Next Xbox in 2012, PS4 dev ramping up - Report

Edge sources say Ubisoft and EA have hands on target hardware for Microsoft's next console with a late 2012 launch in mind, Sony has shifted one studio's focus to the next generation.

It appears next-generation console rumors are coming to a consensus. Edge today reported that Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and other unspecified major developers are developing games for the successor to the Xbox 360 with a late 2012 launch expected.

One year left as Microsoft's top dog?
One year left as Microsoft's top dog?

According to the site, Ubisoft Montreal and "certain EA studios" are working on games with Microsoft-provided "target boxes" that use off-the-shelf computer parts matching the planned specifications for the company's next console. The first legitimate devkits for the system are expected to be provided to developers by the end of this year. The given late-2012 release window lines up with rumors from last week that pegged the next Xbox as launching in the holiday season next year.

Edge also provided a corroborating take for another next-generation rumor that had been floating around, this one about Sony's next PlayStation. Last month, rumors circulated that Sony had begun work on PlayStation 4 games--a notion backed up by Edge's report that "one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development" to work on the next console from the electronics giant.

I don't see the problem here, if you want to keep playing your current console, nobody is going to stop you and there will still be games made for it. The PS2 still has games being developed and up until a couple of years ago, many top titles were still being developed for the system (even during the first couple of years for the PS3 almost all top titles were released on both systems, though scaled down for the PS2). If you want to play on the new console, do so, if you can't afford to purchase one then keep playing your current console and enjoy it because it isn't going anywhere (well unless your system dies on you).

Listen people, for the last time... Just because the next Gen consoles are coming, doesn't mean that the current Gen is over. CLEARLY the life cycle of both will OVERLAP each other sending the PS3 into a 10 year life span. That being said, I think that buying these consoles when they come out will be a horrid mistake. Just because the simple fact that, well besides Gamespot giving every launch title for the next Xbox a 8.0 and above rating, the games will largely look like this gen and will ultimately use the same motion control scheme as this gen. So, the experience will not change a bunch. And you better believe that you will be spending around 800 bucks when these new systems come out. That being said, I'm buying the first PS4 that hits the shelves, lol.

@Aragorn_Narsil ok those are incredible games but don't for get about the uncharted series. this series up the ante in story telling, game design and game presentation across the board.

@Aragorn_Narsil Actualy I would say that the PS2 did most of what your speaking of. Not nearly as much innovation or risk taking in current console gaming. Even the PS one did a better job than the ps3 and 360.

I don't know about you guys but a late 2012 release sounds pretty unrealistic if you ask me. if official development kits haven't even been released how can any developer be expected to have a game ready by the launch date?

It seems so soon but by late 2012 it'll have been 7 years for the 360 and 6 (correct me if i'm wrong) years for the PS3. The life of the original Xbox and the PS2 didn't last that long before a new console was announced. I feel like it's to soon, but at the same time i feel like it's time for the next generation...weird feeling.

All i think is, how can they actually improve upon the experience? We're so close to real life graphics these days, that i just can't see what they can do. PC is already way ahead the current consoles, but what can they do besides the things the PC can do now. The Wii U is not of my interrest but it seem innovating with the whole controller thing

Well...the X-Box and PS3 had a good run I suppose...I'm just sad to see either of them go. They have set the rules for gaming in our generation. Revolutionary games of current Generation...wow...how do I even start? I'll give it a shot. 1. Gears of War. 2. Oblivion. 3. Killzone 2. 4. Metal Gear Solid 4. 5. Halo 3. 6. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. 7. Assassins Creed. 8. Battlefield 3. 9. Fight Night Round 3. 10. Halo Reach. These are the games that I believed shaped the formulas and graphical enhancements we've seen over the last six years...obviously not everyone will share my opinion. But it's just my view :)

Bring it on. The new consoles will largely remain the same gaming experience in the coming generation I think. The coming generation should focus mostly on horsepower to sustain longevity of the new console. As long as Microsoft and Sony implement all of our current generation content into the next one, then I will adopt day 1. Gamerscore/trophies, Live Arcade/PSN purchases need to carry over with no hiccups. These systems have bred alot of young gamers so I believe this is what we will see and what I hope for. Building upon and integrating what we gamers have come to love and identify with will be key. I am personally very, very excited to see what is in store for us!

@m2rg did you include a game on your list that is not out yet gta5? i doubt it wont be epic but till it comes out we will never know. also skyrim is better in every way than oblivion i thought that oblivion was missing a lot of options that made morrowind great. skyrim brought all this missing content back and expanded on them.

@SkamArtist I Totally agree. "Console upgrades" are made all at once, as you said. Yu can't buy spare parts for a console (it would be a "PC" indeed), and when the one you have gets old, you have to buy another one. Pay full price.

@ couly I agree, but the problem is with cost. In order for a console game to look as nice as it's PC counter-part, the console price would be over $1000. The majority of gamers will not pay that amount for a console. Can you imagine if the next gen consoles were advertised for $1500 at launch? Also, with a PC you can upgrade over time to build a gaming rig. So even though you may put in well over $1000 to build a gaming rig, it's typically done over a period of time, not all at once. The other issue is with how fast technology changes. It's impossible for a console to keep up with the changing technology. However as someone who builds PC's, it's easier (not cheaper) to buy a new card, or memory, etc.

@SkamArtist The reason why the PS3 was expensive back then is because the older models have Emotion Engine CPU (the same CPU inside the PS2 allowing the PS3 to have an almost perfect hardware based PS2 gaming emulation rather than the later PS3 models who have a terrible software based PS2 emulation, which was also removed in the newer update) Sony assumed that customers would buy PS2 for PS2 games and PS3 for PS3 games, so they decided to remove PS2 emulation on the PS3 to make the PS3 cheaper.

I think they could have waited till 2013 but probably WII U launch next year made them to release their next gen early, As if i remember correctly I heard that PS and XBOX were in negotiations that no developer will release their next gen till 2013 (Probably read it 2 years ago) We won't have end of support till a year or two on 360 and many publishers will release toned down version for last gen as the install base of next gen will be quite less to be profitable. AND MOSTLY 1 or 1.5 years of new gen are horrible with 4 or 5 good games as developers are getting used to the new hardware and they are hesitant to invest a lot on something which might not sell well due to lack of people having consoles. Unlike many other friends here, I'm not that sad because right now this gen has a few years left in it and in the mean time if a new gen launches, it will be quite chap when I'm ready to move one. Although I still think instead of Holiday 2012, 2013 would have been a better date

This doesn't really matter to me. If a new console is introduced next year, I most likely won't buy until 2013 or later. New consoles are always extremely overpriced and the launch titles are typically garbage. I didn't buy my PS3 until 2009. I paid substantially less than the launch price and had a better choice of games to choose from. 60GB PS3 at launch = $599.99 My 80GB PS3 in 2009 = $279.99

(continued) Fifth, the consoles are competing against one another. If Wii has a new console out, then Xbox and PS don't want to be too far behind with theirs. Not only do they want shoppers to spend money on their console over anothers, they want game developers eager to create better games to do so on their console over others. The 360 certainly set a precedent over the PS3 that there are advantages to come out before the other and neither will want the disadvantage of coming out last. While you or I may not be the type of gamer that jumps on the next console once it's released, there is a large market that will and capturing that market early provides game developers increased incentive to make games for them which leads to greater revenue and a larger market as gamers hear good things about the games on that console. So even if Microsoft and Sony agree with you and don't want to make the next console yet or believe that the current gen still has a lot to offer, it just doesn't make good business sense for them to wait on launching the next console sooner than later. Besides, the xbox 360 has been out 6 years. If the next consoles launches 4Q next year, than that give the current console a life of 7 years which is pretty long in console terms. Not to mention that many will play the console long after that.

(continued) Third, not everyone needs to buy the console when it comes out and most will wait a year or two depending on when they bought their 360/PS3. Those families that bought games for kinect won't be the hardcore gamers targeted by the next console. And if your a hardcore gamer that just got a 360 then there are plenty of great games you can continue to play until your ready to make the next leap forward. Fourth, new consoles aren't merely targeted at gamers but also at the game developers. Game developers see games as a medium for expression, story, etc. The better the console, the better they think they can make a more realistic game. While they may enjoy the current generation of consoles, make no mistake, they would love to develop games for the next console. Which brings us to... (continued)

I'm guessing Microsoft don't want to be left behind by Nintendo and I think the release of GTA V has something to do with this too. But in my opinion, I think it's too soon, maybe at the end of 2013 would be better cause I'm sure a lot of people are still trying to get a 360 and then they enjoy it for a year and then they have to get a new console again. But oh well, let's see how this goes.

Karjah Posted: "What would a new generation of consoles really add at this time that we are missing in our hardware? . . . I think there really isn't anything that can be added at this time to justify a ps4 or xbox 720. If they wish us to purchase their new systems they really need to introduce us to why they feel we need these current wastes of development resources." First off, they likely tell us at E3, and it is hardly a waste of development resourses. Microsoft and Sony make enough money that I would hardly say they are wasting resourses and the game developers that are putting time in a next console aren't wasting resources either as they will be making a game for the next console (regardless of whether they make a game for this console or next). Besides, the ones "wasting" resources are Microsoft, Sony, and game developers; as far as I'm concerned, it's their money and they can spend it however they feel like. Second, a new console allows games to be improved upon more ways than graphically. AI, physics, the # of character models displayed, ability to multi-task (both in an out of games), improved load times with fewer load points, enlarged game worlds, incorporation of a new console gimmick (wii u controller), better incorporation of existing gimmick such as the kinect (improved graphics and response times to the games involving that hardware as well as less system usage by the peripheral), and, yeah, some pretty sweet graphics upgrade. Just because there will be a new console, doesn't mean will have game, just 5 years ahead. I'll just buy that when great games start to release, until then, i'll be playing on X360.
