Nintendo holding Wii U event Sept. 13

NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime to discuss "how the Wii U will change the future of gaming" at NYC briefing next month; release date, price expected.

Nintendo will hold a media event in New York City on September 13, the company told GameSpot this afternoon. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will present at the briefing, discussing "more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment."

Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?
Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?

Two major questions surrounding the Wii U remain: When during this holiday season will it be released? And how much will it cost? The last time Nintendo held an event in New York City hosted by Fils-Aime, the company announced the release date and price for the 3DS. The event took place in January 2011, with the 3DS arriving in the United States during March of that year.

Though Nintendo has remained silent on a price and release date for the Wii U, that hasn't stopped speculation from pouring in. The latest scuttlebutt is that the console will launch in the United States the week of Thanksgiving and the Black Friday shopping period. As for a price, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes the system must launch at $250 or less to be viable.

I really don't care to hear more of Reggie Fils-Aime's bullshit. The Wii U is just another lame Nintendo gimmick, and of you buy into it, you're a fool.

You are free to troll on here I guess. Why don't you quit wasting your time you could be jizzing over your Sony or Microsoft products. =) You are just like anyone else and don't really know much about the WiiU because not much has been released about it. Yet you come on here and post about something that you know nothing about. I bet that's how your entire life story has been.....run your mouth and know nothing. I LOL at you.

@lmaocarrots I swear that's straight up Sonyfan talk right there I've been to so many sites and that's Sony Fanboyism occasionally you get 360 fans to pop out of their closet but they mostly stay neutral I'll admit Nintendo didn't have the best of looks but it sure in hell was fun.....Gimmick WTF!!!!!! "COD" and the list goes on and don't comeback with Mario...God of War

need I explain more it should have only been 4 titles Prequel, First, Second, Third...Mario has no true beginning(story) he was just there and blew up with popularity

P.S. I have all three systems No name calling

Pikmin 3 being a launch game is the deciding factor of whether or not I buy the Wii U quickly. If not, I can wait until Super Smash Bros 4.

If it can play existing Wii games in HD like Dolphin, I'll definitely pick one up. Otherwise, I'll probably wait, as none of the launch titles really excite me right now.

@Raeldor If it's able to do that, I'm guessing the games will be in the form of updated titles available for download on the Wii U. It would probably be extremely difficult to take the Wii game discs you already own and make them run in HD.

It would be really nice if that was possible. I'm sort of hoping the Next Xbox will be able to take 720p 360 games and make them run in 1080p. Unlikely though.

@Spartan_418 Well, if they can do it on an open source PC Wii emulator, they should be able to do it on the Wii-U. Might be more effort that they're willing to put in though.

@Raeldor Yeah and they would probably want you to buy HD remakes of games for the new console rather than just playing the ones you already own.

I have a ton of Wii games I still haven't played AND some that were recently ported from Japan (two RPGs I can't remember the name of). It'll also be great to just use existing remotes on the Wii U. Seriously, anyone who already owns a Wii would benefit by picking one of these up(which is a lot of people). I'm so tired of the graphic-heavy repetative FPS crap that's saturating all of the other systems these days. Nintendo, even if they don't have awesome 3rd party support, will always have IPs. And they're typically enough to carry the system.

I will definitly not buy the Wii U at launch, I´ll wait until the other year because maybe Microsoft or Sony announce their consoles, and I´ll be waiting Wii U have really good games after a year or months, that way I´ll decide what console to buy.Another reason is also because I want to see what games come out on Vita, yes maybe Wii U has better graphics, etc etc. But Vita is a HANDHELD with so much POWER it can do better than this but Sony doesn´t approach it (sorry for some grammar mistakes)

It's changing the face of gaming so much that 3rd party developers have threatened to drop it if Nintendo didn't make a normal Gamepad.

Where'd you hear that farce? Pachter? There's so many inconsistencies with his statement. Let's start off with what already makes his statement invalid when he said "Activison never talked to me." so basically everything he's stating is PURE speculation.

Next we have TreyArch, the developer of Black Ops that went on record stating their interest in the GamePad and how it can advance the Call of Duty series. Seems weird that a developer would pressure Nintendo into making a traditional controller when they just praised the GamePad.

Now let's look at Nintendo, when the Wii launched, Nintendo already recognized that users will still want a traditional control setup so shortly after they revealed the Classic Controller and later updated it to the Wii Pro controller. So if they created a traditional controller for the Wii, wouldn't it make sense that they do the same exact thing for the Wii U?

@abHS4L88 errrmmm... Let's just say, hypothetically of course, that you're TreyArch and you HATE the GamePad. Would actually say that? I mean it's probably still worth your time to make at least SOME version of your games for the Wii U, even if it's not great -- even if it's just a port of an older game. Saying you didn't like the controller could only hurt your potential sales. I'm not buying this Wii U stuff but if I were them, I certainly wouldn't PUBLICLY knock the controller.

That said, you are correct about the Wii Pro controller. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the current Wii Pro controller will actually be compatible.

Lol, same here. I mean when I saw the headline that Black Ops 2 features something new and innovative for the series that will "change the way we play CoD", I was intrigued despite not caring for the franchise because if it's something awesome, it might convince me to try it out. Then I actually read the article and it talked about "podcasting" and I was like "Dafuq is this? That's it??????" :P

The thing with statements like that is that if it's a lie, then why say anything to begin with? That's what I don't understand. There have been many companies that have kept their mouths shut about the Wii U, doesn't mean they hate it or like it, so if you're going to go on record, it's probably because you have something to say that you believe in. Plus they didn't confirm Black Ops 2 yet when they made that statement so yeah, what's the point of lying when it's much easier to just not say anything and still maintain good relationships.

It will but I want the Wii U Pro controller since it doesn't need to be attached to a WiiMote.

The different between Nintendo's home consoles and Sony/Microsoft is that they've almost always released their home consoles in prime condition, meaning that they price it effectively so there's no need for a price drop any time soon and they don't need to release updated models (like the PS3 and 360) so I have no problems buying one at launch.

@abHS4L88 But unlike Sony and Microsoft, they make a profit on the console rather than losing money. Sony and Microsoft took a hit on this generation of consoles (I believe Sony was losing $150ish per console sold). I would say that for the hardware, you're getting far less value out of a Nintendo console AND they have less incentive to get high quality games out.

I'm not saying that you're wrong... I just can't understand why Nintendo would tell you that they are making a profit on each console sold when it's well documented that Sony and Microsoft were losing money. I heard that and I was a little shocked by that. To me, it shows a real lack of confidence or a real lack of quality in the product.

Take into account that the Wii U will be able to play next generation games so by the time the next gen Playstation and XBox come rolling in, we'll already have a nex gen console and hopefully be playing games that are out of the reach of the PS3 and 360.

@abHS4L88 I don't know. I mean first is that I bought the Wii for $250 and got a machine that was inferior in terms of performance to the 360 that I paid $400 for. Was it novel and provide something unique? yes. Was it important to the industry? Absolutely. But was it really worth my money? I don't know.

For $250 I bought a console that has all of maybe 10 titles on it and download service that really only has good rereleases on it. For $400 I've got a console that plays over 70 games and is releasing decent to good new downloadable content on a regular basis.

And all that aside, while I'm sure that the Wii U Pad is far more capable than a tablet, I've yet to actually hear of any features that are all that different from the SmartGlass. The only REAL benefit to it that I've seen (that's truly different) is asynchronous gameplay which I'm not sure is out of the grasp of SmartGlass. The only thing interested me at all was the Rayman demo. That's seemed like something that won't be easily replicated on SmartGlass.

In other words, the $250-$300 that I could potentially spend on a Wii U appears to catch up to something I payed $400 in 2005 for. And that's not counting the $250 I spent on the Wii in 2006 (a year after I bought my 360). So I'll have actually spent an extra $100+ on this hardware. Is the difference between SmartGlass/Wii U Pad really worth it? Especially considering that the MAIN selling point are first party games, most of which aren't going to be in the launch window and of which there will only be about a dozen over the course of the system's life? Either of the other two system will put out more quality games than that in a single year... And the fact that the Wii U will be able to play current generation games is actually moot since that will only last for about a year and still requires an investment of $300 to play something I can already play...

I understand, but we have to remember that Nintendo is exclusively a videogame hardware/software company unlike Sony and Microsoft so they really can't afford to sell their systems at a loss, and when they sell at a profit, I believe it's not much more than the system costs to manufacture, which is why they're able to keep it that way for at least 2-3 years.

I wouldn't say you're getting less value from a Nintendo console because it's not as powerful because at least they still deliver very high quality games and while the Wii didn't have amazing 3rd party support, the 3rd parties that put effort into their Wii titles almost always came out with a great game. Also take into account the Wii launched at $250 while the 360 launched at $400 and the PS3 at $600,

I'll be getting one. It looks like a lot of fun. I don't see the aversion to it unless you can't afford it which is a good excuse but that doesn't make the prospect any less enticing for those of us. HD Super Mario looks great, Rayman Legends looks amazing, Pikmin 3 looks sublime, and even games like ZombiU and Project P-100 looks interesting. I'll be there day 1 and I just went back to PC gaming. That is being a gamer. Playing all kinds of different games. Not buying 1 system and crapping on everything else.
