Sony Won't Allow In-Development Ark: Survival Evolved on PS4, Dev Says

"We would like nothing more than to make Ark available on PS4 as soon as possible."

Sony will not allow an in-development version of dinosaur survival game Ark: Survival Evolved on PlayStation 4, according to developer Studio Wildcard. In a forum post today, the developer said fans who want to play as soon as possible should reach out to Sony.

"As for the PS4 Release of Ark: Survival Evolved, it is currently up to Sony," Studio Wildcard explained. "We've been informed that we can't release the game on this platform until it has been finished.

"We would like nothing more than to make Ark available on PS4 as soon as possible, as we already have an awesome PS4 version of the game running internally. If you would like to see it sooner, please let Sony know, as it's unfortunately not our decision."

Survival Evolved is available on PC through Steam Early Access and on Xbox One through Game Preview. The PS4 does not have a program along the lines of Early Access, which may explain why Sony reportedly won't allow the in-progress version of Survival Evolved on the PS4.

GameSpot has reached out to Sony in an attempt to get its side of the story.

In other news about Survival Evolved, Studio Wildcard recently announced that it was removing the free-to-play Survival of the Fittest version on PC. As for PS4 and Xbox One versions, these are on hold indefinitely.

Survival Evolved launched in June 2015 for PC and came to Xbox One later. Despite not even being finished yet, the game has sold 5.5 million copies across both platforms.

Warframe was (and still is?) in Beta when it launched on the PS4. Ark has at least as much going on for it as Warframe did when it came to PS4.

Am I hearing this right? You guys want Sony to sell a game that isn't even finished yet and still in beta stages? So you all can complain when it ends up like day z and never gets finished. If you want this game so much by an Xbox or pc. Xbox is 200 dollars right now lol. Broke ass bitches

@BankAMG: Exactly. And even then the game is pretty dead on pc because of super clans that run off most players. So why would Sony want to waste one penny on a dying game.

Man you Sony fanboys crack me up, defending Sony taking your ability to make your own choice away from you saying you only want finished games, and praising Sony's high standards.

This is the same company that pushed SFV and Driveclub! Both those games were unfinished and Driveclub was supposed to be free for Day 1 buyers and they never made good on that promise.

I'm fine with unfinished games not being released. There are plenty of those available to buy right now as it is.

I applaud Sony for this. I have the game on PC and trust me when I tell you it NEEDS a LOT of optimization. Have you guys seen how it performs on the Xbone?? Sub 720 resolution and dips as low as 20 FPS and it looks like complete crap compared to the PC version. It plays like this on the PC as well. People with 980Ti cards and above have plenty of drops into the 30s on the games highest settings.

Have a look for yourselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8efFCoxzmI

Other than optimization, the game is the most fun I've had with a survival MMOFPS since I first played Day Z four years ago.

I get why Sony has this rule in place, to prevent "Quick cash grabs" without a finished product. I mean the original NES kinda did this with their seal of approval after the indie mess from Atari that almost killed console gaming. However, when you see a product sell this well on PC and XB1, IMO it's just plain stupid not to make a special exception for 2 reasons:

1 - You're taking an "established product", and screwing your customers by not allowing them to get an early member discount. So when the game does come out, they are now forced to pay full price.

2 - You're now forcing the devs from Studio Wildcard to rush this product, and the end result may not be as good as if you would allow an early member program.

& Finally, it says right before you buy the game that "there are no guarantees, and that you are buying a beta". IMO, Sony needs to make an exception to all future 3rd party preview games if the product is already established on other major platforms such as XB1 or PC...

Guys, there actually is no justification for this. No matter how hard you try to pretend there is. The're already early access games on PS4. No this won't suddenly make the PS4 store clutter or whatever.

AND you guys are acting like you would suddenly buy it. "I don't like long updates" "I hate early access (for no reason)" There's a simple solution to this. DON'T BUY IT.

@kanekan-slaugh: Maybe it's just that specific game. Ark: Survival Evolved looks pretty strange, so maybe Sony has no idea what to do with it. Safer to wait for it to be done.

When you think "there actually is no justification for this" there probably is. If there was honestly no justification, Sony would just be making money by offering it as early access, so there must be some reason why they're choosing not to. Unless you think Sony has personal issues with the devs, then it must be something and probably the simple fact that Sony just doesn't like and/or understand it in it's current state.

@PS2fweak: It's propably a publicity stunt, Both xb and ps do it all the time. Remember when they refused to allow EA access on the PS and came out and said "Oh we just want quality for our consumers" Or something among those lines.

That's the only justification I can think of I can almost bet their reply would be something similar too. even though they've had unfinished games before. And I've played the game, there's enough content for it to be called finished and I haven't run into any bugs yet.

Well, that's unusual. Over the last two console gens, games were released with the need for patches and also had DLC sold separately.

@thespicychiken: yeah.. fucked up optimisation, runs the same regardless of settings. and the retarded trolls who spiked and trapped whole spawn points and you can't even get in the game properly. Developers don't give a damn to fix this simple issue a lot of players complain about. It's a very good game indeed.

Sony is tough and really unfair when it comes to this type of thing. They have refused my game as well and won't allow me to upload it for play or even pre-order. I have a game called "Super Action Person" which is a fully 3D free roam action game where you can become any type of superhero you want. It will feature 100s of hours of play and be compatible with PSVR. It will be priced at $49.99 too. All I need is some development team to make it. Know anyone?

Funny how people in the comments are trying to praise sony for not allowing Ark. What's their excuse for when sony promoted the hell out of that terrible 7 Days to Die port or what's happening now with Paragon? Both games are early-access, yet are on PS4.

i love all these people justifying not being given an option to buy an early access / beta game. it is incomplete sure, but it has about 6x more content then most games. right now its about 70 something GBs not including the official mods (free DLC), let alone the unofficial. like imagine if you will.....a pre order....that you can play! its weird, people being happy to have no say in something. Wildcard has a lot to do, but they have come a long way, and they have pretty awesome customer support. 1400hrs played sense release 0.0

Why do developers think they should be able to release incomplete alphas or betas on the ps4? A lot of these gsmes never complete or end up released as junk on PC and Sony doesn't want to deal with that on their console. It's not like minecraft or terraria where those gsmes were already complete and just keep getting major free updates to add to the experience.

Wow. The more I hear about no man sky the more it sounds like an early access title just like Ark. By all accounts ark is a complete title with enough content that the majority of players won't ever reach the end. More and more lately games are incomplete on release, or if you prefer, games continue to expand and grow after release. Either way NMS which Sony has exclusivised to themselves continues to talk about how this day one patch will dramatically change the game and how a lot of features people expect won't be there but may be added later on. So I guess the difference is whether Sony owns the intellectual property in question? Or maybe the difference between finished and early access is early access promises to continue to improve and add new better features while finished games get to say "if we feel like it" or more commonly talk about how in the next product they make for more of your money they'll introduce those features instead of just adding it to the current product?

@Vividnightmare: NMS is vastly different from Ark.

A day 1 patch is not the same as a product in development with no hard release date.

People will play Ark while it's in development.

People will not (or are not supposed to) play NMS prior to release without the patch.

Honestly, if these devs would do anything on time, Sony would probably have let it on. They have been promising things for months, not finishing things, the game is as optimized as it was when it first came out and has had 100s of GBs worth of updates... They are not close to release... They better not be, anyway... Sony probably didn't want a 15 FPS beta/early access crap to be released because it would make them look bad - I completely agree with Sony on this. Sorry people that want ARK on PS4 :/

After that server wipe, things just haven't been right.
