Nintendo holding Wii U event Sept. 13

NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime to discuss "how the Wii U will change the future of gaming" at NYC briefing next month; release date, price expected.

Nintendo will hold a media event in New York City on September 13, the company told GameSpot this afternoon. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will present at the briefing, discussing "more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment."

Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?
Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?

Two major questions surrounding the Wii U remain: When during this holiday season will it be released? And how much will it cost? The last time Nintendo held an event in New York City hosted by Fils-Aime, the company announced the release date and price for the 3DS. The event took place in January 2011, with the 3DS arriving in the United States during March of that year.

Though Nintendo has remained silent on a price and release date for the Wii U, that hasn't stopped speculation from pouring in. The latest scuttlebutt is that the console will launch in the United States the week of Thanksgiving and the Black Friday shopping period. As for a price, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes the system must launch at $250 or less to be viable.

if the price for it is 250-300 id most likely pre order it but its going to be so hard having that and a PS4. I already regret having the 360 and PS3 and having to juggle them lol.

@abnergoinbig

I need a Wii U, especially for multiplatform games right now because my poor 360 is constantly being hogged by my dad to play Kinect Sports DX (he thinks he's getting a work out from it, silly dad). Makes me wish I didn't get Arkham City for it (since I've barely been able to play it for mainly that reason). Hopefully the Wii U will be the only next gen home console I need to get :D

@abHS4L88 @abnergoinbig hahahaha yep you know if Nintendo can handle the sales and manain them good they could make a great balance between their charming and stuning games and other games with creative, blowing ideas. A mix of both kind of gaming would be cool, lets hope the best.

Maybe, maybe not, what I know right now is that I'm absolutely positive the Wii U will deliver games I will love to play time and time again. If Sony/Microsoft's next systems appeal to me, then I can wait 2 years after the Wii U to get one of those (and my dad can have my 360, haha).

Understandable, I might be interested in getting Ninja Gaiden 3 also if Nintendo was successful in working with Team Ninja to make it a much better game.

Since a Nintendo official has come out and said the price of the Wii U will be one of the most important things for the system, I speculate the price will be $299.99.

The hardware inside the Wii U console is marginally better than current gen consoles (if you go by rumors), so that means the GamePad will be one element that will probably equal a quarter of the price. $200 for the console and $100 for the controller. I can happily pay that price during the launch window. Now I only need a couple of games at launch to make me willing to pre-order.

@Celsius765 @bananaclawz No skyward sword??? Mario kart was alright, not a huge fan brawl, loved Melee though. Metroid primes are amazing, loved Mario galaxy, never played 2 though. Not trying to flame, however I hate it when nintendo fans think that Nintendo is best thing since slice bread when they messed up so many times. The 360 is my least favorite of next gen consoles, the PS3 being my favorite, and yes they have some major mess up as well.

@CleanPlayer I would pay 350 if they could make the tablet control be usable as a tablet, you know that you can carry it to many places maybe play minigames of the games you buy, apps etc. And it would be cool they make it more powerful, I dont want they to make the same mistake from 6 years ago.....Imagine Wii U have these generations graphics and then the other one has huge better, also I´m not worried only about graphics I´m worried about that if the other consoles have more power maybe some games dont come to the Wii U because it sounds familiar isn´t it?

The Wii U GamePad cannot function far away from its home console, although it will be able to use apps.

We're looking at the beginning of the Wii U's life span so of course it's visuals aren't going to blow us away, especially considering this is Nintendo's first HD console. By next year or so, the visuals should start looking much better as developers will have more time to understand how to harness the Wii U's capabilities. I can already imagine what the next Smash Bros will be like since Namco-Bandai is already experienced in making HD games.

Indeed it will BUT it will skyrocket the cost of the GamePad since the GamePad will require it's own GPU/CPU.

@abHS4L88 @CleanPlayer I know what the GamePad is captable to do what I mean is that Nintendo would make it big if kids, and people could take the tablet and using it, maybe even for connection between the 3DS doesn´t sound cool, I think the gamepad may have the captabilities to do that!

It's stupid really, he's asking a next gen system to sell at the same price as the current gen, it's like asking the 360 to launch at the same price range as the PS2, XBox and GameCube.

@abHS4L88 That's not the best example. The 360 was a significant leap in performance were as not only has the evidence so far show the Wii U to be a far more limited upgrade but Nintendo them selves refuse to reassure their customers on the issue of power.

@abHS4L88 Trying something new is fine but don’t expect people to pay a lot more money just for innovation. If Nintendo are going to charge more they need to give more, it's that simple.

I understand, but at the same time, Sony and Microsoft have almost always simply updated their systems with each new entry and haven't really tried anything different, and although I believe their next home consoles will be something different for once, Nintendo always dares to change things up so for me, I know I'll be getting a great value from the Wii U.

@abHS4L88 @Yulaw2000 he means that if Nintendo wants us to pay 300 350 or even more they need to make the console values it, with good games, the captabilities and power of the console, and gaming experience

Significant amount more? Even if it's $350, it's $100 more than the PS3, which is 6 years old and the Wii U is brand new and will be able to play next generation games.

I know in terms of power PCs have made massive leaps, but in visuals, yes it's obvious that the visuals are stunning on PCs compared to consoles BUT I'm saying that the leap isn't as big as the previous generation and home consoles can never match PCs if it hopes to be affordable.

As for the PS4 being 10x more powerful, I only see that happening if they decide to either launch the PS4 within the next two years at $600 again or wait until 2016 when the technology is more affordable. Either way will be highly damaging to Sony so I honestly don't see that happening.

@abHS4L88 @Yulaw2000 What?! PC's made huge leaps and right now PC is blowing the consoles out of the water when it comes to hardware. I dont even own a PC and can admit that. Sony already stated that they will not release a PS4 until it can be 10x more powerful than the PS3.

This is Nintendo's first entry to HD so obviously they're not going to blow us out of the water with the visuals of their games just yet (although I think Pikmin 3 looks quite amazing) plus there's also the question on whether or not the next gen Playstation and XBox will also make another leap, which is likely not going to happen, especially considering that PC's haven't even made that much of a jump in the past 6 years.

I forgot where but (I believe IGN) stated that this upcoming Nintendo Direct WILL reveal the price and launch date.

And for those of you complaining that they've should've revealed it earlier, they did the same exact thing with the Wii, price and launch date was revealed mid September and the system itself launched almost exactly two months later.

@abHS4L88 The problem is that the "economy" is now much worse and people need more time to save for it. The average Joe won't be doing that until he is sure that the price to power ratio is fair and that he has a reason to get it.

Indeed, I just picked up a really good paying job so by the time the Wii U launches, I should have enough money to purchase one along with 2-3 games but if I had my previous job, it would've been extremely tough since I also have a debt I need to get out of.

You can try and try but they'll never say anything about a price or release date until they feel like it. Anyways, 250 Dollars or less would be great.

I believe the Wii U will be the perfect platform to revitalize old franchises along with test new ones, especially since they've ingeniously created NintendoLand and Miiverse, which could make all of this possible.

Nintendo wants to bring back F-Zero, checks to see how much positive attention it's getting in NintendoLand and MiiVerse, if all looks good, then they go ahead with the project.

They have a new major IP they want to create, release a demo version of it on NintendoLand to serve as a testing ground to see user reaction.

@Brokazaki Hmm, I'm inclined to agree, but I think that's more out of necessity than anything. When Sony first entered the console arena, it challenged Nintendo not with first party software, but with third party support. That is the backbone of the Playstation brands success: a strong third party library.

Nintendo, on the other hand, succeeds on the consistent quality of its first party titles. It has a legacy, and it uses that succeed. I don't think Nintendo is going to challenge any of its competitors on the third party front without a significant push in that area.

While I would like to agree, Sony does bust out a lot of new IPs also, but you're right about majority of their most notable titles being from 3rd parties.

You need to realize though that Nintendo makes many more New first/second party IPs than Sony or Microsoft. Look at the best Xbox/PS3 titles and most of them are third party, even if exclusive

@robat223 Mainstream sites shouldn't cover video game consoles anyways. They confuse things and call the 3DS the same as a DS and the Wii U just a "controller"
