generation with a number of high profile titles. I'm tired of people telling me "there's a patch" when I bring up a technical problem with these games--it should never have been there in the first place. If mediocre titles can get it right, right out of the gate, then why can't the heavy-hitters do the same? We don't need better graphics, we need more polished games. Get rid of all the freezing, the frame-rate drops, and the bugs before you try to sell me on a "better looking" game. I'd much prefer a game that runs without a hitch. PCs may indeed be leagues ahead of consoles, but the console has larger share of the market largely because of convenience. My PS3 may not be able to produce games as technologically impressive as a DX11 PC, but when I buy a PS3 game, I know it will work on ANY PS3. And 8 years for now, if they are still making new PS3 games, I know I can pick one up and play it on my "old" PS3. Developers don't have to worry about a ton of different hardware configurations to account for, and I don't have to worry about drop any addition cash to bring my hardware up to snuff.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I don't expect to see the next XBOX until 2013. If any system needs an upgrade (besides Nintendo) it's Microsoft. The system has hit it's technological wall so to speak. That said, I still don't expect to see it coming out next year. I expect them to announce it at E3 next year with a 2013 release date. Release launches will probably look something like: holiday season 2012 - Wii U, holiday season 2013 - XBOX Next (720, whatever they call it), sometime in 2014 for the PS4.

I'm excited to find out what the specs will be for both consoles... I wonder how more they can improve on this gen console technology... But it doesn't matter what it is I probably might wait like a year or two later to purchase mine like I did before... Wait and see how it rolls out.. More games.. Cheaper price.. Any defects, problems (RROD)..newer models, improvements (slim) and also this gen ain't quite done yet...but if something else urges me to get it at launch I might get it... BUT.. GTA5 first.. Yes sir.

Until they can use the full potential of the systems that are out now, there is absolutely no need for a new system. When the studios have the ability to go beyond what they are able to do now, that is when we need new systems.

Resolution is maxed out until 4k tv sets (which is several years off) so they'll want to get another cheeky generation in before that becomes the next big thing in less than a decade. Still lots they can do on graphics apart from resolution but I'm really looking forward to much better npc animation, interaction and ai as that will have a much bigger impact on user experience than just graphics. Current gen consoles just can't hack doing that stuff as well as it could be done - even in AC:R, townspeople are still walk round and round on set paths and are little more than obstacles most of the time.

People forget that Xbox 360 came out in 2005. I got mine in 2005 so for me it's been a while but I know people have only got their Xbox in the last 2 years so they would think this is all to soon however, for us who have had our consoles for 6+ years, I wouldn't mind a new one and I am very happy with my 360s..

Compare the 360 and PS3 graphics to those on any decent computer now---you can't, computers are so far ahead now on every field. If you are in a bad financial situation, that's understandable, you can wait a couple years (games will still be released for the old systems), but for people who have the money~~~~if you're a serious gamer you have to be willing to pay more for a better experience. The current systems have been out for a while and there's no reason innovation should be held back at this point. No one's forcing you to buy into the next gen either, but if you do, it'll last you through a whole phase of your life. I will be looking at the Microsoft and Sony options, but the Wii U is Nintendo's delayed bump up to the current generation.

This won't happen next year nor after it. Now gen consoles were made to last for 10 years and its not over yet, far from it. Not to mention kinect is still new. So if we look at what microsoft is doing than we can be safe that the next gens still have some time till they come out. They are being developed and must be close to theire final states, but the generation shift won't happen this soon, so chill ppl. Also, sure, some studios are switching 1-2 projects to this new gens cuz they need time to develop these games, this dose not mean that they will come out in the next 2 years. Overall, this article is retarded, nonsense. And if you don't like what I wrote, well, it proves that you have less brain than a subcreature. :-)

@killered3 Man...your first reason has a flaw to it. If you download a game on PSN or Live, that game is yours forever. I mean...I don't know what could happen to the game if you download it if there is some texture issues or some bugs, a patch will fix that right up...but when ever you delete a game off of your 360 or PS3 or if you reformat it, you can re download the game for free. and if you don't want to risk buying a game you may not like, just download the demo and try it out.

I'm not too crazy about the new, less improved Xbox. Buying Xbox games through LIVE is a bad idea and I'll tell you why.... (1) Buy a download and you buy it at your own risk. Something happens to it, you're screwed. (2) NO REFUNDS! (3) Have to pay to play online! If they fix this, everything would be fine and Microsoft could finally compete with Sony.

Games aren't at their top yet, why throw away two great consoles and rush a launch, I understand that microsoft is eager for money and a lot of people would buy it, but it's an outrage for a console with only 5 years to disappear, beacause we all know that microsoft doesn't care for their last season consoles and players.

Yes too early for the next generation consoles. We see that games like Skyrim are still possible on current gen then why are we moving to the next gen already? It doesn't seem like PS3 or the X360 are out of their life yet, or they have been juiced up completely in the recent games.

PC's are a little higher than a console but, you still can't compare the two...You spend $299-$399 on a brand new console on the same day...you get some with bugs and a small collection of games with backward compatibly to play "Old Games"...so basically you get a console to play good games online! I spend $299-$399 building a brand new console I get the same if not more power and speed, an operating system that not "embedded" I can mod my system and not get banned...more HDD space, cheaper games, and the ability to expand my system at a cheap price when I want to!

Its not Next Gen...its old tech and bad customers! processors are more powerful and much cheaper the problem is innovation and good coding! Truth is MS and Sony want to play with new tech, which they do all the time...now their ready to put it in a console and sell it...nothing wrong with that! My problem is that they get a great deal on their hardware and they don't pass on the savings! We still get nickel and dimed for the console, controllers, add-on devices, online, dlc, $60 games and frankly MS, Sony, Ninetndo, etc... are not broke...If these consoles cost more than $299 and i'm being business friendly when I say that but $249 should be going rate if not $200 even!

@naci ok to answer yes they are, far more powerful to emulate the ps3, however people can only do a rough emulation of the api and coding as Sony will not release it to the public, just like the ps2 emulator, as the creators of pcsx2 have said that it cannot do a full emulation without the true source code from Sony,

@chimpdaddy, you totally dodged the question I was asking and missed the point I was trying to make. When a PC can emulate a PS3, then THAT'S when I think next gen is ready. Of course that is my opinion. Do you understand?
