Next Xbox in 2012, PS4 dev ramping up - Report

Edge sources say Ubisoft and EA have hands on target hardware for Microsoft's next console with a late 2012 launch in mind, Sony has shifted one studio's focus to the next generation.

It appears next-generation console rumors are coming to a consensus. Edge today reported that Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and other unspecified major developers are developing games for the successor to the Xbox 360 with a late 2012 launch expected.

One year left as Microsoft's top dog?
One year left as Microsoft's top dog?

According to the site, Ubisoft Montreal and "certain EA studios" are working on games with Microsoft-provided "target boxes" that use off-the-shelf computer parts matching the planned specifications for the company's next console. The first legitimate devkits for the system are expected to be provided to developers by the end of this year. The given late-2012 release window lines up with rumors from last week that pegged the next Xbox as launching in the holiday season next year.

Edge also provided a corroborating take for another next-generation rumor that had been floating around, this one about Sony's next PlayStation. Last month, rumors circulated that Sony had begun work on PlayStation 4 games--a notion backed up by Edge's report that "one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development" to work on the next console from the electronics giant.

Nice. I won't be participating. My backlog is far to huge for me to sign on with a new 800 dollar system or two. ;)

@naci statements like that make no sense, its about the api and the coding, multiplat games will always be better on pc but to emulate console OS and components through software is a completely different kettle of fish, api and source code is totally dif, please research and educate urself at the pcsx2 forums to fully understand whats involved

@chimdaddy, but are current PCs strong enough to emulate a PS3? How can games like Mavel vs Capcom and Rayman Orgins be improved on a next gen console?

if developers are just getting their hands on pre-release devkits, then that means ideas for those games and prototypes are just now being put together. It could take as long as 2 years to fully develop a game. Assuming that's what we're looking at then 2013 is more likely the year for the new console.

@vega13mv, you miss the point with your friends pc and especially using crysis 2 as an example, modern pc's are x more powerful than current gen, we don't see that power being utilized due to the lowest denominator (xbox) is the platform the games are being optimized for, even bf3 still doesnt use what pc's are capable of and this is due to they still had to cater for less powerful hardware. as for people dont know how they could improve graphics then you dont know games that well. they could use dx11 for example, true hardware tesselation, mre power to compute more complex AI making for less dumb down games. more IQ such as life like water simulation, smoke effects, fire and such, also AA can be implemented. imagine a field being rendered with each blade of grass having its own movement and not just a sprite, I keep sayin as a disclaimer but i own a high power pc and ps3 and 360. i recently replayed killzone2 and by god it need AA with more powerful hardware and advancing tech this is possible, with same old same old we have the same engine year after year which looks old (COD)

Without some kind of hype? I think that when it comes to consoles, you need to make the announcement a year before to get people ready. They may announce the new Xbox on 2012 with a release in 2013. To get the hype machine started.

EA says Battlefield 4 and not Bad Company 3? New systems on a slip of the tongue? Remember the world changes again 12-21-12 so we'll need a new technology to protect us from being outside!

Exactly vega. There's not going to be a jump in graphics like there was back in the 8 to 16 to 32bit etc days. Things are different this gen. I'd say 50% of people want new systems now; And 50% are happy with this gen as of now. 2012 is just too soon.

Alright! Just as Microsoft is working out the bugs in the 360, now we get to look forward to a new console to die on us repeatedly! Yay! (My 360 just died on me for the 5th time, can you tell?)

Too soon for me. Developers are already complaining about it's too expensive to develop a game this gen. Well, lets see what happens next gen then. When a PC can start emulating PS3, then we're ready for next gen in my opinion. Whatever though.

i don't know how much of an improvent it could be at this point. i mean, havent they pretty much hit a wall when it comes to graphical presentation? it's not like its gonna double like it did back in the day when we went from 8 to 16 to 32 to 64 bits and so on, my friend has a pretty modern PC that's supposedly x amount of generations ahead of current consoles and he plays crysis 2 and other games on it, but im not looking at it saying "wow, this is like twice as good as my uncharted 3 for ps3" cuz really, its not, sure resolution, framerate and textures are nicer but it's just polish and a very similiar looking presentation.

M$ had better develop a new HD-disc format as well as a new Xbox... it was a shame HD-DVD lost to Blu-Ray otherwise I would be a proud owner of the HD-DVD add-on... and should M$ go to Sony asking "may we use your Blu-Ray technology"... go figure what would happen there.

Many of you that are complaining that it is too soon to bring next gen systems to the market need to realize this: Technology has improved light years since 6 years ago. It has also become cheaper to produce the parts needed to use new technology. Newer smart phones now have dual core processors (think about that for a second), TV's are smarter and cheaper to produce, there has been so many improvements to technology since 2006. There is a need to bring consoles up to date. I totally agree that the current gen consoles are still fun to play on (I still play my NES and Dreamcast). But if the technology is there why not use it.

the only thing that sucks about new consoles is going through the growing pains of the first year of crappy and sparse releases. Some people are fine with playing the old systems during this time, but once I get a new system I have a tough time focusing on the older games and console......

@da_chub So you're gonna buy a next gen console to play games from this generation? Smart dude. I wouldn't be bragging about Nintendo hardware, when it is clearly the least advanced this gen, and it is lining up to be the least advanced next gen too. I'll be getting WiiU because I'm a gamer and I love some Nintendo first party games. However, mark my words, PS4 will crush WiiU!! Stop being a failing Nintentroll

@Vari3ty said, "Sony isn't stupid enough to make the same mistake twice." Well unfortunately, I think they are... Look at the prices of their HD television sets then look at the other tvs that are in the same genre. There's about a thousand dollar difference. Also, this is going to be their next gen console. My thought is that I bet the package will be better, but they will use expensive parts and will take a loss even at that price point (800 bucks). Only reason the vita's cost is low is because the tech is old. But, I'm sure sony will try to usher out the terabyte blue-ray for the PS4. And, they will make improvements to the memory management w/o having to install anything to the console's hard-drive. But the cost to do all that will be high.

I reckon the "major Sony-owned studio" is Santa Monica behind the God Of War series, it'd certainly fit what with the God Of War IV speculation too. Potentially it could be Guerilla Games instead (Killzone 3). Either way I'd like to see a "PS4" after 2012, preferably late 2013. Either way we all knew the next generation consoles were coming. I don't see the"PS4" costing more then £399 on the basis that it was Sonys only mistake besides releasing after Nintendo and Microsoft. If Sony had released first and priced right, I don't think the 360 would have been as successful as it is now. Nintendo would have still done well, they had that niche. Either way I'm looking forward to it, maybe GTA V will be a launch title if the May release date rumour proves to be false. It'd certainly ensure a much better game.

I don't understand why they want to release a new console unless it is just a financial tactic. Every company's hardware is doing great right now, and can be hugely improved with simply firmware upgrades.

Too the people who say too soon, perhaps your right as console really need the power, as of next year smartphones and tablets will have more power than the current gen, planned next year are smartphone/ tablets with quad core processors, more ram than the consoles and some with tegra 3 processor so Sony and Microsoft need to plan carefully otherwise phones will surpass this gen and the next for technology lol whilst pc still has technology years ahead of both

I kind of don't believe it and for a 1 simple reason: Halo 4. The developers at 343 have repeatedly said that Halo 4 will be an Xbox 360 game and I don't believe for a second that they would release a marquee exclusive title for a system they are replacing that same holiday season. It is possible that they are lying but IMO there is too much involved in producing a new Halo to keep under wraps the fact that it will be a next gen game. Sooner or later they will have to release a screen shot or a gameplay trailer. Plus there is Kinect which has given the 360 longer legs and the 360 is selling great right now. There is more. GTA V is releasing that Holiday season and will be a current gen game, so it won't exactly inspire people to rush out and get a new system when the most popular franchise in the world will be on the systems they have. Plus there is Nintendo's WiiU, a system I imagine will be cheaper and have AAA 1st party titles around the holidays, does MS want to bang heads with that? All of this just makes me think this is really unlikely.

@da_chub Yeah. Quite wise to blindly assume that. *eye-roll* You don't know the specs of the PS4 and next XBOX. No one does. What we DO know is that the Wii-U is practically the equivalent of the PS3 and XBOX 360 in terms of graphics and overall presentation. Once the next systems come out, it's highly likely that Nintendo will once again be behind an entire generation. I'm not saying the Wii-U will be a bad system. I want one. But to think it'll be better than something that doesn't even exist yet? You might as well tattoo "fanboy" on your forehead. :|

I love the over-reactive comments over this. "OMG!! WHY NOW?! BOO-HOO, I JUST GOT A 360, EVEN THOUGH THE THING HAS BEEN OUT FOR SIX YEARS!" It's well past the average lifespan for this generation, guys. By the time the next XBOX comes out (I seriously doubt it'll even arrive in 2012, since zero specs or test screens have been revealed) the 360 will be over 7 years old. The 360 had a damn good run, and most people would agree that it's past its peak. Why be upset? No one is twisting your arm to buy the next console on day one. I don't know about the 360, but you can definitely depend on Sony to keep the PS3 alive and kicking thru 2017. Both the PS3 and 360 have plenty of titles already to keep any hardcore gamer occupied. The only thing I want more than anything right now is something both Microsoft and Sony have rubbed folks the wrong way on for the past few years: Backwards Compatibility. Just because I plan to save up for the next systems doesn't mean you have to. Enjoy the games you have. They aren't going to disappear.
