Nintendo holding Wii U event Sept. 13

NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime to discuss "how the Wii U will change the future of gaming" at NYC briefing next month; release date, price expected.

Nintendo will hold a media event in New York City on September 13, the company told GameSpot this afternoon. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will present at the briefing, discussing "more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment."

Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?
Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?

Two major questions surrounding the Wii U remain: When during this holiday season will it be released? And how much will it cost? The last time Nintendo held an event in New York City hosted by Fils-Aime, the company announced the release date and price for the 3DS. The event took place in January 2011, with the 3DS arriving in the United States during March of that year.

Though Nintendo has remained silent on a price and release date for the Wii U, that hasn't stopped speculation from pouring in. The latest scuttlebutt is that the console will launch in the United States the week of Thanksgiving and the Black Friday shopping period. As for a price, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes the system must launch at $250 or less to be viable.

@Tripwolf FAIL. Dreamcast sold 20 million worldwide in a 3 year lifespan. Pretty good for a shortlived console.

@LindBergh2007 @Tripwolf Nintendo could definetly live with 20 million Wii U sold in 3 years. It would give them a another two to add to the total, and keep them in line with their 5 year lifespan.

If they can secure at least 10m units sold before the next gen XBox comes out (because apparently it should be coming out next year) then the Wii U should have little to no chance of failing since I'm pretty sure 3rd parties won't abandon it.

The difference with Sega and Nintendo is that Nintendo doesn't suffer from internal conflict and one of the main reasons why the Dreamcast was pulled was because the CEO who wanted to keep the Dreamcast alive passed away and the new CEO decided to pull the plug on it.

Nintendo should have had all of they're information together at E3 not now. nintendo seems to not be able to make up they're minds on what to do. just tell us everything we need to know already, specs, PRICE, and launch titles. Enough with the gimmicks already.

They revealed the launch titles for the most part already, as for the price and date, revealing it mid September and releasing it in November is exactly what they did with the Wii.

people may bitch and moan all day long about the touch screen (which is highly sensitive) or the weight of the gamepad (which is just over a pound) or the graphics (games ported directly from xbox play excellently). but the fact is this will do spectacularly because the mere gimmick of a tablet controller and the people playing together will be enough to bring in crowds. i am positive they will use it to great effect and we'll have great games. the problem with the wii was they released a low fidelity system with better systems like the xbox which made porting difficult. hence the lack of games. now they are ahead of the technical curve and most devs are behind them since it will take at least 1 1/2 to 2 years for another xbox or ps. even crytek is mulling a wiiu port of crysis 3 since graphics are a the LEAST on par with the xbox. this will be popular and i'm behind this all the way

@aniforprez Graphic power is better than xbox or ps3, the thing is right now they are doing ports, wich means they will probably look the same. I know they haven't released any specs but is really easy to have a better hardware than 5 years ago, actually it would be hard to have a worse hardware, they would have to look for old bad chips... yeah right.

You compare it with the 360 or ps3 and Wii U has similar power but far less games. It must launch at 199 to compete or it will sink. I like the quality of Nintendo products but 250-400 is not happening anytime soon for me or most my friends.

@The_Dragon_Born let's be real here. when the xbox launched i think it launched at 300$. the ps3 launched at 400$. this has more power than either console and they're riding on the fact that people are begging for a new console. this console will not only be able to play every game released for other consoles, but also ones far better in fidelity. a launch price of 300$ is completely reasonable and upto 400$ is definitely accepable since they're throwing in the tablet which is not exactly the cheapest controller around.

@aniforprez Let's be real here with the economy where it's at right now and the lackluster launch games for Wii U myself and many of my friends aren't energized by anything above 200 bucks.. The tablet is in NO WAY a deal breaker for the average consumer, they are paying for games not single-point tablets. Wii U will at launch be VERY comparable graphically to 360 and ps3. It must also compete financially too in these times. Sorry to say but manufacturing costs have been vastly overrated. Many sources are saying less than 180 to produce a Wii U.

@aniforprez That tablet is a lot cheaper than you might think. It has enough technology in it to communicate with the console, but your not getting any kind of decent mobile processor in there. Without a Wii U the controller will be a paper weight. It won't be rootable or be able to load Android on it.

I do think $300 is a reasonable price, though I'd like to see it at $250.

Comparing Wii and Wii U to Xbox 360 and PS3 is non-sensical. Nintendo has created a generation of it's own by putting low-tech in the Wii. The Wii U is going to be better than PS3 and Xbox 360, but nobody knows by how much. The PS4 and Xbox 1080 are likely to negate the graphical differences and are most likely to exceed the capabilities of the Wii U exponentially.

The 3ds xl costs $200 so I can't see the wiiu which has more physical mass and components being $250. It's going to cost around $350 to $400 easily, and if nintendo launches the wiiu with some realy good games it will sell well.

This time I hope Pachter is right $250.00 is the Max that parents can hope to afford for buying the Wii U for the kids for Christmas. Nintendo is the first to launch ahead of Microsoft and Sony. Who already have the Wii U countered should the concept prove to be a runnaway success. Worldwide economy is bad so we shall see how the Wii U does. Did Nintendo learn from the 3DS in finding the right price. I $325.00 is the limit the Big N can hope to get away with. This system needs a pack-in game showcasing that Gamepad. Which is Nintendo's most expensive controller ever. Good luck with getting to the $250.00. Maybe Nintendo could make a Pachter edition of the Wii U.

@Megavideogamer I don't know about that. When I worked in retail, parents had no problem spending $300 or $400 for whatever the newest gaming console was, whether it was the latest PS3 or Xbox 360 iteration. Parents, especially if they are divorced and do not see their kids everyday, are eager to buy their kid's love and affection.

As long as Nintendo doesnt price this system at an insane price (like $400)... it will do well especially launching (here in the states) before black friday... hell if its $250 or less I'm in just for a chance to play current gen looks on the first party titles that Nintendo has to offer

Still pretty skeptical about this tbh. The fact that Nintendo hasn't shown us any decent first party software for this console yet leaves a lot to be desired. I mean, having a touch-screen tablet controller is all very well, however if you haven't got any decent games that can fully utilize it in the right way, then it renders it pointless and a bit gimmicky. They really should have shown us a lot more than they did at the E3 presentation, which was, let's be honest, a complete shambles. Still, let's not jump to conclusions just yet. Hopefully, Nintendo will show us just what the Wii U is really capable of at this event, in terms of its hardware, software, and what else you do besides gaming. I have hope :)

I'm still not sure what to think about the Wii U...Nintendo just hasn't proven itself with online and the fact they didn't make it much more powerful than PS3/360 just doesn't make sense. If they had designed a system that would take a big leap from everything out now power wise it would have likely been a great advantage.

@TimboII Nintendo will never put out a hugely powerful console anyways - it goes against their philosophy. Nintendo has always followed a simple ideal: Use technology that is familiar and that we completely understand, then create something unique and fun to use with that older technology."

The Gameboy, the snes, the N64, even the Wii all used technology that was old. Nintendo likes it that way. They'll take the older tech and use it to its potential in creative ways.

@TimboII It just a wait & see now, I think that's what they are trying to do with WiiU improve their online..hence they talked alot more about online this time round. It is more powerful than X360/PS3 is by how much no one knows for sure...but its the games that it can get/have that will count the most.

@TimboII Again people saying its weaker than xbox/playstation are wrong. And Nintendo doesnt help their case by showing off games that dont look better visually. This coming Gen wont be at all about which console is more powerful because it wasnt about that in Current gen games.720 and Ps4 wont be drastically stronger than the current gen consoles...

@Wahab_MinSeo Are you aware that DirectX is an API set owned by Microsoft? Therefore, only Microsoft products use DirectX. Macs, Android, iOS, Sony and Nintendo consoles, they all use alternatives such as the OpenGL family of instructions to help out developers.

@Wahab_MinSeo No, it is not. Microsoft owns DirectX and it is only used in Windows, XBox, and in the upcoming Windows Phone 8 (I am not totally sure about the last one). As far as I know, Microsoft considers DirectX as an asset against competition and thus do not open it to licensing. You are probably confused by the fact the GPU in the Wii is based in a regular card that, when used in a Windows PC, is able to support DirectX. However, take note that the hardware and software in consoles is far better optimized for gaming, reason why all consoles perform better than PCs with similar specs.

I'm really skeptical about wii u because this time they do not offer anything new to original wii. They are just adding their Nintendo DS concept to a home console. (touchscreen, two screens etc. ) Nevertheless it is gonna be upgraded Wii and as long as support the system with great software just like they did on original Wii, it will be successful. There's no need for fancy big tablet controller. Think of it just like an add-on.

@hasancakir I am kind of uninterested in the Wii U but your argument is contradictory as the original Wii couldn't use a second screen with touch controls.
