Sony Won't Allow In-Development Ark: Survival Evolved on PS4, Dev Says

"We would like nothing more than to make Ark available on PS4 as soon as possible."

Sony will not allow an in-development version of dinosaur survival game Ark: Survival Evolved on PlayStation 4, according to developer Studio Wildcard. In a forum post today, the developer said fans who want to play as soon as possible should reach out to Sony.

"As for the PS4 Release of Ark: Survival Evolved, it is currently up to Sony," Studio Wildcard explained. "We've been informed that we can't release the game on this platform until it has been finished.

"We would like nothing more than to make Ark available on PS4 as soon as possible, as we already have an awesome PS4 version of the game running internally. If you would like to see it sooner, please let Sony know, as it's unfortunately not our decision."

Survival Evolved is available on PC through Steam Early Access and on Xbox One through Game Preview. The PS4 does not have a program along the lines of Early Access, which may explain why Sony reportedly won't allow the in-progress version of Survival Evolved on the PS4.

GameSpot has reached out to Sony in an attempt to get its side of the story.

In other news about Survival Evolved, Studio Wildcard recently announced that it was removing the free-to-play Survival of the Fittest version on PC. As for PS4 and Xbox One versions, these are on hold indefinitely.

Survival Evolved launched in June 2015 for PC and came to Xbox One later. Despite not even being finished yet, the game has sold 5.5 million copies across both platforms.

Ark is one of the more high profile "alpha" games, plus it is on xbox, so nice PR by Sony saying they have stricter game standards and won't allow it on the console like xbox did.

@dlCHIEF58: I'm saying it is Sony PR, nothing more. Take a title/strategy adopted by MS and say "we're better than that" despite doing similar things on their own console.

This just occurred to me that I thought I should throw out there. Sony won't allow people to pay for an unfinished game on their system, yet they had no problem lying to everyone about Shenmue 3's kickstarter situation only for it to be revealed that they've been funding the project the whole time?!? Seriously Sony?

@jerjef: You are totally misinformed. Sony is only providing funds for the PS4 port and marketing. The entire game development is funded by Shibuya and kickstarter. But keep on spewing nonsense

@ipm31: So it's fine for a company to accept money from people on the basis of making a PS4 game without having the intentions of actually releasing it for the PS4, but Sony giving the middle finger to this game is cool? Kind of a double standard there.

@jerjef: Lie? What lie? The dev said the Kickstarter was more of a market test and that Sony was funding the project from the stage at E3. Clearly the game would not have gotten the green light if it weren't for the successful Kickstarter, so it was necessary.

@Barighm: The announcement of Sony's funding was AFTER the kickstarter raised $2 mill. Besides, if they wanted to gauge interest, just ask people...Would you like a new Shenmue game? There, done.

Sony...you should have told Eidos that in regards to HITMAN...do the name ring a bell? Even though they're marketing it as "episodic," that's just slang for piece-by-piece which technically makes it unfinished or incomplete.

The hypocrisy knows no bounds...

@louixiii: it's not at all hypocritical, ark isn't a finished product, it never will be. Hitman was. Being released in episodes isn't the same as releasing an unfinished product that never will be finished.

I'm pretty sure Devs have to pay for each update they pull out to the console.

Sorry but someone must be talking BS, there is Early Access games and even in alpha or beta stage in PlayStation, Paragon is an example, Child's of Tomorrow was another one....

I play Ark in pc and what I can say it's that the devs keep the game updated day by day, even sometimes more than one update by day, every night there's an update.

And I can also understand that that amount of updates if not an easy task to pull to a console since have to be tested, approved and the devs have to pay to pull it out which I see is the real reason why outs not coming soon to PS4.

@alaannn: But what about games like Destiny that gets update after update? How do you know Ark isn't 4x the size of Destiny? At what point is a game finished nowadays? Every game this gen has needed some sort of patch or day one update.

@skiggy34: games like destiny should be banned aswell it had alot of content cut,at what point is a game finished is the problem games dont seem complete anymore microtransactions/cut content etc the console manufactures should protect there consoles/brands,as for ark it does seem to be a good game and it seems complete from what ive seen, read except for frame rate

@alaannn: The one point a lot of people are missing here is that the dev is open about its in-development status and buying it goes towards the development as opposed to unfinished games masquerading around as finished products.

There shouldn't be any unfinished games released by anyone, including day one patches. It's already band enough without racing to the bottom like this.

@inebriantia: Actually nevermnd, I get it, I was just reading how the game is not optimized very well, even on high end PC's and apparently on Xbox One it's plagued with 10-15fps drops constantly. Warframe at least runs very well.

@Berserk8989: you get to play the game early, provide feedback to developers to make the game better, and it costs about half what it will cost upon release. I'm not seeing where this is a bad thing.

@Dcyple3000: you pay to play the game early. I haven't given any feedback, but there is the option. I've put over 100 hours into an unfinished game and i only paid half price. Now, every few weeks the game gets better and better. The game is really fun, so i deal with the bad frame rate and occasional bugs, because they get better with every update. Go ahead and wait for the game and pay double the price if you can't handle bad frame rates

Torn in this topic. On one hand it would be cool to play a game in progress. On the other, I'd hate to set the precedence that now anyone can just release in-progress games and we never get a finished product.

I know that somewhat exists now with DLC and patches, but this is yet another step down from that.

@Sindred: Well the difference here is that this dev is up front about what you're getting into as opposed to companies who knowingly released buggy unfinished games as finished products. I fully support this model just because it's your choice to support it as opposed to finding out after that a game is a buggy mess or riddled with overpriced season passes (Cough Bethesda)

Never thought I'd say this, but...good for Sony.

Early access is getting a bit out of hand, with many things not being completed; it's good in certain amount, but someone needs to put their foot down and say "No, give us a finished game". If they want the Sony crowd bad enough, maybe they would be motivated to actually finish their game.

I mean, if no one expects or asks for a finished game, then we are going to stop getting polished, stable builds.

I love this, Sony won't allow this, yet they give the thumbs up to Capcom to release an early beta of Street Fighter 5 on a retail disc. The devs of this game aren't even trying to hide the fact that this is early access. I guess since Sony funded SFV they had more then enough motivation to rush the game out to try and make a name for themselves at places like EVO. Im glad it backfired on them and they've probably lost millions.

@BlackDiamond81 Oh im very familiar with the process. Learn from their mistakes? Capcom clearly learned nothing after what they got caught trying to pull with Street Fighter X Tekken. At least even without the on disc content locked behind a paywall they lied about, the game still felt complete. Street Fighter 5 took things a massive leap back. Sure it doesn't have on disc content locked behind a pay wall, but that is because none of the content was ready. To add insult to injury, their taking a new approach to the whole pay wall thing. They purposely make the majority of the content so tedious to get that they want you to break down and buy their season pass. Then there's the content that you can't even access without shelling out some real cash to buy.

As for me being upset about this, I sure am. Street Fighter is one of my favorite game series ever. I've been a huge fan of it since SF2 hit arcades in the early 90s. Ultra SF4 was the height of the series and 5 had a lot to live up to. I would have let it pass if the game wasn't in the mess it is. It just seems the more they try and fix it, the less appealing it is. The cinimatic story mode comes to mind. Sure its interesting seeing the story unfold. But after awhile it starts to fall apart. The fighting itself in it seems to be more of an afterthought. Single round matches with some of the worst AI i've ever seen. They haven't even fixed the rage quitting in ranked matches. In every other fighter I can think of, if you quit a ranked match, you get the loss and the other person gets the win. In SFV, you lose league points. Even then you need to have an extremely high disconnect rate. So if you want to quit half the time, its ok and you won't get penalized at all.

Sony is just as much to blame as Capcom. They not only funded it (either partially, or fully im not sure) to keep it exclusive, but they gave the final greenlight for it to get released on their system. Then there's the part most people are in full denial about but is painfully obvious. Nearly all big name gaming media gave the game high scores and completely downplayed the games countless flaws. Sony has a track record of pressuring companies to give stuff higher review scores. They've been caught doing it in their movies division, and their games division. Gamespot itself was in the middle of this when they fired Jeff Gertsmann years back. The story got major attention and most people thought it was only because of his Kane and Lynch review. If you look further into it and read some of his interviews you'll see it went much further back then that and he talked about how Sony was unhappy with him only giving one of the Ratchet and Clank games a 7.5. The big media outlets need preview/review copies, and advertisement to keep running. So if a big name publisher cuts off those things, they lose a lot of money.

So yeah, im very familiar with the whole process and know this goes way beyond simple mistakes. Sony and Capcom needed this game out before EVO to try and make it relevant. Sure it did well there, but they should have realized the people involved in that are a very small minority and not nearly enough to support a big name title like this. Now the big middle finger they gave the majority has come back to bite them.

@Dcyple3000 Street Fighter 5 was working yes, but far from complete. It had next to no content in it and was busted in nearly every way. It was an early beta. Now it still in beta but has more content. Its still trash:
