Nintendo holding Wii U event Sept. 13

NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime to discuss "how the Wii U will change the future of gaming" at NYC briefing next month; release date, price expected.

Nintendo will hold a media event in New York City on September 13, the company told GameSpot this afternoon. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will present at the briefing, discussing "more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment."

Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?
Will Nintendo finally announce the Wii U price and release date next month?

Two major questions surrounding the Wii U remain: When during this holiday season will it be released? And how much will it cost? The last time Nintendo held an event in New York City hosted by Fils-Aime, the company announced the release date and price for the 3DS. The event took place in January 2011, with the 3DS arriving in the United States during March of that year.

Though Nintendo has remained silent on a price and release date for the Wii U, that hasn't stopped speculation from pouring in. The latest scuttlebutt is that the console will launch in the United States the week of Thanksgiving and the Black Friday shopping period. As for a price, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes the system must launch at $250 or less to be viable.

I will wait years until I get this. I don't believe in Nintendo's lies anymore. After all the fail the wii was, I don't believe this will have many games. The wii has a lot of shovelware. This looks like another gimmick to me, just like the wii.

When did Nintendo ever lie? Granted the Wii had a lot of shovelware, but it's not like it was hard to find great games on it. No one forced you to buy the crap titles, no one forced you to buy the Wii. The Wii U, in my opinion, has a solid launch library.

Technically they never specified which castle so it's not lying, just not telling the whole truth.

@zzamaro if you would have said they lied about zelda TP being a wii exclusive, i might have believed you. but, people knew that it was coming out for the wii long before they knew it was coming out for the gamecube. and, yes, you're right, it wasn't a 100% accurate. but, nintendo did release the add on for $20 to fix it. and, all future wiimotes had the add on built into it, for the same price as the other ones. they messed up and released it early. they are human after all. but, they still rectified their mistake. and, what update for games? the only game they promised will have an update was zelda: skyward sword. and, it did have an update.

And I did and found nothing, so that just tells me that you don't want to be proven wrong and just hide behind terms like "fanboyism" that I clearly am not demonstrating.

Especially since you didn't even answer my other question.

So what about Zelda? How is that a big deal? If anything it allowed it the recognition it deserved because if it remained on the GameCube, especially with the Wii launching, you think it would've sold as well? That was a smart move on Nintendo's part.

As for the Wii being 100% accurate, show me an article stating that because I don't recall Nintendo ever promising perfect motion controls.

And I don't get the whole "lied about having games each update." What's that supposed to mean?

How about the specs of the system? Unless i'm missing something still they haven't oficially released the specifications of the system yet. Everything so far has been nothing but rumors, and about the Wii u been as powerful as the Xbox 360.

@furrynic I honestly don't care about the specs that much. I just care if it has good games and hopefully some 3rd party support this time around. One good thing about the Wii was that it's library was at least free of the "let's be like CoD" parade of devs

@furrynic Nintendo never releases specs about their products. You'll have to wait a week or two after the release to have someone open and reverse engineer the console to estimate the specs. Nintendo policy is that they are selling entertainment and thus technical specs are not very relevant. I kind of agree with them.

Well 99% percent of human population doesn't agree with u. Nintendo always been in the bottom when it comes to specs and power, so why not come out with the silly line, that Nintendo policy is that they are selling entertainment and thus technical specs are not very relevant. If the had built a machine just as or more powerful than Sony or Microsoft, we can all be sure that they whould have been flashing specs left and right.

Well i was just making point, if u don't care if people agree with u or not, then that's u problem. the defrence between Gamecube & PS2 were very small. The games still look better in ps2 than they did in Gamecube Also don't forget that the xbox came out shortly after gamecube and took over the tittle of more powerful, and that was the last time nintendo had any sort of advantage of power over anything. Wish is also the main reason 3rd party Companys don't do A+ tittles to nintendo console and usually alsways skip nintendo. Maybe u should care if u hoping to play this 3rd party A+ titles in a nintendo console.

@furrynic I couldn't care less if people agree with me or not. However, I have to remind you the N64 was the most advanced console of its generation, whereas the Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2. I heard the SNES was also more powerful than its closest competitor but I am not so sure about this last one.

This way they can sell outdated hardware at a higher price.

The only real differentiating feature between consoles of different competitors and generations is hardware.

@CommodoreRaslin I brought a Wii because I couldn't do motion controls in my PC neither play Nintendo games. Eventually I brought a PS3 because I wanted to play some exclusives to that console and play blu-ray disks, which, at that time, was impossible in my PC. Also, I like the fact consoles allow me to play offline multiplayer games with my friends, another feature lacking in near all PC games. Likewise, I can believe someone want a XBox 360 to play Kinect, or because the enjoy the Live experience.

Different experiences are what differentiate consoles from different generations and competitors. Hardware is a component to that differentiation but not really the only or even the most important one.

@CommodoreRaslin So it was the specs that separated the Wii from the competitors, and not the motion controls? And it's the specs of the Wii U, not the Gamepad? Before the DS and Wii, I would mostly agree with you, but not anymore.

Home consoles ALWAYS feature outdated hardware, that's why they typically sell for $400 or less while up to date computers are usually $600 and up. Plus give me one Nintendo console that was sold at a high price. All of their consoles have always sold a little higher than it cost to manufacture them so they can still profit while giving consumers a good price.

The only reason I put the Wii U on top of the PS4 and the new Xbox is because of the Bull**** no more used games on the PS4 and Xbox.

I usually buy used games to save up money, but nope...Sony and Microsoft had to kill that too.

I will crash this event, blowing through the stage in my birthday suit while wearing a Mario hat with a Master Sword strapped to my back and a Hylian shield strapped to my junk, swinging on a vine, while screaming "HEY REGGIE, I GOT A WII, AND IT'S ALL FOR U!!" before being promptly arrested and tossed in the looney bin for the 435th time this year.

2 years from now I will look back at this decision and both regret and revere it.

I don't think I've ever been less interested in a new games console this close to launch as I am with the Wii U. It's just such a massively unappealling prospect. No decent games, overpriced ports, outdated technology and controllers that are guaranteed to cost a ludicrous amount of money.

I got burned with the Wii, but not this time I think.

"Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime will present at the briefing, discussing "more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment.""

This tells me that they have something else to reveal to us so I'm excited.

As for you @maximumbarmage "no decent games" = opinion (Rayman Legends, Pikmin 3, Project P-100 all look amazing, ZombiU looks intriguing, New Super Mario Bros. U looks like it'll be loads of fun, and Assassin's Creed 3 will have only been out for like 2-3 weeks by the time the Wii U launches), "overpriced ports" which ports are overpriced? When did you find out the prices of the games? "outdated technology" funny you say that when the specs of the system aren't even out yet. Just because what you see looks similar to the PS3 and 360, the games right now push the power of the 360 and PS3 while the Wii U handles it easily and has been confirmed to be able to run next generation games. As for the controller, unless you're a genius and break it, you only need one until games that start utilizing 2 come out (which probably won't happen until next year or 2014).

It would take "here's 5 free full retail games!" for me to even remotely care about the Wii U. Nintendo's online structure has always sucked, so unless they improve it this will still be a B-system like the Wii. 75% of my play time is spent offline, but when I do feel like going online it's nice when it's good.

The Wii U reminds me of that Simpsons episode, where they move away and Bart is put in the "leg-up program." He says: "Let me get this straight: we're behind the rest of our class and we're going to catch up to them by going slower than they are?" This will be a very apt statement once the PS4 and Xbox 720 are announced. They won't even need to be on the shelf to make the Wii U appear outdated.

Who knows, I could be totally wrong and it will rock, but I think Nintendo had a one-trick pony with the Wii, and its core audience are now too in love with their iPhone and Android games to care about that stuff a second time. The CoD and Madden crowds will stick to Sony or MS.

@TheCyborgNinja

The 3DS has great online (but you wouldn't know that) so it's obvious that the Wii U's online will be just as great if not better since it's a home console.

Also take a gander at the 6th generation. The PS2 came out way before the XBox and GameCube and although those two systems blew the PS2 out of the water in terms of power and graphics, the PS2 still dominated because it established a massive user base that 3rd parties would be stupid to suddenly ignore just because shiny new consoles appeared. Not saying the Wii U will emulate that same success but that's how the 8th generation is looking to be, with the speculation that the next PS/XBox not making a huge leap forward, all 3 systems most likely will be similar in power, and the Wii U having at least a full year to sell as many systems as it can before Microsoft releases their next console. And if say 15m Wii U's are sold by the time the other two bring in their new consoles, there's no way the Wii U could fail because 3rd parties will stick with it even if the games might not look as good as the other consoles', but the GamePad functionality will always be there.

@TheCyborgNinja Yawn....people said the same BS about the 3DS. I remember clearly, "Everyone just uses and iPhone now!" "Nobody cares about Mario anymore" 19 million units sold later and 6.5 million units of Super Mario 3d Land and Mario Kart 7 and it is still thriving. People also said the Vita would crush the 3DS like you are saying the PS4 will crush the Wii-U because you think it is all about power. Now the Vita is littering store shelves and Sony is wondering what the hell happened. It isn't all about power. It is about games, fair price, and you are crabbing about an online structure you know zero about. "Core" gamers limit their gaming experience more than anyone I know and the make predictions about the videogame market through their own lame filters and that is why they are always wrong. If Publishers listened to them most developers would be out of business by now.

Why do I get this horrible feeling that this is gonna be like the Sega Saturn where they are gonna say, "We're actually releasing this as soon as this conference is overLOL." I just hope that they are gonna answer some questions that should have already been answered all the way back at E3. I also hope that them wanting to get rid of Nintendo Power is their lowest point; I REALLY don't want them to be another Capcom. -_-

Actually Micro$oft already did that with the 360 slim when it was announced at E3 a few years back. Right after they talked about it they said it was released and even gave everyone in the crowd one for free. Would be awesome though if Nintendo did the same with releasing it into stores right after the conference.
