Nintendo holding Wii U event Sept. 13

NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime to discuss "how the Wii U will change the future of gaming" at NYC briefing next month; release date, price expected.

Nintendo will hold a media event in New York City on September 13, the company told GameSpot this afternoon. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will present at the briefing, discussing "more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment."

Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?
Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?

Two major questions surrounding the Wii U remain: When during this holiday season will it be released? And how much will it cost? The last time Nintendo held an event in New York City hosted by Fils-Aime, the company announced the release date and price for the 3DS. The event took place in January 2011, with the 3DS arriving in the United States during March of that year.

Though Nintendo has remained silent on a price and release date for the Wii U, that hasn't stopped speculation from pouring in. The latest scuttlebutt is that the console will launch in the United States the week of Thanksgiving and the Black Friday shopping period. As for a price, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes the system must launch at $250 or less to be viable.

People have different tastes in gaming. It really irritates me when people bash a system to no end just because it does not offer what THEY want, while at the same time, others may enjoy it a lot. Yet, the people that do enjoy a system that others hate are called names and mindless fan boys.

Just because there may be something you may not like about the Wii U, does not mean it is going to fail. Just because one of your previous systems has more games than another does not mean that the latter system is a failure. I have more Wii games than 360 games, but I enjoy both systems equally. All this talk about Nintendo is failing and going downhill is just stupid. They made changes over the past decade, but I won't blame them. They have been in the game for a long time, it is good they are mixing things up instead of doing the EXACT same thing. (Keyword: exact)

@Flint247

Recently my Wii console has become my hardcore gaming machine while my 360 became the casual console (thanks to my dad's obsession with the Kinect DX) and like you said, it's down to preferences and because my dad hogs my 360 is another reason for me to get the Wii U since it will have multiplatform games on it, starting with Assassin's Creed 3.

@Flint247 $400 isn't exactly going to drive consumers to the console.

@LindBergh2007 @Flint247 Where did you get $400 from? You can't just pluck a figure out of thin air and say "hey is gonna fail because it's $400"

@Flint247 I totally agree - system fanboyism is narrow minded and pointless; I enjoy games on my Wii, Xbox and PS3. I have to say I haven't bought that many Wii games, but that's down to personal preference - there are some amazing games on it though.

I happened to look at overall game sales the other day and couldn't believe what I saw.... out of the top 25 selling games of all time, 22 of them were Nintendo games (7 of them on Wii).... I don't agree with everything Nintendo do, but they will be around forever!

I really wish they would have prepared better for this. It feels so rushed out to market it is ridiculous. We knew it was coming out, but we didn't know the price, launch lineup, or anything else about it, and we won't until almost a month before it's released. I am still waiting for GameStop to start taking preorders for this. This makes me believe that NINTENDO does not think this system will sell unless it is released right at the holidays. I feel that they should release it around February, so they can set up a better marketing campaign. You know they will not have a good supply of units available, and all of those will be eaten up with preorders instantly, so the parents that find out about this from their kids a month before it's released will be in trouble. there will be people out there buying as many as possible to sell on E Bay, so they can make a profit on parents that want to give their child what they want for Christmas. If NINTENDO does not prepare they will have a backlash coming from this strategy.

I'm pretty sure you forgot that they revealed the price and launch date of the Wii almost exactly two months before it launched? That's pretty much how things are looking for the Wii U, and did this hurt Wii sales at all? No, in fact the way they marketed the Wii was genius so I have no doubts that they have something up their sleeves for the Wii U, really all it takes is one commercial to tell most consumers who don't pay attention to the gaming industry that it's a new system and something you'd want to have in your house.

@exedeath They are waiting to talk about release date and price because they know most people can only be hyped to buy it for about a month. After that, it progressively leaves from the public memory. As much as I would like to know it earlier, I have to concede they are just doing their homework.

Also, missing the holidays season would be a disaster as it is the peak of sales for any console.

As far as I can tell, Nintendo is taking proper care of the system launch. I am disappointed by the first party software offering but I cannot complain about anything else.

@exedeath You think they should release it AFTER Christmas?! You don't work in Sales & Marketing do you? Nintendo know that the system will sell well at Launch simply due to the hardcore fans and probably a good number of "casuals" as well. Contrary to popular belief manufacturers don't need to heavily market their new systems for launch because that's the easiest time for them to sell (especially at Christmas) and unit numbers are limited anyway (plus it's always nice to say "Hey we sold out").

I do agree that the lack of factual info is a bit odd/annoying though, but Nintendo are always a bit mysterious after all.

I'd love to see this. Even it if ends up being complete marketing nonsense I always enjoy watched Reggie talk up a product.

Only if the real Reggie take the stage. The Robotic replacement we watched at the last E3 is totally unnecessary.

There will be live streaming most likely. I recommend NintnedoLife since, from experience, they seem to be the fastest in bringing up to date information on anything Nintendo related. That's where I watched Nintendo's E3 presentation.

Can't wait to see what will actually be available for launch. Got a chance to play with the system over the weekend, and I'm feeling pretty confident in a preorder. I do this fully aware that it's main use will probably be to play older games or "just look pretty" while I'm waiting 9 months+ for the game that makes you say "That's what I've been waiting for!". This is a Nintendo system after all.

@FallenOneX i understand what you mean by 9 months, but, i have had a 3ds since 8/?/2011. and, i have got so many, "That's what i've been waiting for!" and, nintendo stated that they are trying to release a blockbuster game (i'm paraphrasing) every few months. and they started that a few months ago. and, it's AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just wait, if they keep this pace up, and continue it with the wii u, we will be apon GREATNESS!

You know what I think this console may bring them back for awhile but its probably gonna be just as successful as the Wii. I mean Nintendo did have a goal with the original Wii and rather we the players agree with their ideas they must've met some kinda of mind blowing result. Cheer up folks if Nintendo don't succeed I along with alot of other folks will be at their door step saying "I told you so!"

A system far ahead of its time? More advanced than the system that crushed it? Under appreciated due to media hype of another console that actually wasn't as powerful?

@mtait01 I'm afraid there aren't many questions that could be answered for me that didn't find out to my disappointment, but hopefully it will at last settle for me whether there is any real good reason to get this one or just wait a few generations since I already have a Wii.

when has nintendo ever charged even as much as the other hardware makers? (sega, sony, etc.) and when sony charged $500 for the cheapest ps3, that hurt them so much, no one, nintendo, microsoft, or sony will charge that much again. sony learned their lesson. (they are not stupid) and microsoft and nintendo had to of learned from sony's mistake. (they are not stupid either)

Why would they overprice it? When have they EVER overpriced their consoles? No the 3DS wasn't overpriced.

As for the info, I believe it'll be Nov. 16th (Miyamoto's 60th birthday) priced at either $300-$350.
