Nintendo holding Wii U event Sept. 13

NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime to discuss "how the Wii U will change the future of gaming" at NYC briefing next month; release date, price expected.

Nintendo will hold a media event in New York City on September 13, the company told GameSpot this afternoon. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will present at the briefing, discussing "more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment."

Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?
Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?

Two major questions surrounding the Wii U remain: When during this holiday season will it be released? And how much will it cost? The last time Nintendo held an event in New York City hosted by Fils-Aime, the company announced the release date and price for the 3DS. The event took place in January 2011, with the 3DS arriving in the United States during March of that year.

Though Nintendo has remained silent on a price and release date for the Wii U, that hasn't stopped speculation from pouring in. The latest scuttlebutt is that the console will launch in the United States the week of Thanksgiving and the Black Friday shopping period. As for a price, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes the system must launch at $250 or less to be viable.

it is hard to believe that it will cost only $250. id say $399 is more likely, but maybe less. 250...that is like saying this is only a hd wii with a new controller. my ps3 cost $250.

i really dont care. i will be buying it launch day no matter the price with 4 to 5 games as of right now...but i think there is a couple games being held back.

if gamespot doesn't show this event, i found this site, "http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-9020_7-57497493-222/nintendo-to-hold-wii-u-event-in-nyc-on-september-13/" they said, "The CNET crew will be covering next month's event live, so be sure to tune in for all the breaking news." so, i know, i can at least watch it!!!!!!!

isn't it funny? people want the wii u to be more powerful then the 360 and ps3. but yet, they're not willing to pay for it. myself, i couldn't care less about the power of the wii u. it could be weaker then the original nes for all i care. all that matters to me is the exclusive games. if they are better then everyone else.

@DreadGodsHand Its more powerful than the 360/Ps3 theres no arguing that with what can easily be researched about its Cpu/Gpu/Ram capacity. The thing is its not drastically powerful cause Nintendo seems to want to keep their systems affordable (which makes sense in a recession). So many overzealous Fanboy trolls(including those in the press) love to kick dirt around rather than give solid facts. Me not giving a shit about a console war or who wins or whos on top, my concern is accurate details being given. For the good of Video Games I wanna see some moves made towards solidifying Consoles as the place to go for games.

@IanNottinghamX @DreadGodsHand actually nintendo never said what is the cpu or gpu. there have been people claiming to know. but, no one truly knows. all we know is that it is at least as good as the 360 and ps3. please, don't get caught up in these rumors claiming to be fact. i once saw a movie that was suppose to be one thing, and it wasn't. because it was not what i thought it was, i hated it. but, after watching the movie again, it is AWESOME! my point is, if you believe what is not true, just because the press, gamespot, g4tv, etc. said it, if it's not, then you'll hate it without giving it a chance. listen to what nintendo says. these are the sites i go to for information, "press.nintendo.com" and, "www.nintendo.com" press.nintendo, you can only look at the home page. this site is for the press only. but, you are given some information. on www.nintendo.com, click on the tab, on the top of the home page that says, "wii u." they also have a facebook page and youtube page. i don't know much about them though. with all of the LACK of info. nintendo has release, this is why i CAN'T wait for the september conference! seriously, i'll probably have a heart attack, long before it! ha, ha, ha.

Needs to be $250 for a possible impulse buy... Also the economy is still rather weak so much more than $300 would surely doom the U to a slow start.

Great so a potential $250 price point, that will mean £200, which when converted back to dollars is around $450 (nice and fair).

I just hope they include a game with the console to compliment the game pad like with Wii Sports damn that would be so cool of Nintendo.

Most likely NintendoLand, they have to include it if they want to utilize it to its full potential.

The highest price I could imagine for a console is $300. If they can get it down to $200, it will sell like hotcakes for the first six months at least. $250 is the more likely price point...depends on what is included in the package.

Ironically, I was planning to pre-order one of these, but Nintendo waited so long to come with the details that it now makes it financially difficult for me to do. (It would have been feasible if I could spread the payments out over the course of, say, ten months.) I'm not sure why they waited so long to release the concrete details....they're not Apple. If they're afraid that Microsoft or Sony are going to copy their innovations, that's going to happen regardless of when they announce.

@theKSMM Similar situation.

I am definitely looking forward to what the WiiU will have to offer, but we will be waiting until next summer more than likely. Priorities for other equipment before next new game console.

One of the reasons is because they did wait a little too long for us too honestly.

Ruggedization is great and all but this think just looks bulky and awkward--OKAY, I'M STILL BITTER ABOUT WII, okay, I said it. Yeah, that means I hate WiiU for reasons of my own that can't get wrangled in with the other more practical concerns that keep me from buying 'Wii v.2.0.'

Here are the specs guys. I work for nintendo.

Price: Cheap

GPU: Good enough to compete with 360 and ps3

Core: Its alot. It can compete with 2005 360 and 2006 PS3

Hardrive: Plenty of Space to store pikmins3

Features: Utilize touchpad never seen before in the market. Only includes one touchpad, BUT players would be able to still shake their wii remotes to join for multiplayer experience.

there, happy

@zpluffy Sorry but a single-point touch tablet is anything but something never before seen on the market. With 7 year old GPU abilities it better compete at 7 year old prices. Hence 200 bucks or no sell.

Let's see Rayman Legends, Project P-100, New Super Mario Bros. U (never got the Wii or DS version), ZombiU (not getting it but it's a worthy title), and I already preordered Assassin's Creed 3 for the Wii U (especially since my 360 is constantly being hogged by my dad who loves the Kinect).

The loser? The one who lets their prejudice get in the way of having fun, and I know that's not me.

The iPhone 5 is rumored to be announced on September 12. Curious how this will effect the attention people give the Nintendo briefing. All I want to know is "How much?" and "What are the launch titles?"

What I find the most hilarious is some people on Gamespot keep saying the Wii U will be underpowered and barely better than PS3 / 360 but some people are saying we don't need next generation of consoles yet because PS3 still has a lot of life left in it, and that developers are making excuses for not making creative enough new games by blaming lack of next generation of consoles. Make up your mind! Seriously, The Wii U will have hardware that's faster than the GPUs in PS3 / 360 but it won't compete with PS4 and Xbox 720. Nintendo instead will focus on its main franchises and innovative gameplay. I am sure COD players will be waiting for Xbox 720 or w/e it is anyway. On MetaCritic, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 rank as the 2nd and 3rd highest rated console games last generation. As long as Nintendo prices this under $299, has many great Nintendo franchise titles and improves its 3rd party title support it should do well. Unlike Patchter, I'll give this console a chance and not only evaluate it on specs. Gamecube was pretty powerful compared to PS2 and look how well that turned out. Can't just look at the specs boys!

Yes it will. Sony and MS are taking the same strategy this time around. They might have marginally more power, but it won't be a huge difference.

Haven't seen you in a while :D

While you know I agree with you, there is that statement that Sony made saying that it won't release a PS4 until they can make another technological leap like with the PS3, so either we're going to get another $600 (or even higher) system or we're going to have to wait until 2016 Sony, pick your poison :P

Agreed, I actually had an interview with GameStop last week and the manager told me that this extended generation has hurt game sales overall because the demand for gaming consoles has been really low since pretty much by this point, everyone who wants a PS3/360 should already have one.

@abHS4L88

Yeah, but Sony has said a lot of things. They've also talked about using through-silicon vias, stacked memory, and FPGAs. We know they had pie-in-the-sky dreams at one point, but the current credible rumors point towards conservative hardware, especially in hindsight of the losses the company has posted recently.

I don't think Sony can afford to launch at $600 again. For one thing, even if they did go all-out with hardware, the consumer isn't going to notice a $600 difference. But more importantly, consumers just aren't as willing to spend $600 on a console as they were before. And even the PS3 didn't last long at $600. The bonus of designing a more conservative system is that they won't have to wait so long to release, either.

To be fair, Phantom Dust was a 1st party title and Psychonauts was an exclusive (that didn't do as well as it should've). The problem with the XBox was that people primarily got it for Halo and only for Halo. Whenever I played XBox from any of my friends, all they ever played was Halo >.>. The GameCube still had its great 1st party titles (Smash Brothers Melee still being played in tournaments to this day) and the best version of Soul Calibur 2 (not only because of Link) and Resident Evil 4.
